He also wrote thirty-one sermons as a commentary on Isaiah 13–16 and 182 surviving liturgical sermons, mostly addressed to his monks. This volume contains the second half of Aelred's ninety-eight liturgical sermons from the Reading-Cluny collection, Sermons 134 through 182, as well as Aelred's sermon for the translation of Saint Edward the Confessor in 1163, from the critical edition by Peter Jackson first published in Cistercian Studies Quarterly. It contains sixteen Marian sermons as well as a sermon for the birth of Saint Katherine and a sermon for nuns.

Book excerpt: There are probably two basic questions Jews have recycled and asked for literally centuries: Is it good for the Jews? And, when (and under what circumstances) is Mashiach coming? In this scarcely known text by the Gaon of Vilna's grand-nephew and disciple, Rabbi Hillel Shaklover, probably the best and most detailed answer extant to the second question is given. And yes, of course, the implication is that it will be good for the Jews-though the passage to Mashichut and Geulah requires difficult preliminary steps, including great battles (both metaphysical and physical) and extraordinary deeds and Mitzvot.

Book An Abecedarian of Animal Spirit Guides

Download or read book An Abecedarian of Animal Spirit Guides written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every person has owned a pet at one time or another in life or known someone who has. In all world religions, animals serve as spirit guides; there is spirituality to animal and human dialogue. Animals have the ability to help us reach wholeness if we learn their wisdom and integrate it into our lives. This abecedarian--a book whose contents are in alphabetical order--explores the spiritual growth that is possible by reflecting on the wisdom of creatures, which serve as spirit guides in all world religions and help humans experience the divine. The author explores animal spirit guides in the Bible, The Quran, The Dhammapada, The Rig Veda, The Analects of Confucius, stories from Aesop and Grimm, and much more. In these pages you can explore bears and bees, eagles and elephants, ravens and roosters, tadpoles and turtles, and many more. For each of the thirty-two entries, the author presents a text identifying the animal spirit guide, a reflective study, a question for journaling or personal meditation, and a concluding prayer. The spiritual life can be nourished in many ways; in this book it is enhanced by animal spirit guides.

Book Depicting Orthodoxy in the Russian Middle Ages

Download or read book Depicting Orthodoxy in the Russian Middle Ages written by Ágnes Kriza and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of Divine Wisdom, traditionally associated with the Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod, is an innovation of the fifteenth century. The icon represents the winged, royal, red-faced Sophia flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist. Although the image has a contemporaneous commentary, and although it exercised a profound influence on Russian cultural history, its meaning, together with the dating and localisation of the first appearance of the iconography, has remained an art-historical conundrum. By exploring the message, roots, function, and historical context of the creation of the first, most emblematic and enigmatic Russian allegorical iconography, Depicting Orthodoxy in the Russian Middle Ages deciphers the meaning of this icon. In contrast to previous interpretations, Kriza argues that the winged Sophia is the personification of the Orthodox Church. The Novgorod Wisdom icon represents the Church of Hagia Sophia, that is, Orthodoxy, as it was perceived in fifteenth-century Rus. Depicting Orthodoxy asserts that the icon, together with its commentary, was a visual-textual response to the Union of Florence between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, signed in 1439 but rejected by the Russians in 1441. This interpretation is based on detailed interdisciplinary research, drawing on philology, art history, theology, and history. Kriza's study challenges some key assumptions concerning the relevance of Church Schism of 1054, the polemics between the Greeks and the Latins about the bread of Eucharist, and the role of the Union of Florence in the history of Russian art. In particular, by studying both well- and lesser-known works of art alongside overlooked textual evidence, this volume investigates how the Christian Church and its true faith were defined and visualized in Rus and Byzantium throughout the centuries.

This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelation of Jesus Christ Decoded follows the NKJV of the book of Revelation to capture the natural, metaphorical, and spiritual interpretations of scripture. The book is designed not only for those of Christian faith but also for anyone who wishes to understand what Christian doctrine is really about without the religiosity that some denominations might adhere to. At the same time, it provides spiritual insights on the fuller meaning of some scriptural verses, such that all readers will come away with a refreshing new insight and understanding. The book is broken down into three distinct areas: foundational doctrine; prophetic (scroll), declaration (trumpets), and judgment (bowls) affirmations; and end-times prophecy. In all areas, the interpretation has been validated by other scripture and references to create an accurate and reasonable illustration that readers will comprehend as concepts are presented. The author’s hope is that you enjoy this book and come away with a better appreciation of the last book of the Bible and what God has done for you.

Book Gemstone of Paradise

    Book Details:
  • Author : S. J. G. Ronald Murphy
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-07-27
  • ISBN : 0190454024
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Gemstone of Paradise written by S. J. G. Ronald Murphy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Holy Grail has gripped the imaginations of millions since it first appeared in medieval romances, among them Wolfram von Eschenbach's Middle High German Parzival (c. 1210). Strangely, the Grail is identified in Parzival not as a cup or dish, but as a stone. This oddity is usually interpreted merely as further evidence of the difficulty of discerning the true sources of the Grail legend. G. Ronald Murphy seeks to illuminate this mystery and to enable a far better appreciation of Wolfram's insight into the nature of the Grail and its relationship to the Crusades. Wolfram's "sacred stone" was in fact a consecrated altar, precious by virtue of the sacrament but also, Murphy argues, by virtue of the material from which it was made: a precious green stone associated with the rivers of Paradise. Parzival, Murphy believes, was intended as an argument against continued efforts by Latin Christians to recover the Sepulchre by force. In Wolfram's story, warring Christians and Muslims are brought together in peace by the power of the Grail - a stone Murphy believes still exists. An entirely original reading of Wolfram's famous text, this engrossing and accessible book appeals not only to scholars and students of medieval literature but to anyone who is drawn to the lasting mystery of the Holy Grail.

Book Born for Restoration

Download or read book Born for Restoration written by AviGayle O'Hare and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born for Restoration is about my life. "Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you, and before you came out of the womb I set you apart" (Jeremiah 1:5, ISR). Psalm 23 is a song sung about a life starting and experiencing the tests of discovering our purpose and who is with us as we go through the birth canal until eternity. 1. I am convinced that even before I was in my mother's womb the Lord was my Shepherd; with Him I never experienced lack. 2. He instructed me in the comfort of the womb to lie down in green pastures as He spoke to me throughout my journey. I was guided beside still waters parting the way into this world. The river of life spoke through the Lord as a Spirit of comfort and calm embraced me. 3. Leaving the comfort of mercy (Heb: Rachem=womb) when I entered the world and made wrong choices the Lord turns back my being; He leads me on the cycles of righteousness. This was the beginning of my restoration birth. I was told this journey is not just about you, but you are a voice telling people who I am. I learned His name, and this was one of the most important aspects of this message. 4. As I ran my race then walked through the valley of the shadow of death, I did not fear because He told me I did not give you a spirit of fear. I gave you a spirit of love and power through my Spirit and a steadfast mind toward Me. I Am with you. The Lord disciplined me when I needed it, and that was a comfort because He was all about preserving my life as any good Father desires. 5. I recognized the tables as the tablets He set before me in the presence of my enemies. These commandments were needed, so I looked at them and not the faces of my enemies. As time continues, this journey with the Lord of Restoration sets me apart by anointing my mind and my life overflowing with a desire to listen and obey His Word and influence others to consider this journey of restoration. 6. As a result of repentance, only goodness and loving commitment follows me. And now I know my journey is to dwell in the house of the Lord to the length of days!
