Book excerpt: This new book surveys Edward Weston's work more comprehensively and exhaustively than any previous work. A combination of biography and critical analysis, it offers more than 320 meticulously reproduced duotone images, nearly a quarter of which have never been reproduced in books before. The selected photographs trace Weston's career from his early days, through formative years in Mexico, and on through the balance of his career, which ended because of the onset of Parkinson's disease ten years prior to his death in 1958. Treated chronologically and emphasizing Weston's creative preoccupations in each period, the book includes work that he created in 1938 and 1939 with funds from the first two Guggenheim Foundation grants ever awarded to a photographer. To illustrate the book vintage prints have been selected from the copious Weston Archives at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, and the highly important Lane Collection at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Nearly 10,000 photographs have been examined in order to select those reproduced in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the third volume of this popular series, leading experts provide fascinating and unexpected insights into critical issues of culture, economy, politics, and society in today's China. This world, outside the reach of state control and either misunderstood or unreported in Western media, gains clarity and dimension from the fresh insights of a prominent group of activists, investigative journalists, lawyers, scholars, and travelers, who share a common interest in lessening the profound information gap between China and the rest of the world. In sixteen new essays, they address such key topics as civil society, consumerism, environmental adversity, ethnic tension, the Internet, legal reform, new media and social networking, nationalist tourism, sex and popular culture, as well the costs of urban gigantism to portray the complexity of life in contemporary China—and how, increasingly, it speaks to the everyday experience of Americans. Lewis, Benjamin L. Liebman, Jonathan S. Noble, Tim Oakes, Jessica C. Teets, Alex L. Wang, and Timothy B. Weston.

Download or read book Japanese Painting and National Identity written by Victoria Weston and published by U of M Center for Japanese Studies. This book was released on 2004 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph in English to address the art and philosophy of a group of painters regarded as seminal figures in the development of modern Japanese painting. Lead by the outspoken and widely published art critic Okakura Tenshin, a group of mostly Tokyo-based painters took on nothing less than the modernization of traditional Japanese painting. The painters who looked to Okakura Tenshin as their leader saw themselves not just as artists but as servants of the nation. Their task, they believed, was to give expression to the vitality of Meiji Japan while also helping to shape public opinion at home and abroad. Thus, they chose themes purposefully redolent with what they identified as Japanese cultural values; they experimented with painting techniques based on tradition yet revitalized through innovation. This book details how these artists came to this mission, as well as their training, their philosophical objectives, and their works.

Book excerpt: "This is the first major book to celebrate the Huntington's collection of five hundred Edward Weston photographs, all of them selected and printed for the institution by the artist in the 1940s. The Guggenheim photographs lie at the heart of this legacy, but Weston also included in his gift still-life studies from the early 1920s and 1930s, as well as later landscapes from the 1940s. Weston selected these photographs as representative of his best work, and they are reproduced here, complemented by investigations into the influences that shaped them."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
