Book excerpt: Surveying the artistic and cultural scene in the era of Trump In a world where truth is cast in doubt and shame has gone missing, what are artists and critics on the left to do? How to demystify a political order that laughs away its own contradictions? How to mock leaders who thrive on the absurd? And why, in any event, offer more outrage to a media economy that feeds on the same? Such questions are grist to the mill of Hal Foster, who, in What Comes after Farce?, delves into recent developments in art, criticism, and fiction under the current regime of war, surveillance, extreme inequality, and media disruption. Concerned first with the cultural politics of emergency since 9/11, including the use and abuse of trauma, conspiracy, and kitsch, he moves on to consider the neoliberal makeover of aesthetic forms and art institutions during the same period. A final section surveys signal transformations in art, film, and writing. Among the phenomena explored are machine vision (images produced by machines for other machines without a human interface), operational images (images that do not represent the world so much as intervene in it), and the algorithmic scripting of information that pervades our everyday lives. If all this sounds dire, it is. In many respects we look out on a world that has moved, not only politically but also technologically, beyond our control. Yet Foster also sees possibility in the current debacle: the possibility to pressure the cracks in this order, to turn emergency into change.

She lost her best friend, Charlie, in a tragic accident, and in the painful aftermath, she has gone mute. Her two younger sisters, however, are excited about moving, especially after their dad promises that the family will get a rescue puppy. This doesn't change Thea's mind, though, until Jack-Jack bounds into her life and makes it clear that he is no ordinary dog. As she bonds with Jack-Jack, and as the dog's mischievous ways steer her toward someone she can confide in, Thea opens up to the possibility of new friendships and forgiveness, and comes to believe in what cannot be fully explained.

Book What Comes after Entanglement

Download or read book What Comes after Entanglement written by Eva Haifa Giraud and published by Duke University Press Books. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By foregrounding the ways that human existence is bound together with the lives of other entities, contemporary cultural theorists have sought to move beyond an anthropocentric worldview. Yet as Eva Haifa Giraud contends in What Comes after Entanglement?, for all their conceptual power in implicating humans in ecologically damaging practices, these theories can undermine scope for political action. Drawing inspiration from activist projects between the 1980s and the present that range from anticapitalist media experiments and vegan food activism to social media campaigns against animal research, Giraud explores possibilities for action while fleshing out the tensions between theory and practice. Rather than an activist ethics based solely on relationality and entanglement, Giraud calls for what she describes as an ethics of exclusion, which would attend to the entities, practices, and ways of being that are foreclosed when other entangled realities are realized. Such an ethics of exclusion emphasizes foreclosures in the context of human entanglement in order to foster the conditions for people to create meaningful political change.

Book What Comes After Money

Download or read book What Comes After Money written by Daniel Pinchbeck and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people believe that money is organic and inevitable; we forget that money is just a tool created to perform certain functions. But just as computer programmers drop out-of date tools and pick up better ones as soon as they become available, we might switch from bank-financed currency to a more equitable method for transferring goods and services. As an operating system for society, money needs a major upgrade. What Comes After Money? offers a wealth of alternatives to the current monetary system. In this anthology of essays drawn from the popular web magazine Reality Sandwich, 20 visionary thinkers explore the roots of the modern economic crisis and propose diverse solutions: instituting local currencies; creating reputation or gift economies (based on historical and contemporary); introducing spirituality into the equation; and many more. Contributors include economist Bernard Leitaer, media theorist Douglas Rushkoff, musician Paul D. Miller (a.k.a. DJ Spooky), theoretical physicist Amit Goswami, Larry Harvey (founder of Burning Man), and Peter Lamborn Wilson (a.k.a. Hakim Bey). Download or read book Next written by Park Linscomb and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know everyone dies, but then what? Our world can offer plenty of theories and opinions about the afterlife: reincarnation, oblivion, judgment, purgatory, Heaven, Nirvana, and Hell, to list only the well known ones. But what's true and what's not? Can we afford to be surprised? Do we really want to be surprised, especially when there is reliable information about it? The Bible calls God's promises about the afterlife "hope", but Christian hope is more than just a happy wish. It is a confident expectation; and it's basic to Christian motivation, obedience, and perseverance. But the specifics of this hope often get muddled in the midst of a modern jumble of religious ideas. "Next?" is a careful study of the wonderful Christian hope found in the Bible. It was written to be read and understood by a wide audience as it deals honestly and kindly with even sensitive subjects.Park Linscomb has been a minister of the church of Christ for over 40 years in the mission field of New England. He holds a BA in Bible from Lubbock Christian University and a MSHS in Counseling and Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University. Beyond Bible study and ministry, he has active sid-interests in Biblical archaeology, psychology, technology, and family. He is married (Linda) and has a son (Adam), daughter-in-law (Meri) and two wonderful grandsons (Jackson and Jordan).

Book What Comes Next

Download or read book What Comes Next written by James P. Pinkerton and published by Hyperion Books. This book was released on 1995-10-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our current government is failing us - the poor most dramatically. Global market forces of information and capital are destroying the old top-down politics. If present trends are allowed to continue, America will stumble into a grim Cyber Future of community breakdown and spiraling inequality - a real-life nightmare reminiscent of the fiction of William Gibson. But James Pinkerton offers hope that we can yet create a prosperous, tolerant, and compassionate society for the next century. Radically streamlined government must be part of the answer, but such transformation must be balanced by a new paradigm of choice, empowerment, inclusiveness, and decentralization that leads to a new spirit of communitarian healing at the grassroots. Pinkerton brings his practical experience in electoral politics to a sharp yet constructive critique of both parties. He warns the rampaging Republicans against culture-war jihads, but he counsels Democrats that they are doomed if they can't break their Faustian bargain with bureaucracy. And if both parties fail, he adds, some new third-party political configuration is inevitable. On the eve of the 1996 elections, no book could be more timely than What Comes Next.

Caught in a downward spiral, Sid drops her college prep classes and takes up residence in the A/V room with only Corey "The Living Stoner" Livingston for company. But as she gets to know Corey--slacker, baker, total dreamboat--Sid finds someone who truly makes her happy. Now, if only she could shake the nightmares, everything would be perfect...
