Book excerpt: Visions in My Minds Eye presents a collection of poems in which poet Irmagard Anchang Langmia conjures the lives of othersacademic, religious, secular, or otherwisefrom her imaginative mind. This collection represents a multitude of cultural experiences rooted in everyday, routine life at home in her native Cameroon and abroad. The poems in the first part of Visions in My Minds Eye are all academic in nature, each dedicated to students she has taught at Bowie State University. These poems illuminate varying themes and subjects ranging from the notion of knowledge to responsibility. In the second part of the collection, the poems are religious. While a number of them are written in memory of Irmagards late father Dr. Ngongwikuo, she also explores visual images of her life in Cameroon in a startling, meditative, and dreamlike state of mind. In the third part of the collection, she has written love poems drawn mostly from her imaginary world of romantic bliss. The fourth section of the collection includes secular poems covering a variety of themes based on the daily rhythm of our lives. The fifth and final part of Visions in My Minds Eye takes a critical look at basic human nature, morality, and the human condition during times of political upheaval. Visions in My Minds Eye portrays vivid images that capture the imagination and unravel an intriguing world that leaves the mind soul-searching for answers.

Book excerpt: A rich, thought-provoking collection of essays, critiques and interviews from the influential author of Ain't I a Woman and All About Love 'If one could make a people lose touch with their capacity to create, lose sight of their will and their power to make art, then the work of subjugation, of colonization, is complete. Such work can be undone only by acts of reclamation.' In a collection of essays, critiques and interviews, bell hooks responds to the ongoing dialogues about producing, exhibiting and criticising art and aesthetics in a world increasingly concerned with identity politics. hooks shares her own experience of the transformative power of art whilst exploring topics ranging from art in education and the home to the politics of space and imagination as a revolutionary tool. She positions her writings on visual politics within the ever-present question of how art can be empowering within the Black community. Speaking with artists such as Carrie Mae Weems and Alison Saar, and examining the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Art on My Mind is a generous and expansive body of work that has become increasingly relevant since it was first published in 1995. Here is an essential tool for understanding the contemporary moment, and a fundamental text for any reader concerned with making and sustaining a democratic artistic culture.

Book Dreams and Visions in the Early Middle Ages

Download or read book Dreams and Visions in the Early Middle Ages written by Jesse Keskiaho and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-19 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams and visions played important roles in the Christian cultures of the early Middle Ages. But not only did tradition and authoritative texts teach that some dreams were divine: some also pointed out that this was not always the case. Exploring a broad range of narrative sources and manuscripts, Jesse Keskiaho investigates how the teachings of Augustine of Hippo and Pope Gregory the Great on dreams and visions were read and used in different contexts. Keskiaho argues that the early medieval processes of reception in a sense created patristic opinion about dreams and visions, resulting in a set of authoritative ideas that could be used both to defend and to question reports of individual visionary experiences. This book is a major contribution to discussions about the intellectual place of dreams and visions in the early Middle Ages, and underlines the creative nature of early medieval engagement with authoritative texts.

Book excerpt: What will it take for Mankind to break out of his endless cycle of war and destruction? This cycle is repeated over and over again because of the way in which Man has chosen to view the world. In this novel, six characters with diverse backgrounds, known as The Foundation, set out to change this worldview. First, they must answer twelve of Mankind's oldest questions. Questions that Man has struggled with for centuries that have shaped his current perspective. During their quest for answers, the characters journey into prior lives and different realms of consciousness, which provides insight about their current paths as well as the evolutionary path of Mankind's group consciousness. The characters investigate the questions using all available sources and focus on the similarities of the world's religions and philosophies rather than their differences. With this perspective, the answers they develop are unique, yet consistent with enduring teachings and provide a complete, coherent view of the truth.
