Book Vocational English

Download or read book Vocational English written by William R. Bowlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational English: A Textbook for Commercial and Technical Schools Each year it becomes more difficult for an American to "get along in the world" unless he speaks and writes good English. This book is an attempt to provide the main essentials of an English training sufficient for competent work in any ordinary vocation. Part One presents the principles of correct English - the laws of the language as to word formation, spelling, punctuation, and, above all, correct sentence making. The student who thoroughly masters Part One will not make the common blunders that mar the writing even of many college students -blunders that sometimes give rise to the charge that our education fails to prepare young people for business. Part Two provides for practice in composition, both oral and written, of the kinds most directly useful in everyday life. It is not intended that Part One as a whole shall precede Part Two in teaching. Both parts will naturally be used to some extent side by side, the teacher assigning composition work from Part Two along with study of the principles developed in Part One. The following specific suggestions as to the use of the book may be helpful: (1) The first seven chapters make an obvious natural unit, providing a review of the grammatical foundation for correct speaking and writing. This study begins with the sentence and its main elements, because the fundamental necessity of intelligible composition is proper sentence structure. (2) Chapter VIII (Punctuation) can be used at any time after the student has a fair knowledge of correct sentence making, and will be valuable for reference throughout the course. (3) Chapters IX-XI inclusive may be studied at the teacher's discretion in relation to other parts of the work; but the word study of Chapter IX will be helpful as a basis for the spelling review in Chapter X. Book English for Business as Applied in Commercial Technical and Other Secondary Schools

Download or read book English for Business as Applied in Commercial Technical and Other Secondary Schools written by Edward Harlan Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English for Business, as Applied in Commercial, Technical, and Other Secondary Schools This composition text is designed to meet the needs of all high schools that aim to prepare pupils for the business of life. In using the title English for Business, the author wishes to suggest breadth rather than limitation of purpose. About eighty-five per cent of the pupils in our high schools never go to college but, upon graduation, engage in some business or professional pursuit. This is especially true of boys. Another large group of pupils, in both classical and vocational high schools, find it necessary to work in stores, offices, and shops in free time in order to support themselves while attending school. Because of these facts, the author has aimed to create a book which will supply both of these groups with the practical training necessary for such immediate life purposes. The ultimate aim of every high school course in English composition is to train pupils to speak and write with clearness, accuracy, and directness upon subjects of interest which are within their grasp. With this conviction in mind, the author has included in this text such exercises as are suited to the knowledge and experience of pupils of the high school age. Many of these exercises have been suggested by pupils as a result of their activities in business or technical occupations. • Author : Stephen Billett

Download or read book Vocational Education written by Stephen Billett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses what constitutes vocational education as well as its key purposes, objects, formation and practices. In short, it seeks to outline and elaborate the nature of the project of vocational education. It addresses a significant gap in the available literature by providing a single text that elaborates the scope and diversity of the sector, its key objectives (i.e. vocations and occupations), its formation and development as an education sector, and the scope of its purposes and considerations in the curriculum. The volume achieves these objectives by discussing and defining the concept of vocational education as being that form of education that seeks to advise individuals about, prepare them for, and further develop their capacities to perform the kinds of occupations that societies require and individuals need to participate in—and through which they often come to define themselves. In particular, it discusses the distinctions between occupations as a largely social fact and vocations as being a socially shaped outcome assented to by individuals. As people identify closely with the kinds of occupations they engage in, the standing of, and the effectiveness of vocational education is central to individuals’ well-being, competence and progress. Ultimately, this book argues that the provision of vocational education needs to realise important personal and social goals.

Book English for Vocational Purposes

Download or read book English for Vocational Purposes written by Averil Coxhead and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English for Vocational Purposes provides a linguistic description of English in the context of the trades and investigates how this specialist language is used in real-world contexts. As the demand for English-speaking workers in the trades grows internationally, a major gap in the research on language in the trades is evident. Based on courses in construction and engineering at a polytechnic in New Zealand, this book offers an empirical response to this gap in research. Features of this book include: new research on linguistic features of written and spoken texts in trades education, with a special focus on discourse, visual elements of written texts and vocabulary; real-life examples of the language in context, along with implications for teaching and learning and a chapter devoted to putting research findings into practice; qualitative and quantitative data to support examples and shed light on the most complex aspects of English as a trades language; supplementary material online which includes technical word lists in areas of carpentry, plumbing, automotive technology and fabrication (welding). Paving the way for a new research agenda in the field of ESP, English for Vocational Purposes is key reading for advanced students, researchers and practitioners in the areas of ESP, trades education and vocational education.

Book English in Business

Download or read book English in Business written by Dudley Miles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in Business: For Students in Commercial and General Secondary Schools This book is for boys and girls who are going out into active life rather than for those who go on to college. It will meet the needs of those commercial high schools that train exclusively for a business career. It will also meet the needs of the general high schools with commercial departments or elective courses in business, for it contains the fundamentals of good writing for any purpose whatever. It should prove useful in all those continuation and corporation schools that give training to boys and girls who have gone to work before securing a high school diploma. In short, it is designed to meet the needs of all secondary schools that pursue the larger aims of business education. Business men are no longer content with boys and girls who have been prepared merely as stenographers and bookkeepers. Commercial courses, to be sure, endeavor to train young people to do one thing, or a few related things, with skill and accuracy. But they also endeavor to furnish wide knowledge of the whole business field, so that the pupil may pass easily from his first position into those business activities which his or her peculiar abilities will make most congenial. In this wider training, the instruction in English is of prime importance. As the Committee on Business Education phrases it: "English is the most fundamental, universal, and important subject of the commercial curriculum."
