Book War History of the Sixth Tank Battalion

Download or read book War History of the Sixth Tank Battalion written by Lord Somers and published by . This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1919, in Blangy-sur-Ternoise where the battalion had been billetted since the armistice, the CO of the 6th Tank Battalion, Lord Somers (late 1st Life Guards) summoned a meeting of all his officers, NCOs and men at which it was unanimously agreed to devote the private funds of the battalion to publishing the battalion history for the benefit of all surviving members and late members, and also of the next-of-kin of all who had fallen in battle or died since joining the battalion. At appendix III is the nominal roll of 242 officers and 1151 other ranks who served with the battalion on the Western Front, for whom the book was written, and I am sure the recipients must have been well satisfied with the finished product. The battalion was formed in Wool (Dorset) in October 1916 and designated 2nd Battalion with A, B and C Companies, and these early days form the opening narrative. At the end of December 1916 the Battalion became known as F Battalion with the companies redesignated 16, 17 and 18. On 13 May 1917 F Battalion landed in France and further instruction was carried on with Mark IV training tanks, a month later the Battalion received their fighting tanks. For the first six months the Battalion fought with Mark IVs, at Third Ypres and Cambrai, and then, in January 1918 they converted to Whippets, or Medium Mark A , and the Battalion title was again changed; it now became the 6th Battalion. With the Whippet the battalion fought through the last year of the war, from Amiens through the advance to victory. By the time of the armistice the 6th Battalion had fought in 27 separate actions employing 290 tanks, of which 83 were knocked out with total casualties of 92 officers and 305 other ranks. There are excellent descriptions of the fighting, often recording the actions and fate of individual tanks, especially at Third Ypres and Cambrai. At the end of each action the casualties are listed by name as are any decorations awarded. Among the latter was Lt Col R.A.West who won the VC while in command in September 1918 having been awarded a Bar to his DSO and the MC during the previous three weeks. His VC was posthumous. This is a very fine history, full of action, and it has a very useful table giving details of each action fought with dates, the number of tanks employed and casualties in personnel and tanks.

Book 6th Battalion The Manchester Regiment in the Great War

Download or read book 6th Battalion The Manchester Regiment in the Great War written by John Hartley and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th Battalion, The Manchester Regiment, was a prewar Territorial unit. Many of its members held white collar positions employed by the Citys legal, financial and stockbroking practices or worked for the major commercial organizations trading and manufacturing cotton goods. It went overseas in September 1914, taking with it many new recruits who would undertake their basic training whilst the Battalion formed part of the British garrison in Egypt. It saw action at Gallipoli from May 1915 until the evacuation at the end of the year and fascinating campaign is dealt with in considerable detail. The Battalion returned to Egypt until the spring of 1917 when it moved to France. The Manchesters saw regular action for most of 1918, coming under attack in the German offensive in March. Throughout the summer and autumn, the Battalion took part in the Advance to Victory and was still advancing when the Armistice was signed in November. The book also recounts the history of the second line battalion, the 2/6th Manchesters, from its inception in 1914 until it was all but destroyed in March 1918.The author draws on official records and personal accounts to tell the story of these fine battalions.

Book The History of the 6th Service Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment 1914 1919

Download or read book The History of the 6th Service Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment 1914 1919 written by F. G. Spring and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment was raised in August 1914 and sailed for Gallipoli in July 1915. Upon arrival, the Battalion was almost immediately thrown into action at the Suvla Bay landings on 6 August 1915. The 6th Lincolns continued to serve at Gallipoli until the evacuation of Suvla. Following a period of respite in Egypt, the Battalion was transferred to the Western Front where it served until Armistice. Compiled from a previously unpublished manuscript written in the 1920's, this book provides a unique and colourful account of the Battalion's history throughout WW1, as told by Colonel F.G. Spring who served with the Battalion in 1915. The book also contains a Roll of Honour listing the names of all those who died with the Battalion, as well as the citations for those awarded medals for gallantry. Given that the Battalion War Diary for Gallipoli was lost, this publication is represents the most comprehensive account of the 6th Lincolns during the Great War.

Book Rangers

Download or read book Rangers written by Michael Julius King and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Leavenworth Paper is a critical reconstruction of World War II Ranger operations conducted at or near Djebel el Ank, Tunisia; Porto Empedocle, Sicily; Cisterna, Italy; Zerf, Germany; and Cabanatuan in the Philippines. It is not intended to be a comprehensive account of World War II Ranger operations, for such a study would have to include numerous minor actions that are too poorly documented to be studied to advantage. It is, however, representative for it examines several types of operations conducted against the troops of three enemy nations in a variety of physical and tactical environments. As such, it draws a wide range of lessons useful to combat leaders who may have to conduct such operations or be on guard against them in the future. Many factors determined the outcomes of the operations featured in this Leavenworth Paper, and of these there are four that are important enough to merit special emphasis. These are surprise, the quality of opposing forces, the success of friendly forces with which the Rangers were cooperating, and popular support.

Book History of the Sixth Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment

Download or read book History of the Sixth Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment written by Capt. E. V. Tempest and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiled at the instigation of the ‘Old Comrades Association' of the 1/6th Battalion of the West Yorkshire regiment, this is a typical no-nonsense history of a down-to-earth unit that saw active service, suffered heavy casualties, and rendered sterling service in some of the very worst fighting seen on the western front during the Great War. With a laconic foreword by General Plumer, in whose 2nd Army the 1/6th West Yorkshires served at Ypres and Passchendaele, the book gives a full account of the battalion's service which, in addition to third Ypres, included action at Nieuport, on the coastal tip of the trenchlines, and on the Somme at Thiepval. After enduring the great German offensives in the spring of 1918, they took part in the Allied counter push, moving from Cambrai to Valenciennes before the Armistice brought the war to an end. With a range of photographs of officers, men, and aerial shots of trench warfare, this volumw has a particularly fine and extensive selection of trench maps as well as Rolls of Honour, decorations etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars and historians offer several theories for the crippling losses suffered by the American Expeditionary Forces on the battlefields of World War I: inexperience, poor leadership, hasty expansion of duties, and others. But until now, most of these studies have focused at the division level or higher. Now, with To the Limit of Endurance, Peter F. Owen offers a tautly worded, historically rigorous, and intensely human survey of the agonizing burden shouldered by the Second Battalion of the Sixth Regiment of U.S. Marines from its formation in Quantico, Virginia, in 1917 until the cessation of hostilities in November of the following year. In places like Belleau Wood and Soissons, these young men, led by dedicated officers, died in staggering numbers—primarily because of the outmoded tactics they had learned. Owen shows how the battalion regrouped after these campaigns, however, and embarked on a period of intense retraining. By the time of the closing weeks of the war, the adjustments they had made allowed them to mold themselves into a coldly efficient military machine. Drawing on a treasure trove of surviving first-hand accounts, Owen expertly combines these individual observations with military records and archival sources to create a mosaic that provides not only a case study of how one organization grappled with transformation but also a tightly focused, ground-level view of the lives—and deaths—of these courageous American military men. The grueling, ultimately triumphant odyssey of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines will appeal to military historians, professional soldiers, and interested general readers.
