Of the vastly more numerous middle - class farmers we hear nothing except in recent histories. In the Virginia tradition there are no sec ond families - except those that emigrated to North Caro 'lina. The unromantic census reports, however, remind us that in 1860 there were in the entire state only 114 persons 'who owned as many as 100 slaves, and this out of a white population of over There were, of course, some poor and even landless gentlemen, but probably not many. If all who claim descent from wealthy old Virginian families are to be believed, these 114 families were the most prolific on record.
