Book Soil and Water Conservation News Vol 10 May 1989 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil and Water Conservation News, Vol. 10: May, 1989 Rc&d council members are spurring local economies by helping peo ple diversify their interests. They're bringing new and profitable ideas in recreation, tourism, forestry, and farm products. They're solving critical erosion problems for schools and historic sites; cutting flood damage; and helping to improve water quality and quantity, solve waste disposal problems, and improve local emergency assistance. In some areas, rc&d councils are helping to accelerate conservation planning to meet 1985 Farm Bill deadlines. Through local training programs, councils are learning to obtain grants and other resources from private as well as public sources. And councils tell me that obtaining private funding often has a snowball effect. When people in the private sector see the good things rc&d is doing for their communities, they want to be a part of it, too. This is helping councils accomplish even more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil and Water Conservation News, Vol. 1: January 1981 Project Learning Tree provides teachers with dozens of conservation-oriented lesson plans on subjects ranging from Changing Land Values to Did You See That Dogwood Bark? During the past year some 500 Minnesota school teachers have sharpened their skills and added to their environmental education teach ing material by participating in Project Learning Tree workshops. The 11/z-day workshops are sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Educa tion and the American Forestry Insti tute. Although the emphasis of Project Learning Tree is on forestry, the les son plans cover soil, water, land use, and related topics. The program has teaching guides for both elementary and secondary students. Minnesota's workshops include a thorough hands-on introduction to the Project Learning Tree teaching guides. Also, representatives of conservation agencies and organiza tions, including 808, attend to ex plain the services and educational materials that they have available for teachers. The workshops offer credit from the State university system for those teachers who follow up with a written report on how they use the Project Learning Tree activities with their students. About 75 percent of the participants have received credit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Water Problem

Download or read book The Water Problem written by Pat Mulroy and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building water resilience is the single biggest challenge in a changing global climate. The United States faces a water crisis as critical as the energy crisis that once dominated headlines. Like the energy crisis, a solution can be found. Pat Mulroy, for many years general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the lead negotiator on the Colorado River for the State of Nevada, and a Brookings fellow, has gathered a number of practitioners and scholars to show us why we face a crisis caused by climate change and what we can do to alleviate it. While the focus recently has been on California, with its water restrictions and drought, many other parts of the United States are also suffering from current and potential water shortages that will only be exacerbated by climate change. The Water Problem takes us to Miami and the problem of rising oceans fouling freshwater reservoirs; Kansas and Nebraska, where intensive farming is draining age-old aquifers; and to the Southwest United States, where growing populations are creating enormous stresses on the already strained Colorado River. Mulroy and her contributors explore not just the problems, but also what we can do now to put in place measures to deal with a very real crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I believe that it is up to people like us to find the language, create the images and imagine the solutions that will allow us to break out of the vicious circle that threatens public health by threatening our landscapes and water sources . . . Together we can work toward this end. And, we can do it with humour. We can do it with style. And we can do it with grace. Try as we might, parts of North America may not escape the impacts of the global water crisis. The same kinds of water supply and quality issues that have appeared around our crowded planet are already beginning to present themselves here. Unfortunately, this is occurring at a time when, as a direct result of declining global food production, the world is beginning to rely more heavily than ever on agricultural communities in North America to help meet increasingly unattainable food-production goals. Instead of waiting for a water crisis of our own, North Americans may well wish to put the lessons learned elsewhere in the world into active practice. By using the example of others to put our own water-management house in order, North America can possibly avoid the same kinds of problems other countries are facing with respect to the protection of water resources. At the same time, we can employ enlightened attitudes toward the management of water resources to advance many of our own ecological and economic sustainability goals. Passionately conceived, clearly written and citing concrete examples from all over the world, Restoring the Flow is an approachable yet authoritative source, one of the many implements concerned citizens, government officials, businesspeople and policymakers can use and reuse in understanding and addressing this ever-growing global crisis.

Book Running Out of Water

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Rogers
  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press
  • Release : 2010-08-17
  • ISBN : 9780230615649
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Running Out of Water written by Peter Rogers and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2010-08-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is the world's life source and essential to all living creatures. Although we live on the blue planet, only 3 percent of all our water is drinkable. Yet we've grown accustomed to using it with abandon – individuals consume about 80 to 100 gallons per day adding up to the equivalent of an Olympic sized swimming pool every year. By this decade's end, when the world population is predicted to reach 8 billion, we will face severe shortages. In this ground breaking and forward-looking book, Harvard professor Peter Rogers and former general manager of the San Francisco Utilities Commission, Susan Leal give us a sobering perspective on the water crisis—why it's happening, where it's likely to strike, and what puts the worst strain on our supply. They explain how water's unique status as a renewable but finite resource misleads us into thinking we can always produce more of it. They introduce exciting new technologies that can help revolutionize our consumption of water and explain how different areas of the world have taken the helm in alleviating the burden of water shortages. Rogers and Leal show how it takes individuals at all levels to make this happen, from grassroots organizations who monitor their community's water sources, to local officials who plan years in advance how they will appropriate water, to the national government who can invest in infrastructure for water conservation today. Informed and inspiring, Running out of Water is a clarion call for action and an innovative look at how we as a nation and individuals can confront the crisis.
