Book Kinship Networks and International Migration in Nigeria

Download or read book Kinship Networks and International Migration in Nigeria written by A.O. Olutayo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed, comprehensive and insightful account of Nigerians’ international migration trajectories, drivers, processes and dynamics. The book is inspired by the orientation and conviction that, as developing nations, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the world struggle with pathways to development, the time has come to consistently factor in international migration so as to sustainably annex the gains and mitigate loss within the framework of Migration for Development (M4D). However, before migration can drive development, emigration and return forces must be sufficiently understood, especially with regards to the interface of kinship networks which punctuate and strongly influence behavioural characteristics and social relations of Africans. The book was written with strong sociological and anthropological elements and with important academic and pragmatic development orientations. It realistically engages with recent discourses and debates in migration and diaspora studies, kinship, return migration, remittances and migration for development policies and practices. The book is of both theoretical and practical importance, establishing a useful interface among theoretical, empirical and pragmatic issues with relevance not only for the largely ‘sending’ developing nations, but also for the ‘receiving’ developed nations of Europe, America and a few emerging economies of Asia. This book will be very useful as teaching, research and policy material.

Book excerpt: “Storylines and twists abound. But action is secondary to atmosphere: Onuzo excels at evoking a stratified city, where society weddings feature ‘ice sculptures as cold as the unmarried belles’ and thugs write tidy receipts for kickbacks extorted from homeless travelers.” —The New Yorker When army officer Chike Ameobi is ordered to kill innocent civilians, he knows it is time to desert his post. As he travels toward Lagos with Yemi, his junior officer, and into the heart of a political scandal involving Nigeria’s education minister, Chike becomes the leader of a new platoon, a band of runaways who share his desire for a different kind of life. Among them is Fineboy, a fighter with a rebel group, desperate to pursue his dream of becoming a radio DJ; Isoken, a 16–year–old girl whose father is thought to have been killed by rebels; and the beautiful Oma, escaping a wealthy, abusive husband. Full of humor and heart, Welcome to Lagos is a high–spirited novel about aspirations and escape, innocence and corruption. It offers a provocative portrait of contemporary Nigeria that marks the arrival in the United States of an extraordinary young writer.

Book Invest for Good

Download or read book Invest for Good written by Mark Mobius and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investors are placing increased emphasis on capital allocation methods to achieve their desired social, environmental and financial objectives, and are targeting investments that not only facilitate economic growth in countries around the world but also do good in terms of aiding human development - from cleaner environments to safer products and better employment practices. At the same time, there is considerable evidence that if companies adhere to ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) standards, they will outperform companies who do not. But how do individuals - rather than institutional investors - invest using ESG criteria? And just how complex are the procedures? This new book, written by investment guru Mark Mobius and his expert team, is full of entertaining and informative anecdotes from the authors' day-to-day experiences in the world of sustainable investment. Readers will gain a clearer understanding of what sustainable investment actually means, the positive effects it can have on businesses and societies, what to look for in order to identify sound and sustainable investment opportunities, and how to balance sustainable investing with good returns.

Book Looking for Transwonderland

Download or read book Looking for Transwonderland written by Noo Saro-Wiwa and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “remarkable chronicle” of a journey back to this West African nation after years of exile (The New York Times Book Review). Noo Saro-Wiwa was brought up in England, but every summer she was dragged back to visit her father in Nigeria—a country she viewed as an annoying parallel universe where she had to relinquish all her creature comforts and sense of individuality. After her father, activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, was killed there, she didn’t return for several years. Then she decided to come to terms with the country her father given his life for. Traveling from the exuberant chaos of Lagos to the calm beauty of the eastern mountains; from the eccentricity of a Nigerian dog show to the decrepit kitsch of the Transwonderland Amusement Park, she explores Nigerian Christianity, delves into the country’s history of slavery, examines the corrupting effect of oil, and ponders the huge success of Nollywood. She finds the country as exasperating as ever, and frequently despairs at the corruption and inefficiency she encounters. But she also discovers that it is far more beautiful and varied than she had ever imagined, with its captivating thick tropical rain forest and ancient palaces and monuments—and most engagingly and entertainingly, its unforgettable people. “The author allows her love-hate relationship with Nigeria to flavor this thoughtful travel journal, lending it irony, wit and frankness.” —Kirkus Reviews
