Download or read book West of Bathurst written by Kari Maaren and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this complete collection of the webcomic West of Bathurst, which ran between 2006 and 2014, Marie Dumont, a graduate student newly arrived in Toronto, takes up residence at U of T's Davies College and finds herself sucked into a strange world in which robes are expected, socialising is mandatory, and everybody puts way too much effort into the annual Murder Game. Struggling to pay at least some attention to her studies as she juggles old ghosts and new friendships, Marie stumbles through a world that is almost ordinary, except perhaps when mythological beings wander the streets of Toronto or objects burst spontaneously into flame. She is accompanied by cynical Rahim, dotty Sherlock Holmes-wannabe Barbara, and devious Casey, who is quite possibly Satan. In the process, Marie tries as hard as any twenty-something graduate student never to grow up. She also consumes a fair number of maple doughnuts, but that's only to be expected.

Download or read book Gudyarra written by Stephen Gapps and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In May 1824, what can only be described as a period of all-out, total gudyarra ('war' in the Wiradyuri language) had begun west of the Blue Mountains. Relations between Wiradyuri people and the colonists in the country around Bathurst had completely broken down, and the number of raids and killings occurring across isolated stock stations in the district had intensified.' In Gudyarra, Stephen Gapps - award-winning author of The Sydney Wars - unearths what led to this furious and bloody war, beginning with the occupation of Wiradyuri lands by Europeans following Governor Macquarie's push to expand the colony west over the Blue Mountains to generate wealth from sheep and cattle. Gudyarra traces the co-ordinated resistance warfare by the Wiradyuri under the leadership of Windradyne, and others such as Blucher and Jingler, that occurred in a vast area across the central west of New South Wales. Detailing the drastic counterattacks by the colonists and the punitive expeditions led by armed parties of colonists and convicts that often ended in massacres of Wiradyuri women and children, Gapps provides an important new historical account of the fierce Wiradyuri resistance. 'This isn't just a war for Wiradjuri country, this is a war for Australia: the country we are still to be. Our nation begins here.' -- Stan Grant 'The untold story of the Wiradyuri War of resistance against a World Empire' -- Uncle Bill Allen Junior, Wiradyuri Elder 'In Gudyarra, Stephen Gapps plots in meticulous detail the brutal war between the British and the Wiradyuri for possession of the Western Plains of New South Wales. A masterly account of both sides of the conflict, Gudyarra offers new understandings of the complexity of frontier history and the need for all Australians to reconcile with the past.' -- Lyndall Ryan 'This is an important book, indeed essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the new direction in the history of the frontier wars.' -- Henry Reynolds
Download or read book UTOpia written by Jason McBride and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the election of Mayor David Miller in November 2003, Toronto has experienced a wave of civic pride and enthusiasm not felt in decades. At long last, Torontonians see their city as a place of possibility and potential. Visions of a truly workable, liveable and world-class city are once again dancing in citizens' heads. In the past two years, this spirit has, directly or indirectly, manifested itself in multifarious forms: in writer Sheila Heti's sui generis lecture series, Trampoline Hall; in the transformation of derelict hotels such as the Drake and the Gladstone into cultural hotspots; in renewed interest in waterfront revitalization and public transportation; in exciting, controversial architectural developments such as the OCAD building, the expansion of the ROM and the AGO; in the [murmur] project, which catalogues stories about Toronto neighbourhoods and broadcasts them to people's cell phones; in the explosion of the local independent music scene. uTOpia aims to capture and chronicle that spirit, collecting writing by many of the people inspired by and involved in these projects. Featuring passionate, visionary essays by thirty-four different journalists, artists, thinkers, architects and activists, uTOpia is a compendium of ideas, opinions and strategies. The anthology explores plans to redevelop the Island airport into a Ward's Island-style community; how the Zeidler family is energizing artist-run centres; what a car-free Kensington Market might mean; the necessity and beauty of laneway housing; the way past efforts to combat devastating developments like the Spadina Expressway have shaped current activism; what a utopian Toronto might look like mapped out; and much, much more. Playful, erudite and accessible, uTOpia writes Toronto as it is shared and created by the people who live here. Though it is by no means a complete picture of what is happening in the city right now, it will hopefully show that what was once just a T-shirt slogan - I Heart T.O. - is now genuine, heartfelt sentiment. Contributors include Howard Akler, Andrew Alfred-Duggan, Jacob Allderdice, Bert Archer, James Bow, Nicole Cohen, Jonny Dovercourt, Dale Duncan, Philip Evans, Mark Fram, Misha Glouberman, Chris Hardwicke, Sheila Heti, Alfred Holden, Luis Jacob, Lorraine Johnson, Edward Keenan, Mark Kingwell, John Lorinc, Sally McKay, Heather McLean, Dave Meslin, Shawn Micallef, Derek Murr, Ninjalicious, Darren O'Donnell, Planning Action, Barbara Rahder, Dylan Reid, Erik Rutherford, Jeffrey Stinson, Deanne Taylor, Conan Tobias, Stéphanie Verge, Adam Vaughan and Marlena Zuber.

Book excerpt: The Toronto Dressmakers' Strike of 1931 brings young sisters Sophie and Rose together in their fight for better working conditions, decent wages, and for their union. It's a tough battle as distrust and resentment of immigrants is growing, with many people blaming their poverty and difficulties on these workers. Sophie and Rose are faced with unexpected Ñ and sometimes violent Ñ barriers, and they quickly find that a strike is more than just a march. Barely into the strike, Rose is imprisoned after a fight in a picket line, leaving fourteen-year-old Sophie to take care of their ailing mother at night and spend her days protesting in the freezing wind. Rose's isolation in prison weakens her resolve for change. Will they be able to continue the fight for what they once so strongly believed in? In the midst of anti-Semitism and the Great Depression, Sophie, Rose, and their union come together to try to make a lasting change.
