Book Volcano Hazards Assessment for the Lassen Region Northern California

Download or read book Volcano Hazards Assessment for the Lassen Region Northern California written by M. A. Clynne and published by Geological Survey (USGS). This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lassen region of the southernmost Cascade Range is an active volcanic area. At least 70 eruptions have occurred in the past 100,000 years, including 3 in the past 1,000 years, most recently in 1915. The record of past eruptions and the present state of the underlying magmatic and hydrothermal systems make it clear that future eruptions within the Lassen Volcanic Center are very likely. Although the annual probability of an eruption is small, the consequences of some types of eruptions could be severe. Compared to those of a typical Cascade composite volcano, eruptive vents at Lassen Volcanic Center and the surrounding area are widely dispersed, extending in a zone about 50 km wide from the southern boundary of Lassen Volcanic National Park north to the Pit River. This report presents a discussion of volcanic and other geologic hazards in the Lassen area and delineates hazards zones for different types of volcanic activity. Owing to its presence in a national park with significant visitorship, its explosive behavior, and its proximity to regional infrastructure, the Lassen Volcanic Center has been designated a "high threat volcano" in the U.S. Geological Survey National Volcano Early Warning System assessment. Volcanic eruptions are typically preceded by seismic activity and ground deformation, and the Lassen area has a network of seismometers and Global Positioning System stations in place to monitor for early warning of volcanic activity.

Book Volcanic Hazards

Download or read book Volcanic Hazards written by R. J. Blong and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-12-12 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic Hazards: A Sourcebook on the Effects of Eruptions provides a comprehensive discussion of volcanic eruptions and their effects. This volume provides background data on volcanic activity with attention directed specifically at those types of activity and those characteristics which are hazardous. It establishes the direct effects of volcanic eruptions on humans in terms of death and injuries, and social aspects such as perception of eruption hazards, evacuation, panic, looting, and religious beliefs. It discusses the indirect consequences of volcanic eruptions for humans by illustrating the effects on buildings, utilities, communication networks and machinery, agriculture, and commercial activity. This book should be of interest to planners, engineers, city administrators, agriculturalists, and emergency services personnel who must deal with the effects of volcanic hazards; to volcanologists and geologists who did not know eruptions affected so many things; to geographers, environmentalists, and natural hazard scientists who are interested in the interrelatedness of phenomena; and to citizens who have experienced, or might yet experience, some of these effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that California has four seasons: drought, flood, fire, and earthquakes. Certainly, the Golden State has experienced an abundance of these disasters in its history. The twenty-four chapters in this illustrated book highlights some of the major events that have occurred in the state. Some of these disasters occurred long ago, while others document recent events. Some are well-known, such as the snow-trapped Donner Party of 1846 and the unforgettable fire and earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Others are less familiar, such as the wreck of the paddle ship Brother Jonathan in 1865 or the fire at the Argonaut Mine in 1922. Included are disasters involving ships, planes, trains, and cars while others deal with tsunamis, dust storms, floods, and the collapses of bridges and dams. Some, like the shark attacks along the California coast, happen year after year and affect only a few. Other recurring disasters, like summer wildfires, claim dozens of lives and hundreds of structures, destroy wildlife, devastate miles of land, and even wipe out whole towns. The spectacular eruption of Lassen Peak has occurred only once. Although disasters usually bring loss, they sometimes bring us hard-won knowledge that may prevent future similar tragedies. Out of each disaster, acts of heroism, bravery, and compassion occur as individuals and groups attempt to aid victims in need. Illustrated with black & white archival photos. Featuring true stories researched and written about the most dramatic and diverse disasters from the Golden State. Includes natural and man-made disasters dating from 1771 to 2020.

Book Volcanic Eruptions and Their Repose Unrest Precursors and Timing

Download or read book Volcanic Eruptions and Their Repose Unrest Precursors and Timing written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic eruptions are common, with more than 50 volcanic eruptions in the United States alone in the past 31 years. These eruptions can have devastating economic and social consequences, even at great distances from the volcano. Fortunately many eruptions are preceded by unrest that can be detected using ground, airborne, and spaceborne instruments. Data from these instruments, combined with basic understanding of how volcanoes work, form the basis for forecasting eruptionsâ€"where, when, how big, how long, and the consequences. Accurate forecasts of the likelihood and magnitude of an eruption in a specified timeframe are rooted in a scientific understanding of the processes that govern the storage, ascent, and eruption of magma. Yet our understanding of volcanic systems is incomplete and biased by the limited number of volcanoes and eruption styles observed with advanced instrumentation. Volcanic Eruptions and Their Repose, Unrest, Precursors, and Timing identifies key science questions, research and observation priorities, and approaches for building a volcano science community capable of tackling them. This report presents goals for making major advances in volcano science.
