Book excerpt: Germany's landmark 1998 election saw for the first time in the Republic's fifty-year historyan incumbent Chancellor and his entire government replaced. In this collection fourteen distinguished scholars, from both sides of the Atlantic, have come together to give the first detailed scholarly account of this historic event. From a variety of perspectives the essays, based on in-depth interviews, explore the election candidates, parties, and issues, and places them within the context of the Federal Republic's history, the end of the Bonn Republic and the beginning of the Berlin Republic. Special chapters focus on the growing importance of women inelectoral politics, voting behavior and the influence of the media, and the significance of the election for the European Union. Based on in-depth interviews with political leaders and extensive field research this book is ideally suited for specialists in German and European politics and the interested reader who wants far more depth of coverage than the main stream media can provide.

Book War and Sacrifice

Download or read book War and Sacrifice written by Tony Pollard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers conflicts from sub-Neolithic Finland to early Modern Ireland, looking at the archaeological evidence for conflict. This evidence ranges from excavation, to osteology, to artefacts, to linguistics, bringing together varying approaches to the study of conflict in the past. Most of the papers relate to prehistory, starting with the sub-Neolithic, running through the Bronze Age and into the Iron Age. There are also papers on Irish conflict archaeology, running from the sixteenth century AD to the 1916 Easter Rising. The prehistoric papers are significant in examining the evidence forensically and trying to establish whether conflict is the best explanation for particular phenomena, while the Irish papers open the rich landscape of conflict in Ireland, with all of the possibilities for investigating conflict that can be found.

Download or read book Weimar written by Michael H. Kater and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-28 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Michael H. Kater chronicles the rise and fall of one of Germany’s most iconic cities in this fascinating and surprisingly provocative history of Weimar. Weimar was a center of the arts during the Enlightenment and hence the cradle of German culture in modern times. Goethe and Schiller made their reputations here, as did Franz Liszt and the young Richard Strauss. In the early twentieth century, the Bauhaus school was founded in Weimar. But from the 1880s on, the city also nurtured a powerful right-wing reactionary movement, and fifty years later, a repressive National Socialist regime dimmed Weimar’s creative lights, transforming the onetime artists’ utopia into the capital of its first Nazified province and constructing the Buchenwald death camp on its doorstep. Kater’s richly detailed volume offers the first complete history of Weimar in any language, from its meteoric eighteenth-century rise up from obscurity through its glory days of unbridled creative expression to its dark descent back into artistic insignificance under Nazi rule and, later, Soviet occupation and beyond.

Book Political Discourse in the Media

Download or read book Political Discourse in the Media written by Anita Fetzer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-27 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book departs from the premise that political discourse is intrinsically connected with media discourse, as shaped by its cultural and transcultural characteristics. It presents a collection of papers which examine political discourse in the media from a cross-culturally comparative perspective in Arab, Dutch, British, Finnish, Flemish, French, German, Israeli, Swedish, US-American and international contexts. By using different theoretical frameworks, such as conversation analysis, discourse analysis, pragmatics and systemic functional linguistics, the papers reflect current moves in political discourse analysis to cross-disciplinary and methodological boundaries by integrating semiotics, particularly multimodality, cognition, context, genre and recipient design.
