Book Political Pamphlets Esprios Classics

Download or read book Political Pamphlets Esprios Classics written by George Saintsbury and published by Blurb. This book was released on 1927 with total page 1134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is sometimes thought, and very often said, that political writing, after its special day is done, becomes more dead than any other kind of literature, or even journalism. I do not know whether my own judgment is perverted by the fact of a special devotion to the business, but it certainly seems to me that both the thought and the saying are mistakes. Indeed, a rough-and-ready refutation of them is supplied by the fact that, in no few cases, political pieces have entered into the generally admitted stock of the best literary things."

Book Frankenstein Third Edition

Download or read book Frankenstein Third Edition written by Mary Shelley and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D.L. Macdonald and Kathleen Scherf’s edition of Frankenstein has been widely acclaimed as an outstanding edition of the novel—for the general reader and the student as much as for the scholar. The editors use as their copy-text the original 1818 version, and detail in an appendix all of Shelley’s later revisions. They also include a range of contemporary documents that shed light on the historical context from which this unique masterpiece emerged. New to this edition is a discussion of Percy Shelley’s role in contributing to the first draft of the novel. Recent scholarship has provoked considerable interest in the degree to which Percy Shelley contributed to Mary Shelley’s original text, and this edition’s updated introduction discusses this scholarship. A new appendix also includes Lord Byron’s “A Fragment” and John William Polidori’s The Vampyre, works that are engaging in their own right and that also add further insights into the literary context of Frankenstein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic horror tale from the iconic gothic author and the inspiration for the Netflix series from the creator of The Haunting of Hill House. As The Fall of the House of Usher opens, an unnamed narrator has been summoned by his childhood friend, Roderick Usher, who has succumbed to a mysterious illness and longs for companionship. Upon first glance of the gloomy family mansion, the narrator is plunged into an unnerving depression, a dread he feels down to his bones. Once inside, he finds the years have not been kind to Roderick. Weakened in body and mind, his ghostly pallor and volatile moods are alarming. He is joined in the house by his sickly sister, who roams the halls in a trance-like state. Her death would make Roderick the last surviving member of their ancient family. It is this unnatural atmosphere that takes its toll on the Ushers and their guest, plunging them all into a storm of terror. Praise for writing of Edgar Allan Poe “The most original genius that America has produced.” —Alfred, Lord Tennyson “Poe has entered our popular consciousness as no other American writer.” —The New York Times Book Review

Book The Works of Edgar Allan Poe Volume 5

Download or read book The Works of Edgar Allan Poe Volume 5 written by Edgar Allan Poe and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-26 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About Author The works of American author Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) include many poems, short stories, and one novel. His fiction spans multiple genres, including horror fiction, adventure, science fiction, and detective fiction, a genre he is credited with inventing. These works are generally considered part of the Dark romanticism movement, a literary reaction to Transcendentalism. Poe's writing reflects his literary theories: he disagreed with didacticism[3] and allegory. Meaning in literature, he said in his criticism, should be an undercurrent just beneath the surface; works whose meanings are too obvious cease to be art. Poe pursued originality in his works, and disliked proverbs. He often included elements of popular pseudosciences such as phrenology and physiognomy. His most recurring themes deal with questions of death, including its physical signs, the effects of decomposition, concerns of premature burial, the reanimation of the dead, and mourning. Though known as a masterly practitioner of Gothic fiction, Poe did not invent the genre; he was following a long-standing popular tradition.Poe's literary career began in 1827 with the release of 50 copies of Tamerlane and Other Poems credited only to "a Bostonian", a collection of early poems that received virtually no attention. In December 1829, Poe released Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems in Baltimore before delving into short stories for the first time with "Metzengerstein" in 1832.His most successful and most widely read prose during his lifetime was "The Gold-Bug", which earned him a $100 prize, the most money he received for a single work. One of his most important works, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", was published in 1841 and is today considered the first modern detective story.Poe called it a "tale of ratiocination".Poe became a household name with the publication of "The Raven" in 1845, though it was not a financial success. The publishing industry at the time was a difficult career choice and much of Poe's work was written using themes specifically catered for mass market tastes.
