Book Moths of Western North America

Download or read book Moths of Western North America written by Jerry A. Powell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Two of North America's most prolific and respected specialists on moths--particularly those of the West--have combined over a century of experience and scholarship to introduce western moths of all families authoritatively to both the amateur and the experienced professional entomologist. This biologically oriented and beautifully illustrated treatment of a quarter of all known western moth species fills a long-needed void, and does it superbly."--Charles V. Covell Jr., author of A Field Guide to Moths of Eastern North America "This work sets a new high water mark for North American lepidopterology. Considering the authors' century of combined studies of western Lepidoptera, it is clear from the outset that no other team could have delivered a work so rich in taxonomic and life history information, much of it being original and appearing in the literature for the first time. I will read my copy more like a novel than a reference work, casting about the accounts and repeatedly flipping through the 2300 color images to better familiarize myself with our continent's rich and handsome diversity of moths. Moths of Western North America will serve as both gateway and catalyst for the study of moths for decades, and especially for microlepidopterans--for whom no like work exists in the New World."--David L. Wagner, author of Caterpillars of Eastern North America "Recent years have seen a surge of interest in moths, with growing appreciation of their amazing diversity and their great ecological importance. Information on western moths has been scattered and scarce, however, so this new volume is a tremendous step forward. Jerry Powell and Paul Opler bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience to the subject, and their Moths of Western North America is a landmark publication, instantly indispensable to anyone with a serious interest in Lepidoptera."--Kenn Kaufman, coauthor of Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies of North America

Book Monitoring Larval Populations of the Douglas fir Tussock Moth and the Western Spruce Budworm on Permanent Plots

Download or read book Monitoring Larval Populations of the Douglas fir Tussock Moth and the Western Spruce Budworm on Permanent Plots written by Robert R. Mason and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures for monitoring larval populations of the Douglas-fir tussock moth and the western spruce budworm are recommended based on many years experience in sampling these species in eastern Oregon and Washington. It is shown that statistically reliable estimates of larval density can be made for a population by sampling host trees in a series of permanent plots in a geographical monitoring unit. The most practical method is to estimate simultaneously densities on a plot of both insect species by the nondestructive sampling of foliage on lower crown branches of host trees. This can be done either by counting all larvae on sample branches or by estimating the frequency of occurrence of a selected threshold number of larvae in samples. Statistics are given on the expected within- and between-plot variances and the number of sample plots needed in different sized monitoring units. In large monitoring units, plot densities of tussock moth and budworm larvae usually are not normally distributed, but they can be normalized by logarithmic transformation to predict the probability of subpopulations of any given density occurring somewhere in the unit. It is urged that sampling methods be consistent and that monitoring be done annually to accumulate continuous databases that reflect the behavior of defoliator populations over a long period.

Book Caterpillars of Eastern North America

Download or read book Caterpillars of Eastern North America written by David L. Wagner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many caterpillars are illustrated here for the first time. Dozens of new foodplant records are presented and erroneous records are corrected. The book provides considerable information on the distribution, biology, and taxonomy of caterpillars beyond that available in other popular works on Eastern butterflies and moths. The introductory chapter covers caterpillar structure, life cycles, rearing, natural enemies, photography, and conservation. The section titled "Caterpillar Projects" will be of special interest to educators." "Given the dearth of accessible guides on the identification and natural history of caterpillars, Caterpillars of Eastern North America is a must for entomologists and museum curators, forest managers, conservation biologists and others who seek a compact, easy-to-use guide to the caterpillars of this vast region."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Historical Patterns of Western Spruce Budworm and Douglas Fir Tussock Moth Outbreaks in the Northern Blue Mountains Oregon Since A D 1700 Classic Reprint written by Thomas W. Swetnam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Patterns of Western Spruce Budworm and Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth Outbreaks in the Northern Blue Mountains, Oregon, Since A. D. 1700 The objectives of this study were to reconstruct and analyze a multicentury history of budworm and tussock moth outbreaks in old-growth mixed-conifer stands of the north ern Blue Mountains and Eagle Cap edemess in northeastern Oregon. We were par ticularly interested in assessing possible changes in outbreak dynamics in the 2oth century relative to previous centuries. Our starting point for this study was observa tions of radial growth responses to defoliation by these two insects in previous tree ring studies conducted within the region (brubaker 1978; Brubaker and Greene 1979; Vcman 1980, From this work it was evident that characteristic tree-ring pat terns (hereafter called signatures) caused by budworms and tussock moths might be detected and isolated in radial increment time series. Following this lead, we applied dendrochronological methods developed and demonstrated in the southern Rocky Mountains (swetnam and others 1985; Swetnam and Lynch 1989, 1993) to tree-ring collections from the Blue Mountains. In this paper, we describe the results of our investigations in the northern Blue Mountains; we focused primarily on the historical patterns of change in regional-scale outbreaks among all sampled stands.
