  • Author : Hugh Walpole
  • Publisher : Read Books Ltd
  • Release : 2015-06-08
  • ISBN : 1473375029
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book The Old Ladies written by Hugh Walpole and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vintage book contains Hugh Walpole's 1924 novel, "The Old Ladies". This book was written whilst Walpole was staying with his parents in Switzerland. It was begun without much prior thought, and served as a welcome break from another book he had been writing by which he had been utterly absorbed. Inspired by a peculiar old lady encountered by Walpole in Switzerland, this sinister and engrossing tale will appeal to fans of eerie literature, and will be of special interest to collectors of Walpole's masterful work. The chapters of this book include: "Mrs. Amorest Pays a Visit", "Evening in the House - Agatha Payne", "Life of May Beringer", "Red Amber", "Christmas Eve - Polchester Winter Piece", "Agatha Secretly", "Death of Hopes", "May Beringer Tries to Escape", etcetera. Many texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now, in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

Book The Great Man

Download or read book The Great Man written by Edward Pearce and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1721 has many splendours: great houses built by William Kent, fine pictures and the fruits of commerce. But there are also thirteen public hanging days a year, drunkenness is endemic, organised crime rampages through the streets. And politics are ferocious. Only a generation earlier, The Pretender failed to take the Crown; the new King is cursed as a damned foreigner; James's followers - the Jacobites - conspire and are persecuted; the South Sea Bubble collapses.Robert Walpole, once imprisoned for financial chicanery, assumes political control and becomes 'Prime Minister'. He personally detects a Jacobite plot, is dismissed in 1727 on the death of George I, recruits the new King's clever wife, Caroline, and bounces cheerfully back. Coarse, corrupt and cynical, Walpole dominates King, Parliament and Government until 1742. This is Mr Worldywiseman, keeping England out of war for twenty years and setting up a stable and growing economy. All politics of a kind we can recognise today begin with Robert Walpole. And here, in Edward Pearce's elegant book, he is brought vividly back to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walpole, Massachusetts, located about 20 miles southwest of Boston, has undergone an interesting transformation from a rural community dotted with farms, to an industrial landscape dominated by factories and plants, to a modern bedroom suburb of Boston. This volume of over two hundred photographs, many published for the first time, presents a well-rounded view of Walpole from the late eighteenth century into the mid-twentieth century. Readers will see a Walpole that has mostly disappeared and will have the opportunity to stroll down Main Street before it and other roads were paved, to observe and peek into forgotten, antiquated homes and government buildings, and to walk in the shadows of the great mills. Two of the nationally known industries that this book touches upon are Kendall's Curity, which produced diapers, band aids, and other medical supplies; and Bird and Son, which manufactured roofing shingles, siding products, floor coverings, and cardboard boxes.

Book Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole

Download or read book Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole written by Matthew M. Reeve and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole shows that the Gothic style in architecture and the decorative arts and the tradition of medievalist research associated with Horace Walpole (1717–1797) and his circle cannot be understood independently of their own homoerotic culture. Centered around Walpole’s Gothic villa at Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, Walpole and his “Strawberry Committee” of male friends, designers, and dilettantes invigorated an extraordinary new mode of Gothic design and disseminated it in their own commissions at Old Windsor and Donnington Grove in Berkshire, Lee Priory in Kent, the Vyne in Hampshire, and other sites. Matthew M. Reeve argues that the new “third sex” of homoerotically inclined men and the new “modern styles” that they promoted—including the Gothic style and chinoiserie—were interrelated movements that shaped English modernity. The Gothic style offered the possibility of an alternate aesthetic and gendered order, a queer reversal of the dominant Palladian style of the period. Many of the houses built by Walpole and his circle were understood by commentators to be manifestations of a new queer aesthetic, and in describing them they offered the earliest critiques of what would be called a “queer architecture.” Exposing the role of sexual coteries in the shaping of eighteenth-century English architecture, this book offers a profound and eloquent revision to our understanding of the origins of the Gothic Revival and to medievalism itself. It will be welcomed by architectural historians as well as scholars of medievalism and specialists in queer studies.
