Book The Westfield Jubilee

Download or read book The Westfield Jubilee written by William G. Bates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Westfield Jubilee: A Report of the Celebration at Whitfield, Mass;, On the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town, October 6, 1869, With the Historical Address Information of a traditionary character, also, was sought from some of the old inhabitants; and many old papers, illustrating the early history of the town, were obtained from their descendants. It was a matter of deep regret to have been informed, that valuable papers for historical. Purposes, had been destroyed, from time to time, as of no supposed importance. In the Opinion of the committee of the town, and, also, in that of very many of our citizens, a collection of facts, gathered with much labor, and at considerable expense, and collected and arranged in a methodical manner for; future reference, should be embodied in some form. Such a volume will constitute an enduring record of our early history, for which the future generations of' those, who are here to live after us, will be thankful to us. The celebration itself will be a landmark in the history of our ancient town; and, however humble may be the individuals who participated in the celebration, either as contributors to the facts, fancy, sentiment, or history, which were displayed, or who came merely as visitors from distant homes to the old hearth-stone of their race, the memorial of their names, connected with the events, which transpired upon this eventful historical day, will be a record which will be appreciated more and more highly, as advancing ages shall enhance the interest of pos terity in the history of their ancestors. We can not but have noticed an awakened interest in the people of New England, in their genealogical record. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across nineteenth-century New England, antiquarians and community leaders wrote hundreds of local histories about the founding and growth of their cities and towns. Ranging from pamphlets to multivolume treatments, these narratives shared a preoccupation with establishing the region as the cradle of an Anglo-Saxon nation and the center of a modern American culture. They also insisted, often in mournful tones, that New England’s original inhabitants, the Indians, had become extinct, even though many Indians still lived in the very towns being chronicled. InFirsting and Lasting, Jean M. O’Brien argues that local histories became a primary means by which European Americans asserted their own modernity while denying it to Indian peoples. Erasing and then memorializing Indian peoples also served a more pragmatic colonial goal: refuting Indian claims to land and rights. Drawing on more than six hundred local histories from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island written between 1820 and 1880, as well as censuses, monuments, and accounts of historical pageants and commemorations, O’Brien explores how these narratives inculcated the myth of Indian extinction, a myth that has stubbornly remained in the American consciousness. In order to convince themselves that the Indians had vanished despite their continued presence, O’Brien finds that local historians and their readers embraced notions of racial purity rooted in the century’s scientific racism and saw living Indians as “mixed” and therefore no longer truly Indian. Adaptation to modern life on the part of Indian peoples was used as further evidence of their demise. Indians did not—and have not—accepted this effacement, and O’Brien details how Indians have resisted their erasure through narratives of their own. These debates and the rich and surprising history uncovered in O’Brien’s work continue to have a profound influence on discourses about race and indigenous rights.

Book American Puritan Imagination

Download or read book American Puritan Imagination written by Sacvan Bercovitch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1974-06-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades a major revaluation has been taking place of the colonial Puritan imagination. With the growth of interest in early American literature has come increasing recognition of its quality and a better understanding of its place in the continuity of American culture. However, much of the best critical work to date has been published as articles in scholarly journals, and in bringing together for the first time the best work in this growing field the present anthology fills a number of important needs. It is at once a valuabale and accessible introduction for students, a summing-up of a new enterprise, and a guide for further studies.
