Simultaneously a "spy" for his own government and a cultural ambassador for countless foreigners and fellow countrymen, Ying lived out his life as a bridge between China and the West, gaining a singular perspective on matters related to culture and politics. While suffering from cirrhosis of the liver during the final decade of his life, Ying Ruocheng reflected on his experiences, collaborating with coauthor Claire Conceison to tell his story. Book excerpt: A fine-grained ethnography exploring the sociopolitical power of Kurdish women’s voices in contemporary Turkey. “Raise your voice!” and “Speak up!” are familiar refrains that assume, all too easily, that gaining voice will lead to empowerment, healing, and inclusion for marginalized subjects. Marlene Schäfers’s Voices That Matter reveals where such assumptions fall short, demonstrating that “raising one’s voice” is no straightforward path to emancipation but fraught with anxieties, dilemmas, and contradictions. In its attention to the voice as form, this book examines not only what voices say but also how they do so, focusing on Kurdish contexts where oral genres have a long, rich legacy. Examining the social labor that voices carry out as they sound, speak, and resonate, Schäfers shows that where new vocal practices arise, they produce new selves and practices of social relations. In Turkey, recent decades have seen Kurdish voices gain increasing moral and political value as metaphors of representation and resistance. Women’s voices, in particular, are understood as potent means to withstand patriarchal restrictions and political oppression. By ethnographically tracing the transformations in how Kurdish women relate to and employ their voices as a result of these shifts, Schäfers illustrates how contemporary politics foster not only new hopes and desires but also create novel vulnerabilities as they valorize, elicit, and discipline voice in the name of empowerment and liberation.

Book excerpt: Carry on Talking: How Dead Are the Voices? is the story of the advent of Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) - a method of communication between the "dead" and the living using electronic devices - pioneered in Europe by Friedrich Jürgenson in the 1960s, and later by Konstantin Raudive in the seventies. Peter Bander, a psychologist who had lectured on religious education and ethics, had joined British publisher Colin Smythe Ltd in 1966, and in 1969 was asked by Smythe to evaluate Dr. Konstantin Raudive's research with a view to publishing the work in the English language. Raudive's book had been published in Germany in 1968 under the title: Unhörbares wird hörbar (The Inaudible Becomes Audible). Bander was understandably sceptical when first confronted with the phenomena. He stated: 'My first reaction to the book was negative because the claims made by the author appeared to me not only far-fetched but outrageous ... The thought of dead people communicating through a tape recorder seemed ludicrous and too silly to be taken seriously'. Unbeknown to Bander, Smythe had conducted his own experiments which proved to be conclusive. This led to Raudive's book being published in the English language under the title, Breakthrough: An Amazing Experiment in Electronic Communication with the Dead (1971) - now considered by many to be a classic in the genre - and put Bander at the centre of the controversial yet fascinating subject of life after death.
