Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I reached Chattanooga on the evening of April 26th, in the midst of a rattling thunder-shower, -which, to look back upon it, seems to have been prophetic, -and the next morning, after an early breakfast, took an electric car for Missionary Ridge. Among my fellow-passengers were four Louisiana veterans fresh from their annual reunion at Birmingham, where, doubtless, their hearts had been kindled by much fervent oratory, as well as by much private talk of those bygone days when they did everything but die for the cause they loved. As the car mounted the Ridge, one of them called his companions' attention to a place down the valley where "the Rebels and the Yankees" (his own words) used to meet to play cards. "A regular gambling-hole," he called it. Their boys brought back lots[2] of coffee. In another direction was a spot where the Rebels once "had a regular picnic," killing some extraordinary number of Yankees in some incredibly brief time.

At the plow the poet turns words and shapes from the landscape of Walden Ridge, the Cumberland Plateau where the gardener works with a language that tries to capture how poems grow and harvested through the writing process. The vocabulary of birds and the barks of dogs speak through a cathedral of trees as the poet wanders among the seasons.

Book excerpt: Signal Mountain occupies a portion of Walden's Ridge, a plateau on the lower end of the Appalachian Mountains just outside of Chattanooga. The Creek and Cherokee Indians who used this area for hunting sent smoke signals from the palisades overlooking Moccasin Bend, Williams Island, and the Tennessee River. Union soldiers also sent signals from this lookout, which is now part of Signal Point Park. In 1913, Charles E. James opened the Signal Mountain Inn, beginning the community's development. Resort amenities included golf, swimming and boating on Rainbow Lake, a casino and dance hall, and daily walks to the mineral waters of Burnt Cabin Springs. During World War I, soldiers stationed at Fort Oglethorpe visited the area to spend time with their families. Dignitaries and movie stars arrived for the fine dining and clear mountain air. From this time on, the community grew by leaps and bounds.
