Download or read book Cell Cell Channels written by František Baluška and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-10 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: he biological sciences are dominated by the idea that cells are the functionally autonomous, physically separated, discrete units of life. TThis concept was propounded in the 19th century by discoveries of the cellular structuring of both plants and animals. Moreover, the ap parent autonomy of unicellular eukaryotes, as well as the cellular basis of the mammalian brain (an organ whose anatomy for a long while defied attempts to validate the idea of the cellular nature of its neurons), seemed to provide the final conclusive evidence for the completeness of *cell theory', a theory which has persisted in an almost dogmatic form up to the present day. However, it is very obvious that there are numerous observations which indicate that it is not the cells which serve as the basic units of biological life but that this property falls to some other, subcellular assemblage. To deal with this intricate problem concerning the fundamental unit of living matter, we proposed the so-called Cell Body concept which, in fact, devel ops an exceedingly original idea proposed by Julius Sachs at the end of the 19th century. In the case of eukaryotic cells, DNA-enriched nuclei are intimately associated with a microtubular cytoskeleton. In this configuration—as a Cell Body—these two items comprise the fundamental functional and struc tural unit of eukaryotic living matter. The Cell Body seems to be inherent to all cells in all organisms.

Download or read book The Developmental Biology of Reproduction written by Clement Markert and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Developmental Biology of Reproduction documents the proceedings of the 33rd symposium of the Society for Developmental Biology. Reproductive Biology was selected as the main theme of the symposium. The symposium aimed to draw center attention on basic aspects of reproduction in both plants and animals in the hope of stimulating research that might provide the necessary foundation for effective, practical control of human reproduction. Five areas were selected for emphasis: the formation of eggs and sperm; the activation of the egg to develop into an embryo; the genetic and biochemical events underlying the early development of the embryo; the hormonal controls operating in the reproductive process; and the general control of implantation and growth of the mammalian embryo in the uterus. Thirteen reports were given by distinguished researchers in each of these areas. All biologists interested in a broad understanding of problems of reproduction will find this symposium interesting and important for their own work.

Download or read book Changing Syntheses in Development written by Meredith Runner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing Syntheses in Development covers the proceedings of the 29th Symposium on ""The Society for Developmental Biology"", held in Albany, New York on June 17-19, 1970. This book is organized into three parts encompassing nine chapters that summarize the changing syntheses during cell and tissue interactions and its interactions to molecular biology, ultrastructure, and morphogenesis. The book initially examines the number of copies and kinds of DNA-like RNA that are synthesized in the nuclei and conserved in the cytoplasm during early development of the frog embryo, Rana pipiens. The following chapter tackles the aspects of energy metabolism on rat embryo at somite stages. A chapter focuses on cell differentiation control in green flagellate Volvox. The second part of the book deals with the general aspects of hormone action, as they relate to problems of development. This part describes a systematic technique for the isolation of hormone-dependent cell strains from corresponding hormone-dependent animal tumors. The concluding part focuses on the use of bone matrix as a morphogenetic substratum. This part also describes the differences in the morphology between collagen fibrils of adult and embryonal connective tissue and the effect of extra- and intracellular factors on the maintenance and formation of epithelial morphology. Developmental and molecular biologists and researchers will greatly benefit from this book.
Download or read book Plant Biology written by Alison M. Smith and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Biology is a new textbook written for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. It is an account of modern plant science, reflecting recent advances in genetics and genomics and the excitement they have created. The book begins with a review of what is known about the origins of modern-day plants. Next, the special features of plant genomes and genetics are explored. Subsequent chapters provide information on our current understanding of plant cell biology, plant metabolism, and plant developmental biology, with the remaining three chapters outlining the interactions of plants with their environments. The final chapter discusses the relationship of plants with humans: domestication, agriculture and crop breeding. Plant Biology contains over 1,000 full color illustrations, and each chapter begins with Learning Objectives and concludes with a Summary.
Download or read book Sexual Interactions in Eukaryotic Microbes written by Danton O'Day and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual Interactions in Eukaryotic Microbes provides a comprehensive discussion of the sexual processes of eukaryotic microorganisms. The book is organized into three parts. Part I presents an overview of intercellular communication, covering the modes of cellular communication and the benefit of using eukaryotic microbes for studying cell communication. Part II on pheromonal interactions includes studies on the role of sex pheromones in organisms such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Allomyces, Volvox, and Neurospora crassa. Part III on cell surface interactions presents studies such as sexual interactions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae; sexual interactions of the cell surface in Paramecium; and the genetics and cellular biology of sexual development in Ustilago violacea. Download or read book Principles of Animal Biology written by Aaron Franklin Shull and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zoölogy is the science of animals. This was the definition centuries ago, when zoölogy was almost exclusively the classification and naming of animals. Since that time there has arisen a vast body of doctrine concerning modes of life, life processes, inter-relations of animals, development, distribution, and descent, most of which has little bearing on classification, which is now founded upon principles as basic as those underlying other branches of science. For the purposes of this volume, anything that has to do with animals is part of zoölogy. This book is, in practice, one long definition of zoölogy. It includes morphology, physiology, ecology, zoögeography, paleontology, taxonomy, and evolution as part of the zoölogical sciences. This book, being a general discussion, will contain elementary facts and principles from each of these branches of science. Students should find it a useful exercise to stop and reflect which of the divisions of zoölogy are, at any given moment, actually being studied.
