Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old West Surrey: Some Notes and Memories So many and so great have been the changes within the last half-century, that I have thought it desirable to note, while it may yet be done, what I can remember of the ways and lives and habitations of the older people of the working class of tire country I have lived in almost continuously ever since I was a very young child. It is the south-western corner of the county of Surrey; so near indeed to the actual corner, that the adjoining portions of Hampshire and Sussex come within a radius of a very few miles, and are considered as within the district. After all, geographical distinctions are purely arbitrary, and only really appreciable on the map, whore they show in different colours; whereas, in the real world, one steps without knowing it from Surrey into Hampshire on the dry heath-land, and out of Surrey into Sussex from one clay puddle into the next, without being aware in either case that the land is called by another name. The practical boundaries of our country that we commonly call West Surrey, without any reterence to parliamentary or other authorised divisions, are the long chalk line of the Hog's Back on the north, with its eastern prolongation beyond Guildford, and the Weald of Sussex to the south. Book Stories of the Great West Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of the Great West Classic Reprint written by Theodore Roosevelt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Great West As a youth Theodore Roosevelt was an enthusiastic student of Western history and pioneer types. Later, as ranchman and hunter, he grew to know intimately and to love deeply the rough, free life of the Western plains. Mr. Roosevelt's interest in history probably was inherited, but his fondness for outdoor life grew out of his grateful love for his foster mother - the green earth - who took the delicate youth in her rough, but kindly, embrace and gave him a sound body and a clear vision. It was during the quiet evenings, and the otherwise idle hours, spent at Elkhorn," his Dakota ranch, that Theodore Roosevelt penned most of the fascinating pictures of frontier and ranch life that make up this present volume. "The Backwoodsmen of the Alleghanies" and "Lewis and Clark and the Exploration of the Far West" are from The Winning of the West," permission to republish here having kindly been granted by G. P. Putnam's Sons. The other stories are from Hero Tales" and Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail." Some of these stories have been condensed from the original version for reasons of space. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clovernook, or Recollections of Our Neighborhood in the West Without a thought of making a book, I began to recall some shadows and sunbeams that fell about me as I came up to womanhood, incidents for the most part of so little apparent moment or significance that they who live in what is called the world would scarcely have marked them had they been detained with me while they were passing, and before I was aware, the record of my memories grew to all I now have printed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heart of the West At Dry Lake, where their routes diverged, they reined up for a parting cigarette. For miles they had ridden in silence save for the soft drum of the ponies' hoofs on the matted mesquite grass, and the rattle of the Chapar ral against their wooden stirrups. But in Texas dis course is seldom continuous. You may fill in a mile, a meal, and a murder between your paragraphs without detriment to your thesis. So, without apology, Webb offered an addendum to the conversation that had begun ten miles away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oneonta Memories and Sundry Personal Recollections of the Author The early settlers little thought they were forming the nucleus of a town which, within one hundred years, would maintain a population greater in extent than could be found at any other given point, within a section of the Empire State, extending from Kings ton, oh the east, to Cortland, on the west; from Amsterdam on the north, to Binghamton on the south. Oneonta village is Situated upon ground more or less hilly and The Plains a few miles west thereof has often been looked upon as a more natural place for a large town. In a purely physical sense, applied locally, this may be correct, but in considering the respective merits of the two points, in their relation ship to the general topography of the country sur rounding, a person of good judgment, if expressing an opinion, would decidedly answer in the negative. Book Memories of William N Sherman Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memories of William N Sherman Classic Reprint written by Harris R. Greene and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of William N. Sherman Different nations have different standards of human excellence. In the view of the ancients, and, at the present time, in the view of uncivilized races, the man to be honored is the man of physical strength and power. He who has the broadest shoulders; he who stands the tallest, and can with the greatest vigor draw the bow - he is the man to be esteemed; he is the hero. Indeed, this criterion of excellence has prevailed more or less among civilized nations. We are told that "Saul was a choice young man and a goodly; and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he; from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people." It was no small recommendation to Saul in the view of his countrymen with reference to the position of power he was to occupy that he was head and shoulders taller than any other man. Among nations representing a higher type of civilization and refinement, the standard of excellence becomes one of mental power, intellectual genius. Such, in the main, is the standard in all civilized and enlightened countries to-day. The great man in Europe to-day is the man who is great in the military, the scientific, the literary, or the aesthetic world. For myself, I can claim for them only an unusual degree of that unlite erary and unpopular quality called truthfulness.
