Book Physicists on Wall Street and Other Essays on Science and Society

Download or read book Physicists on Wall Street and Other Essays on Science and Society written by Jeremy Bernstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, Jeremy Bernstein has been in contact with many of the world’s most renowned physicists and other scientists, many of whom were involved in politics, literature, and language. In this diverse collection of essays, he reflects on their work, their personal relationships, their motives, and their contributions. Even for those people he writes about that he did not know personally, he provides important insights into their lives and work, and questions their character, their decisions, and the lives they led. In the first three essays, Professor Bernstein looks at economic theory and how some physicists who developed interesting economic models based on derivatives and hedge funds almost led to the country into bankruptcy. In later essays, he discusses a suspect visit to Poland by the great Heisenberg during the Nazi era, a visit that there is almost nothing written about. Included also are essays on ancient languages and a nuclear weapons program in South Africa that was supposedly dismantled. In one particularly humorous essay, he describes how an ill-conceived manned spaceship to be powered by an atomic bomb was being developed by some of the country’s most powerful intellects. The project never got off the ground. Dipping into these pages is like rummaging around in the mind of a genius who has a potpourri of interests and an abundance of fascinating experiences. Bernstein has not only rubbed elbows with some of the finest minds in world, he has worked and played with them. He has sometimes mourned with them and laughed at them. His sharp wit and even sharper analysis make for a fascinating read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogels are made from a three-dimensional network of cross linked hydrophilic polymers or colloidal particles that contain a large fraction of water. In recent years, hydrogels have attracted significant attention for a variety of applications in biology and medicine. This has resulted in significant advances in the design and engineering of hydrogels to meet the needs of these applications. This handbook explores significant development of hydrogels from characterization and applications. Volume 1 covers state-of-art knowledge and techniques of fundamental aspects of hydrogel physics and chemistry with an eye on bioengineering applications. Volume 2 explores the use of hydrogels in the interdisciplinary field of tissue engineering. Lastly volume 3 focuses on two important aspects of hydrogels, that is, drug delivery and biosensing. Contains 50 colour pages.

Book Rotational Isomeric State Models in Macromolecular Systems

Download or read book Rotational Isomeric State Models in Macromolecular Systems written by Matthias Rehan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-05-09 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 40 years, RIS models for hundreds of polymer structures have been developed, and now the RIS approach is available in several software packages. However, users are often faced with the time-consuming task of finding the appropriate RIS parameters among the literature. This book facilitates this task by providing a comprehensive overview of the models available. It reviews the literature from the very first applications to the end of 1994, comprises synthetic as well as naturally occuring macromolecules, and tabulates all the pertinent features of published models. It will thus help readers, even those new to this method, to take advantage of this computationally efficient way of assessing the conformational properties of macromolecular systems.
