Book excerpt: This book is the most comprehensive empirical study to date of the social and technical aspects of milling during the ancient and medieval periods. Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence and historical studies, the book examines the chronological development and technical details of handmills, beast mills, watermills and windmills from the first millennium BCE to c. 1500. It discusses the many and varied uses to which mills were turned in the civilisations of Rome, China, Islam and Europe, and the many types of mill that existed. The book also includes comparative regional studies of the social and economic significance of milling, and tackles several important historiographical issues, such as whether technological stagnation was a characteristic of late Antiquity, whether there was an "industrial revolution" in the European Middle Ages based on waterpower, and how contemporary studies in the social shaping of technology can shed light on the study of pre-modern technology.

Download or read book Tolerance and Intolerance on the Triplex Confinium written by International Research Project "Triplex Confinium." International Conference and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triplex Confinium, or triple border, was an actual point in the proximity of the town of Knin in Croatia, between the Habsburg Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice after the peace treaty of Karlowitz in 1699. The Triplex Confinium, as an area and experience of living on the crossroads of different civilizations, cultures and religions in a long historical perspective, inspired an international research project focused upon the comparative history and intercultural approaches of borders and borderlands in Southeast Europe, where three distinctive political, cultural and confessional contexts encountered each other over the centuries. The Triplex Confinium is above all a metaphor of cultural challenges in the areas of multiple borderlands.

Book Ecclesiastical Lordship Seigneurial Power and the Commercialization of Milling in Medieval England

Download or read book Ecclesiastical Lordship Seigneurial Power and the Commercialization of Milling in Medieval England written by Adam Lucas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed study of the role of the Church in the commercialization of milling in medieval England. Focusing on the period from the late eleventh to the mid sixteenth centuries, it examines the estate management practices of more than thirty English religious houses founded by the Benedictines, Cistercians, Augustinians and other minor orders, with an emphasis on the role played by mills and milling in the establishment and development of a range of different sized episcopal and conventual foundations. Contrary to the views espoused by a number of prominent historians of technology since the 1930s, the book demonstrates that patterns of mill acquisition, innovation and exploitation were shaped not only by the size, wealth and distribution of a house’s estates, but also by environmental and demographic factors, changing cultural attitudes and legal conventions, prevailing and emergent technical traditions, the personal relations of a house with its patrons, tenants, servants and neighbours, and the entrepreneurial and administrative flair of bishops, abbots, priors and other ecclesiastical officials.

Book The Implications of Literacy

Download or read book The Implications of Literacy written by Brian Stock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the influence of literacy on eleventh and twelfth-century life and though on social organization, on the criticism of ritual and symbol, on the rise of empirical attitudes, on the relationship between language and reality, and on the broad interaction between ideas and society. Medieval and early modern literacy, Brian Stock argues, did not simply supersede oral discourse but created a new type of interdependence between the oral and the written. If, on the surface, medieval culture was largely oral, texts nonetheless emerged as a reference system both for everyday activities and for giving shape to larger vehicles of interpretation. Even when texts were not actually present, people often acted and behaved as if they were. The book uses methods derived from anthropology, from literary theory, and from historical research, and is divided into five chapters. The first treats the growth and shape of medieval literacy itself. Theo other four look afresh at some of the period's major issues--heresy, reform, the Eucharistic controversy, the thought of Anselm, Abelard, and St. Bernard, together with the interpretation of contemporary experience--in the light of literacy's development. The study concludes that written language was the chief integrating instrument for diverse cultural achievements.
