Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description'Promise me you'll never tell anyone. This can just be our little secret.' Fourteen years ago, Adam Waddoups made his father a promise - and for fourteen years, he's kept that promise, keeping to himself the secret that could so easily rip the fabric of his family apart. But keeping secrets comes at a cost for Adam, and he is tortured by the memories of the past, trapped in a cycle of guilt that regularly plunges him into episodes of depression and mania, which push him dangerously close to the edge. When Adam is diagnosed with bipolar disorder - a diagnosis which is later adjusted to the lesser known schizoaffective disorder - and referred to a psychotherapist, he is forced to confront the demons of his past - and to finally admit the truth, allowing him, at last, to shape a more positive future for himself. About the AuthorMartine Daniel was born in York in 1981. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a writer, and whilst at secondary school she would often be caught scribbling stories in the back of exercise books during lessons. Her dreams of seeing her name in print never dimmed, despite her life being turned upside down by episodes of mania, depression and psychosis during her late teens and early twenties. In 2003 the pressures of a stressful job brought on an episode of psychotic mania, which led to the breakdown that ended her hopes of a career in bookselling, following which Martine was finally forced into contact with local mental health services. With the help of medication and the support of her family, she began to pick up the pieces of her life and started work on her first novel The Fire in Your Eyes (published 2009), juggling work on the novel with her studies with The Open University. Her second novel, Legacy of Lies, the sequel to The Fire in Your Eyes, was published in April 2010. Wading the Waters of My Mind is her third novel.Martine hopes that by bringing the experience of mental illness alive in her works of fiction she can contribute to the ongoing battle to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Download or read book Grizzlies On My Mind written by Michael W. Leach and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it about Yellowstone National Park that draws millions of visitors from all over the world? If you've visited Yellowstone, you should already know the answer. If you've never visited—or you have, but still don't know the answer—Michael Leach explains it to you in his book of essays, "Grizzlies on My Mind." Leach is a Yellowstone insider with unmatched passion for this nation's first national park. At the age of twenty-two, Leach's dream of becoming a Yellowstone ranger came true. It wasn't long before he'd earned the nickname "Rev" for his powerful Yellowstone "sermons." In "Grizzlies on My Mind," Leach shares his love for Yellowstone—its landscapes and wildlife, especially its iconic bison and grizzlies—as he tells tales that will delight anyone interested in the national park system, wildlife and wild landscapes, rivers and adventure. Heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of human lives lost, efforts to save a black bear cub, a famous wolf who helped Leach through some dark personal days, the unique and oftentimes humorous Yellowstone "culture," backpacking trips that nearly ended in disaster, and Leach's spiritual journey with his Assiniboine-Gros Ventre "brother" fill the pages—and the reader's heart. If you've never been charged by an elk, traveled solo at dawn across Yellowstone's frigid interior (working your way slowly through a herd of peaceful bison in the process), or lain awake in a backcountry tent, listening for the spine-tingling breaths of a curious grizzly—but you crave such experiences, "Grizzlies on My Mind" is the book for you.

Download or read book 2 Mile Open Water Swim with Hurdles written by Martin Miller-Yianni and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells of the trials and tribulations of an English expatriate who set himself an endurance sporting goal just for the hell of it. Living in Bulgaria made the challenge even more demanding and was seen by many as a quintessential eccentric English quirk, pointless and mingled with madness. The goal was to complete a 2-mile open water swimming event based some 3000 kilometres away in London's Hyde Park. The biggest hurdle was not being able to swim with an acute fear of water. Not to be ignored here is age. It was perhaps getting old that motivated him more than anything as opposed to just limp and fade away into the lethargy of old age. The challenge seemed an impossible feat initially with many hurdles that had to be overcome. This was not just from starting out as a non-swimmer fearful of water, but from other logistic issues over the 6-month journey. Getting through the challenge needed lots of determination, strong resolve not least bloody-mindedness.
Download or read book Under Water written by Claire Walsh and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I needed to breathe. Not the short, shallow breaths that keep you alive ... merely existing. I wanted that breath that starts deep down in your being and fills your lungs and limbs with life.' Claire Walsh spent her twenties living the life she thought she was supposed to live, all the while playing hide-and-seek with depression. In her thirties, finding herself single and living with her parents, she decided it was time to chart a different path. In Central America Claire discovered freediving, plunging up to 60 metres below the water's surface without the use of breathing apparatus. It taught her the power of breathwork, but more importantly it taught her how to find freedom in the present moment. Under Water is a candid and captivating story of what it's like to take part in one of the most dangerous sports in the world, and a reminder that sometimes all we need to do is take a deep breath. '20,000 leaues of sparkling adventure and tap-dancing prose.' Ruth Fitzmaurice, author of I Found My Tribe

Download or read book Home Waters written by John N. Maclean and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Beautiful. ... A lyrical companion to his father’s classic, A River Runs through It, chronicling their family’s history and bond with Montana’s Blackfoot River.” —Washington Post A "poetic" and "captivating" (Publishers Weekly) memoir about the power of place to shape generations, Home Waters is John N. Maclean's remarkable chronicle of his family's century-long love affair with Montana's majestic Blackfoot River, the setting for his father's classic novella, A River Runs through It. Maclean returns annually to the simple family cabin that his grandfather built by hand, still in search of the trout of a lifetime. When he hooks it at last, decades of longing promise to be fulfilled, inspiring John, reporter and author, to finally write the story he was born to tell. A book that will resonate with everyone who feels deeply rooted to a landscape, Home Waters is a portrait of a family who claimed a river, from one generation to the next, of how this family came of age in the 20th century and later as they scattered across the country, faced tragedy and success, yet were always drawn back to the waters that bound them together. Here are the true stories behind the beloved characters fictionalized in A River Runs through It, including the Reverend Maclean, the patriarch who introduced the family to fishing; Norman, who balanced a life divided between literature and the tug of the rugged West; and tragic yet luminous Paul (played by Brad Pitt in Robert Redford’s film adaptation), whose mysterious death has haunted the family and led John to investigate his uncle’s murder and reveal new details in these pages. A universal story about nature, family, and the art of fly fishing, Maclean’s memoir beautifully captures the inextricable ways our personal histories are linked to the places we come from—our home waters. Featuring twelve wood engravings by Wesley W. Bates and a map of the Blackfoot River region.
