Download or read book The Organization Man written by William H. Whyte and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarded as one of the most important sociological and business commentaries of modern times, The Organization Man developed the first thorough description of the impact of mass organization on American society. During the height of the Eisenhower administration, corporations appeared to provide a blissful answer to postwar life with the marketing of new technologies—television, affordable cars, space travel, fast food—and lifestyles, such as carefully planned suburban communities centered around the nuclear family. William H. Whyte found this phenomenon alarming. As an editor for Fortune magazine, Whyte was well placed to observe corporate America; it became clear to him that the American belief in the perfectibility of society was shifting from one of individual initiative to one that could be achieved at the expense of the individual. With its clear analysis of contemporary working and living arrangements, The Organization Man rapidly achieved bestseller status. Since the time of the book's original publication, the American workplace has undergone massive changes. In the 1990s, the rule of large corporations seemed less relevant as small entrepreneurs made fortunes from new technologies, in the process bucking old corporate trends. In fact this "new economy" appeared to have doomed Whyte's original analysis as an artifact from a bygone day. But the recent collapse of so many startup businesses, gigantic mergers of international conglomerates, and the reality of economic globalization make The Organization Man all the more essential as background for understanding today's global market. This edition contains a new foreword by noted journalist and author Joseph Nocera. In an afterword Jenny Bell Whyte describes how The Organization Man was written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It really cuts through the honey glaze of self-help and hits you right where you need it." — Holly Bourne, author of How Do You Like Me Now? In a world that values autonomy, it's challenging to think that you could arrive at your destination with the help and companionship of other people. The root of this transformative concept is the essential human trait of caring — also known as giving a f**k. Journalist and life coach Felicity Morse shows how caring can transform lives on both small and large scales. In funny, wise prose, she discusses how to nail self-love, embrace the idea that we are all connected, and cultivate compassion for the wider world. So don't give up — give a f**k! "Morse's encouraging work will aid any reader looking to improve self-care in order to more effectively help others." — Publishers Weekly "Felicity Morse's writing made me feel more seen and more sane in what can often seem like an unsalvageably lunatic, lamentable and far-from-luminous modern world … revelatory. She offers insightful, practical, genuinely try-this-and-your-life-could-well-be-better approaches that work, and work hard. This book will make you feel brighter, in all ways. Get it, and get your neon on." — Alix Fox, The Guardian sex columnist "This is a hug in the form of a book. It's clear-thinking, down-to-earth, compassionate, and, above all, necessary." — Suzannah Lipscomb, historian and TV presenter "Felicity Morse leads the new generation of feisty, embodied troops into the soulful battles that could save us all." — Jamie Catto "Part philosophy, part psychology, and part self-help, Give a F**k is a genuinely insightful book that lays out, in the simplest and clearest terms, why and how we should all give a f**k . . . about ourselves, about other people, and about the universe we inhabit. If you didn't give a f**k before you read it, I challenge you not to give a f**k after you have." — Jim Piddock

Because this book is about endurance, it is also about courage and hope. These individuals have shown that they have the courage to hope for the promise of a new day. In sharing their experiences with me, they are communicating their particular vulnerabilities to suicide ideation and their specific resiliencies to suicide death. In this way, they are addressing the risk factors of suicide ideation while also expressing the protective factors that prevent suicide death. While this book focuses on Asian American college students, it is not just for Asian Americans or college students. It is for all of us who identify with stories of human vulnerability and resiliency"--

Download or read book The Impact of a Sense of Belonging in College written by Erin Bentrim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sense of belonging refers to the extent a student feels included, accepted, valued, and supported on their campus. The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover, belonging is influenced by the campus environment, relationships, and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors, the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. A compendium of research, applications, and approaches to sense of belonging did not exist, so they brought this book into being to serve as a single point of reference in an emerging and promising field of study.

Download or read book Independent Thinking on Transition written by Dave Harris and published by Crown House Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Dave Harris, Independent Thinking on Transition: Fostering better collaboration between primary and secondary schools is an inspirational compendium of practical strategies to empower primary and secondary school leaders to work together to get transition right. Foreword by Ian Gilbert. When it comes to looking at the quality of our current schooling system, the biggest elephant in the room is transition. We do it the way we've always done it and, in so many ways and despite our best intentions, we often end up doing it badly. But, as ever, there is another way. Which is where Independent Thinking Associate Dave Harris comes in. With an impressive track record in leadership that includes establishing one of England's all-too-rare all-through 318 state schools, Dave knows first-hand how much can be achieved when all phases work together and keep the children, not the system, at the heart of all they do. In this book he tackles school transition head-on, sharing a wealth of practical approaches and vividly illustrating how primary and secondary schools can better collaborate to ensure their pupils enjoy a smooth and effective move between the two phases. Dave's passion for joined-up thinking between different phases shines through in his writing, as does his ingenuity when it comes to the design and delivery of programmes that work. He provides a clear explanation of the differences between transition and induction programmes, and also shares a comprehensive set of appendices in which he presents a range of materials to support the ideas put forward in the book. Suitable for all school leaders from heads of department and heads of year to head teachers and transition leads in primary and secondary schools. Independent Thinking on Transition is one of a number of books in the Independent Thinking On series from the award-winning Independent Thinking Press.
