Book Jobs Health and the Meaning of Work

Download or read book Jobs Health and the Meaning of Work written by Mary Davis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-of-its-kind analysis using public health and economics research to illuminate how jobs affect our well-being. As the saying goes, “find a job you that you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Could it really be so simple? According to Mary Davis’s innovative Jobs, Health, and the Meaning of Work, of course not. Davis explores the science of jobs from the vantage point of both public health and economics; in doing so, she untangles the complex weave of what makes people happy, healthy, and fulfilled at work. Sharing the real-life stories of workers who thrive (or struggle) in their jobs, this book emphasizes the point that there is no single recipe for what makes work healthy and meaningful across workers. Topics covered in the book include wage and nonwage characteristics of jobs that impact worker well-being, the role of recessions, the concept of meaningful work, and job stress and burnout. It concludes by putting these stories and research within the context of the COVID labor economy and the future of work. This novel blend of economic and public health research deepens the discussion of what makes work meaningful.

Book I Have Good News and Bad News

Download or read book I Have Good News and Bad News written by Alnoor Rajan Talwar and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rajan Talwar's book is not simply an individual's journey through the trials of living with Multiple Sclerosis. It is a discourse between a thinking, reflective being with his world. It is a discourse on life, not in any abstract fashion, but in the very real essence of living each day to its fullest. His sense of humour prevails even in his darkest moments of anger and despair, as he punctuates some of the most painful moments of his life with this humour. Every chapter contains a positive lesson from a negative circumstance. The question of self growth for the author is linked to the inexorable condition of the disease that holds him captive. Boustan Hirji - Dawson College Unique, self-told story of pain, courage and triumph. A candid account of the real turbulences of life. Informative of treatments that the medical profession considers 'Witchcraft' Passionately written. Refreshingly honest, open and sensitive. The author invites us to his world of MS and takes us on an intimate tour of his fears, hopes, despair, strengths. On this tour, we encounter our own innermost being; we find reflected in his world our own world. We find the echoes of our own questions, and we question our responses to the world we all live in. He provides us with the lens through which to view his world and we find that this lens is indeed a reflection of our own world. In this sense his world of MS is indeed our world and MS is then our metaphor for the calamities of our lives. This is one man's journey of coming to terms with his reality and it can only inspire us and help us to come to terms with our own reality. A must read for every thinking, feeling, and struggling person! Zeenat Shariff Aga Khan University

Book Key Policy Challenges and Opportunities to Improve Care for People with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

Download or read book Key Policy Challenges and Opportunities to Improve Care for People with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral health and substance use disorders affect approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population. Of those with a substance use disorder, approximately 60 percent also have a mental health disorder. Together, these disorders account for a substantial burden of disability, have been associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from other chronic illnesses, and can be risk factors for incarceration, homelessness, and death by suicide. In addition, they can compromise a person's ability to seek out and afford health care and adhere to treatment recommendations. To explore data, policies, practices, and systems that affect the diagnosis and provision of care for mental health and substance use disorders, the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine created the Forum on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders. The forum activities are expected to advance the discussion and generate potential ideas on ways to address many of the most persistent problems in delivering mental health and substance use services. The inaugural workshop, held October 15-16, 2019, in Washington, DC, explored the key policy challenges that impede efforts to improve care for those individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Book Your Personality Your Health

Download or read book Your Personality Your Health written by Carol Ritberger, Ph.D. and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a connection between personality, the human energy system, chakras, and wellness? In this uniquely informative work, medical intuitive Carol Ritberger, Ph.D., explores that premise in depth and presents a compelling case for just such a connection. Ritberger explains that the human energy system is an electromagnetic energy force that is rich in biological and biographical information. It servesas a holographic image that reflects our state of well-being—spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Its light and colors tell the story of who we are, how we think, why we act the way we do, how our personalities affect our lives, and the state of our physical condition. Its subtle energy reveals the essence of our true selves, and its patterns create a mosaic of our souls. Your Personality, Your Health is unique in its subject matter and the manner in which it connects the human energy system with predictable behavioral characteristics dictated by our personalities. It offers a variety of perspectives to enable us to better understand ourselves, why we become ill, and where in our physical bodies we are most susceptible to creating illness. As you read this fascinating book, you will be encouraged in your efforts to change the thoughts, emotions, and habits that may be holding you back; to accept yourself for who you are; to embrace the innate creativity and wisdom you hold inside; and to learn to love the uniqueness you bring to this world. This work offers you the opportunity to discover the vast, untapped riches that lie within you and your divine essence!

Book Alcohol Tobacco and Obesity

Download or read book Alcohol Tobacco and Obesity written by Kirsten Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although drinking, smoking and obesity have attracted social and moral condemnation to varying degrees for more than two hundred years, over the past few decades they have come under intense attack from the field of public health as an 'unholy trinity' of lifestyle behaviours with apparently devastating medical, social and economic consequences. Indeed, we appear to be in the midst of an important historical moment in which policies and practices that would have been unthinkable a decade ago (e.g., outdoor smoking bans, incarcerating pregnant women for drinking alcohol, and prohibiting restaurants from serving food to fat people), have become acceptable responses to the 'risks' that alcohol, tobacco and obesity are perceived to pose. Hailing from Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the USA, and drawing on examples from all four countries, contributors interrogate the ways in which alcohol, tobacco and fat have come to be constructed as 'problems' requiring intervention and expose the social, cultural and political roots of the current public health obsession with lifestyle. No prior collection has set out to provide an in-depth examination of alcohol, tobacco and obesity through the comparative approach taken in this volume. This book therefore represents an invaluable and timely contribution to critical studies of public health, health inequities, health policy, and the sociology of risk more broadly.
