Book Curb Service

Download or read book Curb Service written by Scot Sothern and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cruising nighttime byways for an adrenaline fix, Scot Sothern first patronized the marketplace of curbside prostitution surfing the prurient whims of a young man. He dove to the murky depths of sexual obsession and resurfaced five years later, shell-shocked and without excuse. While there, trusty Nikon in hand, Scot, a second-generation photographer, made full-frontal X-rated exposures, black and white, filled with pathos and an uncanny realism. The pictures captured the plight of the disenfranchised in America, those forgotten and drug-addicted. Now he is ready to tell the story behind the photographs, the confessions of a befuddled baby-boomer maintaining a slippery connection to propriety while side-tripping into noirish infatuations with those low in life. Curb Service recounts Sothern’s past as a troubled kid in the 1960s who visited two-dollar whorehouses and as an adult in the 1980s is still at it. A photographer who either can’t get a break or blows it when one comes his way, Scot wants to hold onto jobs, wives, and relationships; he tries to be a good father to the son he loves. Yet he continues picking up street prostitutes, photographing them, having sex with them, living moments of their lives and watching them fade away in a culture that deems them criminal and expendable. It was only a few years ago that Scot’s photography started to receive notice – by influential Drkrm Gallery in Los Angeles – which led to the publication of Lowlife, a photo book, by Stanley Barker in the UK and soon by powerhouse in Brooklyn. His work has since been exhibited world-wide including shows in London, Los Angeles, and Ottawa.

  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Ghosts of Cielo Drive written by David Oman and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote the book from my own unique perspective regarding the spirits or ghosts amongst us. One not commonly seen or shown on TV and rarely discussed, however, I live in what one paranormal expert declared, 'the Mount Everest of Haunted Houses' and 'The Disneyland for the Dead' and have now for over 17 years with no problems or issues. While just down the drive from my house one of the most gruesome and notorious murders of our time was committed on August 8th, 1969 when Charles Manson's 'Family' descended on Roman Polanski's residence on Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills and brutally murdered 5 people including Polanski's wife pregnant Sharon Tate. Now my home is visited by far more than those who were killed down from my home, the house seems to be a 'Ghost Flophouse' according to Mary Anne Winkowski, the real life Ghost Whisperer' she is convinced that it truly is a one of a kind location and my attitude towards my unseen house guests is also unheard of. You see I don't and am not afraid of the spirits that visit and hang out here. My thoughts are that we all will pass from this earth and those who have passed before us returning to visit us isn't something to be scared about, quite to the contrary I believe it is unique to have such an experience and that it's a positive to be one of the few who has had an encounter with a spirit. My motto is "You have more to Fear from the Living than you do the Dead'.

Book Hollywood Boulevard

Download or read book Hollywood Boulevard written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For three years, Dennis Feldman (born 1946) repeatedly walked an eight-block stretch from Hollywood and Vine to the Chinese Theater, called the Walk of Fame, where people flocked to gaze at a sidewalk full of terrazzo stars inlaid with the names of famous (and no longer famous) entertainers. He became obsessed with photographing the characters that gathered there, drawn to the world of stardom, parading their self-made identities--macho and gay, masculine and feminine, biker and hippy--modeled after American archetypes molded by the entertainment industry and the social revolution of the 1960s. Hollywood Boulevard compiles the photographer's large-format, black-and-white portraits into a painfully human character study of social identity and performance."--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: Containing walks and detailed maps from throughout the city, Secret Stairs highlights the charms and quirks of a unique feature of the Los Angeles landscape, and chronicles the geographical, architectural, and historical aspects of the city’s staircases, as well as of the neighborhoods in which the steps are located. From strolling through the classic La Loma neighborhood in Pasadena to walking the Sunset Junction Loop in Silver Lake, to taking the Beachwood Canyon hike through “Hollywoodland” to enjoying the magnificent ocean views from the Castellammare district in Pacific Palisades, Secret Stairs takes you on a tour of the staircases all across the City of Angels. The circular walks, rated for duration and difficulty, deliver tales of historic homes and their fascinating inhabitants, bits of unusual local trivia, and stories of the neighborhoods surrounding the stairs. That’s where William Faulkner was living when he wrote the screenplay for To Have and Have Not; that house was designed by Neutra; over there is a Schindler; that’s where Woody Guthrie lived, where Anais Nin died, and where Thelma Todd was murdered . . . Despite the fact that one of these staircases starred in an Oscar-winning short film—Laurel and Hardy’s The Music Box, from 1932—these civic treasures have been virtually unknown to most of the city’s residents and visitors. Now, Secret Stairs puts these hidden stairways back on the map, while introducing urban hikers to exciting new “trails” all around the city of Los Angeles.

Book Buster Keaton

Download or read book Buster Keaton written by James Curtis and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **One of Literary Hub’s Five “Most Critically Acclaimed” Biographies of 2022** From acclaimed cultural and film historian James Curtis—a major biography, the first in more than two decades, of the legendary comedian and filmmaker who elevated physical comedy to the highest of arts and whose ingenious films remain as startling, innovative, modern—and irresistible—today as they were when they beguiled audiences almost a century ago. "It is brilliant—I was totally absorbed, couldn't stop reading it and was very sorry when it ended."—Kevin Brownlow It was James Agee who christened Buster Keaton “The Great Stone Face.” Keaton’s face, Agee wrote, "ranked almost with Lincoln’s as an early American archetype; it was haunting, handsome, almost beautiful, yet it was also irreducibly funny. Keaton was the only major comedian who kept sentiment almost entirely out of his work and . . . he brought pure physical comedy to its greatest heights.” Mel Brooks: “A lot of my daring came from Keaton.” Martin Scorsese, influenced by Keaton’s pictures in the making of Raging Bull: “The only person who had the right attitude about boxing in the movies for me,” Scorsese said, “was Buster Keaton.” Keaton’s deadpan stare in a porkpie hat was as recognizable as Charlie Chaplin’s tramp and Harold Lloyd’s straw boater and spectacles, and, with W. C. Fields, the four were each considered a comedy king--but Keaton was, and still is, considered to be the greatest of them all. His iconic look and acrobatic brilliance obscured the fact that behind the camera Keaton was one of our most gifted filmmakers. Through nineteen short comedies and twelve magnificent features, he distinguished himself with such seminal works as Sherlock Jr., The Navigator, Steamboat Bill, Jr., The Cameraman, and his masterpiece, The General. Now James Curtis, admired biographer of Preston Sturges (“definitive”—Variety), W. C. Fields (“by far the fullest, fairest and most touching account we have yet had. Or are likely to have”—Richard Schickel, front page of The New York Times Book Review), and Spencer Tracy (“monumental; definitive”—Kirkus Reviews), gives us the richest, most comprehensive life to date of the legendary actor, stunt artist, screenwriter, director—master.
