Book Information Systems and the Environment

Download or read book Information Systems and the Environment written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-09-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information technology is a powerful tool for meeting environmental objectives and promoting sustainable development. This collection of papers by leaders in industry, government, and academia explores how information technology can improve environmental performance by individual firms, collaborations among firms, and collaborations among firms, government agencies, and academia. Information systems can also be used by nonprofit organizations and the government to inform the public about broad environmental issues and environmental conditions in their neighborhoods. Several papers address the challenges to information management posed by the explosive increase in information and knowledge about environmental issues and potential solutions, including determining what information is environmentally relevant and how it can be used in decision making. In addition, case studies are described and show how industry is using information systems to ensure sustainable development and meet environmental standards. The book also includes examples from the public sector showing how governments use information knowledge systems to disseminate "best practices" beyond big firms to small businesses, and from the world of the Internet showing how knowledge is shared among environmental advocates and the general public.

Book Renewing U S Telecommunications Research

Download or read book Renewing U S Telecommunications Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern telecommunications infrastructureâ€"made possible by research performed over the last several decadesâ€"is an essential element of the U.S. economy. The U.S. position as a leader in telecommunications technology, however, is at risk because of the recent decline in domestic support of long-term, fundamental telecommunications research. To help understand this challenge, the National Science Foundation asked the NRC to assess the state of telecommunications research in the United States and recommend ways to halt the research decline. This report provides an examination of telecommunications research support levels, focus, and time horizon in industry, an assessment of university telecommunications research, and the implications of these findings on the health of the sector. Finally, it presents recommendations for enhancing U.S. telecommunications' research efforts.

Book A Conceptual Framework to Address Barriers to Knowledge Management in Project Based Organizations

Download or read book A Conceptual Framework to Address Barriers to Knowledge Management in Project Based Organizations written by Peyman Akhavan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify, classify, and prioritize knowledge management (KM) barriers in Iran project-based organization (PBO) and present conceptual framework for improving it. Design/methodology/approach: After studying previous literature on the topic, initial barriers of knowledge management in project based organizations were extracted. Then, a list of barriers of knowledge management in the above mentioned organizations was finalized by interviewing experts in knowledge management. After that, the barriers were prioritized using a questionnaire. Finally, a conceptual framework for improving knowledge management barriers was presented. Findings: In this article, barriers of knowledge management in project based organizations have been divided into five categories: individual, organizational, technological, contextual, and inter-project. Then a three-layered conceptual framework was presented for improving the barriers of knowledge management in project-based organizations. Practical implications: The prepared and prioritized list of barriers of knowledge management in project based organizations is a stepping stone and a guideline to managers in project based organizations in order to be able to identify barriers of knowledge management in their own organizations and resolve them, and improve knowledge management in their organizations. It also serves as a useful base for researchers to expand further research in barriers of knowledge management in project based organizations. Originality/value: This article is probably the first article which has identified barriers of knowledge management through interview and questionnaires carried out in 50 active project based organizations which had knowledge management section. The article also presented a three-layered framework for improving barriers of knowledge management, which can be applied step by step considering the level of importance.

Book Know how Signalling and Transfer Systems to Support Integrated Supply Chains

Download or read book Know how Signalling and Transfer Systems to Support Integrated Supply Chains written by Zhitao Liu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction industry is the largest industry in the world and operates in knowledge-based project organisations. The success of projects relies on the management of both tacit and explicit knowledge. This situation calls for a method for disseminating tacit knowledge from individuals to achieve higher performance and success value in construction projects. For the purpose, this study first articulates the problems of knowledge management in the construction industry. Then, by reviewing some knowledge engineering and management literatures, this research sets a theoretical foundation of knowledge management in the construction industry. A questionnaire survey was used to investigate and examine the current situation of knowledge management in UK and China construction industry. The result of frequency analysis and nonparametric test analysis provides the perceptions on the importance of knowledge transfer, the implementation of knowledge transfer, the resources of knowledge, and barriers for tacit knowledge transfer. From the literature review, this study proposes a tacit knowledge transfer process framework (3I) and identifies a series of factors correlated with effectiveness of knowledge transfer. This thesis also identifies four main independent variables - organsiational culture, organizational structure, IT technology and No-IT technology, and investigates the relationship between organisational elements with these factors and the performance of knowledge transfer. The findings are based on three case studies and responses of questionnaire survey and interviews. The results reveal that there are significant relationships between some of the variables and either the creation of knowledge assets or performance of knowledge transfer. Therefore, it is necessary for construction organsiations to consider these elements in developing and implementing a knowledge management strategy/system in a construction organisation. This study proposes a practical methodology to transfer knowledge by using an integrated system (TKTMS). The TKTMS can be an effective tool for all project members to transfer tacit knowledge across firms' boundaries and accelerate the speed of knowledge creation, share and transfer in the construction industry. The integration of the function model (IDEF0) with the information model (IDEF1) is applied to understand the necessary function/information for consideration in the 3I model and implement TKTMS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has already been written on Knowledge Management at a fairly theoretical level. This resource focuses, for the first time, on how to:- communicate the ideas behind Knowledge Management;- conduct a feasibility study within your organization;- prepare a plan for implementing Knowledge Management;- engage and involve everyone in the process;- start work on the changes to your processes, infrastructure and procedures that will help you build and use your corporate knowledge base.If you've been given the responsibility for this process, you will need answers to the 'what, where, why and how' of Knowledge Management that you can use to support your strategy and to communicate both up and down the organization. These are provided in Part I of the Toolkit.Building a successful Knowledge Management process involves changing the culture and systems within your organization, as well as people's behaviour. Part II takes you through the organizational and cultural issues you need to explore prior to developing a project plan. It also includes help on writing a business case and presents the different methods for auditing and locating knowledge within your organization. Finally, Part III contains checklists, activities and sessions that will enable you to crack some of the key issues such as the knowledge audit, the project plan, communication and training. The success of your Knowledge Management strategy at an individual, team and organizational level will depend on the ongoing involvement and commitment of everyone involved. This Toolkit doesn't offer any shortcuts in the process. However, it does offer a varied collection of facts, figures, techniques, checklists and management tools that will help you and your colleagues every step of the way.
