Book excerpt: Tropical cyclones are cyclonic systems that occur over warm ocean waters in tropical areas and have outer circulations that can stretch more than 1000 kilometers from the storm centre. Every year, over 80 tropical cyclones form over the tropical oceans, posing a serious hazard to people and property in many regions of the world. Almost every year, these abrupt, unpredictable, and ferocious storms cause enormous havoc along the coasts and on the islands that they pass through. The typical life span of a tropical cyclone is 6 to 9 days, but it can range anywhere from a few hours to three to four weeks. Tropical cyclones are well-known for their destructive nature, and they are the deadliest of all-natural catastrophes in terms of human and property damage. Around 80-100 cyclones strike the world each year. Except for the South Atlantic and Southeast Pacific, tropical cyclones originate over ocean basins at lower latitudes in all oceans. Low sea surface temperatures in the South Atlantic and Southeast Pacific basins make cyclogenesis difficult. The North Indian Ocean (NIO) is more prone to the creation of storms in Indian areas. The Indian Ocean (both north and south of the equator) is home to around a quarter of the world cyclones. Tropical storm activity increases worldwide in late summer when the temperature differential between altitude and SST is at its largest. Each basin, on the other hand, has its own seasonal cycles. In different parts of the world, tropical cyclones are referred to by different names. They are known as Hurricanes in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific, and Typhoons in the Western Pacific. They are known as Tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean. The winds of a tropical storm spin anticlockwise in the Northern hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern hemisphere. Tropical cyclones are restricted to a few places and seasons, mostly in the western reaches of the large tropical oceans. Tropical cyclones attain tropical storm intensity (34 knots or more) per year. Approximately 80% of tropical cyclones develop in the ITCZ (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone) or poles ward. Tropical cyclone development can differ from basin to basin due to differences in terrain, geology, oceanography, and large-scale flow patterns

Book excerpt: Recent results from modeling and observational studies demonstrate that the tropical Atlantic is a critical region for processes that maintain the meridional overturning circulation, such as cross-equatorial exchanges, and for sea surface temperature variability that impacts on climate variability of the coupled tropical ocean/atmosphere system. The theme of this book is the inter-hemispheric and inter-gyre exchanges of heat, salt and fresh water, while its goal is to improve the knowledge of the tropical Atlantic dynamics and how it affects the global ocean. A clear understanding of the dynamics of processes that affect the flow of mass and heat between the southern and the northern hemispheres in the upper few hundred meters in the tropical Atlantic and of those associated to the ocean circulation or to surface signals, from decadal, inter-annual to mesoscale periods, becomes necessary to better evaluate their contribution to the interhemispheric mass exchange. These processes are believed to be largely responsible in driving the sea surface temperature, which in turn, is a critical parameter to investigate ocean-atmospheric interactions. Output produced by regional models is also used to complement the observations and to provide additional information on their spatial and temporal variability. The subtropical cells, by bringing water masses subducted in the subtropics to the equator, and zonal currents investigated here contribute to the interhemispheric water exchange. Special attention is also given to the warm and salty anticyclonic rings shed by the North Brazil Current, which are now known to have a much broader impact, not only on interhemispheric water mass transfer, but also on the environment of remote regions. Observations from different sources are blended together, are used to validate model outputs and are also assimilated into models to obtain a more complete and accurate picture of the oceanic circulation and of its time evolution.

Book excerpt: The formation of the South China Sea (SCS) deep basin warm-core and cool-core eddies was studied numerically using the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) with 20 km horizontal resolution and 23 sigma levels conforming to a realistic bottom topography. Numerical integration was divided into pre-experimental and experimental stages. During the preexperimental stage, we integrated the POM model for three years from zero velocity and April temperature and salinity climatological fields with climatological monthly mean wind stresses, restoring type surface salt and heat fluxes, and observational oceanic inflow/outflow at the open boundaries. During the experimental stage, we integrated the POM model for another 16 months under three different conditions: one control and two sensitivity runs (no-wind and no lateral transport). We take the fields of the last 12 months for analysis. The simulation under control run agrees well with earlier observational studies on the South China Sea surface thermal variabilities. In addition, the sensitivity study further confirms that the wind effect is the key factor for generation of the SCS deep basin warm/cool eddy and that the lateral boundary forcing is the major factor for the formation of the strong western boundary currents, especially along the southeast Chinese coast during both summer and winter monsoon seasons.

Book excerpt: Bay of Bengal (BoB) is an affluent region for the mesoscale (eddies) and synoptic scale (cyclones) systems. It occurs primarily through the seasonal variations, dynamical instabilities and equatorial wind forcing mechanisms. The individual or cumulative effect of these changes is vulnerable to the coastal and marine ecosystems. For example, tropical cyclone (TC) AILA experienced a warm core eddy (WCE) before the landfall, and consequently it intensified into a severe cyclonic storm (CS) and remained as a CS up to 15¬†h after the landfall. Its severity produces a heavy rainfall of >18¬†cm¬†day,àí1, thus leads to the coastal flooding. The eddy contribution to the TC is witnessed during and after the landfall. Inappropriately, high resolution in-situ observations are not available to identify such important processes on different time and spatial scales. Therefore, the present chapter analyses the northern BoB eddy induced signals using both in-situ and satellite (advanced microwave scanning radiometer,ÄîAMSR-2) derived products. Two in-situ locations (BD08 and BD09) are employed for this study purpose. The eddy responses at no-eddy, during and after eddy, have been analyzed. Besides, WCE imprints on the overlying atmosphere are also observed. The relationship between sea surface temperature and wind speed over the BoB region is assessed.

Book excerpt: This document contains the viewgraph presentation which investigates the thermohaline/baroclinic scales of the meso-scale eddies associated within the Brazil Malvinas (Falkland) Confluence. One of the eddies investigated was a warm core anti-cyclonic eddy centered about 43 deg 50 min S and 54 deg 15 min W (18-19 October) with a diameter of 125 km. The XBT's and CTD's taken through the eddy were used with a range dependent acoustic prediction ray model (GRASS) to model a cross section of the eddy at 50 Hz comparing propagation loss with source depths of 25, 150, and 500 m and receiver depths of 25, 150, and 500 m. Comparisons were done propagating through the eddy, from the outer edge to the eddy interior, and from the interior to the outer edge. The results were compared with a no eddy, range independent situation. Results showed that due to the presence of a surface duct in the warm core eddy the greatest impact was found propagating a shallow source with a shallow receiver. No effects were seen below 300 m, similar to the North Pacific and Greeland Sea eddies.

Book excerpt: It is now well known that the mid-ocean flow is almost everywhere domi nated by so-called synoptic or meso-scale eddies, rotating about nearly vertical axes and extending throughout the water column. A typical mid ocean horizontal scale is 100 km and a time scale is 100 days: these meso scale eddies have swirl speeds of order 10 cm s -1 which are usually con siderably greater than the long-term average flow. Many types of eddies with somewhat different scales and characteristics have been identified. The existence of such eddies was suspected by navigators more than a century ago and confirmed by the world of C. O'D. Iselin and V. B. Stock man in the 1930's. Measurements from RIV Aries in 1959/60, using the then newly developed neutrally buoyant floats, indicated the main char acteristics of the eddies in the deep ocean of the NW Atlantic while a se ries of Soviet moored current-meter arrays culminated, in POLYGON- 1970, in the explicit mapping of an energetic anticyclonic eddy in the tropical NE Atlantic. In 1973 a large collaborative (mainly U. S. , U. K. ) program, MODE-I, produced synoptic charts for an area of the NW At lantic and confirmed the existence of an open ocean eddy field and es tablished its characteristics. Meso-scale eddies are now known to be of interest and importance to marine chemists and biologists as well as to physical oceanographers and meteorologists.
