Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roots of Vocational Education, 1931: A Survey of the Origins of Trade and Industrial Education Found in Industry, Education, Legislation and Social Progress America today is one of the foremost Of industrial nations. Among the other nations of the world few can compete with it in the quantity and quality of industrial products. Even after the domestic wants have been satisfied, America can produce to such an extent that foreign markets can be supplied, if not dominated. In reaching this pinnacle Of industrial supremacy, America has undergone tremendous changes since its discovery. From a vast trackless wilderness in the sixteenth century it has reached a position in the twentieth century comparable, if not superior, to the positions held by the more advanced of the ancient na tions of Europe. The great changes which have occurred have been felt in all spheres of America's activities. Industry, politics, education, religion, philosophy, and social life have evolved in this short space in an amazing manner. Even today change is ever tak ing place. A cross section of the schools of modern America presents a vastly different picture from a similar survey at the close of the seventeenth century. The development of the country's natural resources, the influences of the Industrial Revolution, the Opening of the great west and the evolution of industry have left their mark upon education as well as upon the other departments of social life. Book Three Lectures on Vocational Training Classic Reprint

Download or read book Three Lectures on Vocational Training Classic Reprint written by Georg Kerschensteiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Lectures on Vocational Training The contribution that honest toil makes to the child-character is just as rich, possibly, as that of any other specific line of school work. Earnest, self-directed effort is the base of all habit and the very cornerstone of char acter. Nothing so crystallizes the crude charcoal of childhood into the diamonds of humanity as systematic self - directed effort. What we have to beware of is that this industrial work, this honest toil, does not degenerate into drudgery. And this danger will be avoided when a well-organized continuation school keeps pace with the period of apprenticeship, giving it meaning and thoroughness, making it many-sided, taking hold of and ennobling all its interests. Even the hardest work ceases to be a torment when we perform it with all our hearts. The introduction of industrial work or manual training into the upper classes of the primary school is without doubt a most useful undertaking in the interests of industrial education. We have long adopted this plan in Munich, although we have not carried it so far as the ecoles professionnelles in Belgium and France. Indeed, from a social and economic standpoint it is much easier than the establishment of well - organized continua tion schools. For the elementary classes do not have to struggle against the egoism of employers. But this cannot take the place of well-developed continuation schools. For the aim and end of all this training cannot be merely industrial education. Its aim and end is the education of the man, whom it will not permit to be identified with and lost in the workman. And the modern state can never hope to become a state of culture and justice till it has succeeded, by the right manner of instruo tion, in restoring to work, robbed of its divinity by the advance of industry, its educational powers. Much of the material composing this bulletin has therefore been drawn from the educational and general social experiences of the Writers. This bulletin has been hurriedly prepared; therefore, it may lack many desired refinements of organization. It is intended primarily for the use of those preparing to teach part time classes. It will, however, be useful to superintendents of schools, boards of education, principals, teachers, and the employers of youth Who are subject to the compulsory Part-time Education Act. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Learning to Earn: A Plea and a Plan for Vocational Education We do not confine ourselves, however, to wasting material things. We waste life as no others do. The annual toll of those who are killed and wounded by vehicles in the streets of New York alone would dim the records of many a sanguinary battlefield. Many a war has come, has run its bloody course and has ended without as many vic tims in killed and wounded as our industries show each year. There are among us excellent people quite disturbed over bloodshed in time of war who have little to say respecting the bloodshed in times of peace. It is true that safety first is becoming a familiar motto, but it is also true that the warning falls too often on heedless ears and that the daily sacrifice goes on. Wherever there is vital interaction between a mind and its world there is real education. Edu cative power is, thus, broadly distributed. Its centres of influence are the social institutions school, home, church, vocation, and neighbor hood life. Together they bear the total work of training men, with all the economy and efficiency which comes through a division of labor. In pro portion to the relative strength and weakness of their structures, they supplement and reinforce one another.
