Book Violence Terror Genocide and War in the Holy Books and in the Decades Ahead New Psychological and Sociological Insights on How the Old Testament

Download or read book Violence Terror Genocide and War in the Holy Books and in the Decades Ahead New Psychological and Sociological Insights on How the Old Testament written by Timothy Philip Schwartz-Barcott and published by Teneo Press. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, dozens of books have been published about whether, and how, the "holy books" and specific passages in the "holy books" inspire, promote, and justify acts of terrorism and war. Many of the authors of these books are scholars of religion, religious leaders, journalists, and people who have a limited point of view, a particular theory to support, or a political purpose that limits their objectivity and thoroughness. Some authors contend that one or more of the holy books essentially are violent books, or that they are books of terror or books of war. Many of these authors focus on a limited number of passages that seem to them to be violent, terroristic, and bellicose. By contrast, other authors focus on a limited number of passages that seem to them to be anti-violent and pacifistic. Some of these authors contend that one or more of the holy books essentially are books of peace. A few authors compare two or more of the holy books regarding the number of violent passages. Often they do so by presenting a few dozen verses that are consistent with their particular point of view. Most authors focus on violent events in the past, and most authors do not provide very specific recommendations for reducing possible acts of "holy book violence" in the decades ahead. This book goes beyond these other books in a number of ways. In order to be as objective and as empirical as possible, it is based on four years of research that uses systematic content analysis to examine every verse in widely available versions of the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Qur'an. It reports the numbers of verses in each holy book--and their corresponding chapters--which portray or refer to acts of physical violence against humans, including acts of interpersonal violence, terror, genocide, battles, and wars. More importantly, this book examines the qualities of the violent acts that are portrayed. Who is portrayed as committing, advocating, threatening, and predicting what kinds of violence? Against whom? When? For what reasons? With what consequences? Written in an engaging and unpretentious style, the results of this most objective and systematic analysis of portrayals of violence in Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Qur'an ever undertaken are highly important if not astonishing. This book is must reading for anyone concerned with religious violence or terrorism.

  • Author : Susan Niditch
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1995-06-29

Download or read book War in the Hebrew Bible written by Susan Niditch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texts about war pervade the Hebrew Bible, raising challenging questions in religious and political ethics. The war passages that readers find most disquieting are those in which God demands the total annihilation of the enemy without regard to gender, age, or military status. The ideology of the "ban," however, is only one among a range of attitudes towards war preserved in the ancient Israelite literary tradition. Applying insights from anthropology, comparative literature, and feminist studies, Niditch considers a wide spectrum of war ideologies in the Hebrew Bible, seeking in each case to discover why and how these views might have made sense to biblical writers, who themselves can be seen to wrestle with the ethics of violence. The study of war thus also illuminates the social and cultural history of Israel, as war texts are found to map the world views of biblical writers from various periods and settings. Reviewing ways in which modern scholars have interpreted this controversial material, Niditch sheds further light on the normative assumptions that shape our understanding of ancient Israel. More widely, this work explores how human beings attempt to justify killing and violence while concentrating on the tones, textures, meanings, and messages of a particular corpus in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Book War in the Bible and Terrorism in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book War in the Bible and Terrorism in the Twenty First Century written by Richard S. Hess and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2008-06-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 2004, Denver Seminary’s annual Biblical Studies conference addressed the question of modern war and the teachings of biblical ethics regarding it. The conference was envisioned as a collaborative effort between the Association for Christian Conferences, Teaching, and Service (ACCTS), and the Biblical Studies division of Denver Seminary. A year earlier, the invasion of Iraq had taken place. The questions created by the outbreak of war prompted an urgency in the consideration of the topic. ACCTS, which sponsors international symposia in military ethics with officers from armed forces around the globe, provided ethicists and practitioners from within the military of both the U.S. and Great Britain. Hess and Martens also solicited papers from leading theologians and advocates representing pacifist and just-war views. They have succeeded in bringing together in this fine volume a group of Christians representing a wide range of perspectives to debate and discuss their heritage and biblical roots with regard to questions of war and its ethical dilemmas.

Book excerpt: "My children have been raised to have drive, a hatred of losing, and the stamina to keep pushing until they ultimately win....Like all parents, I dream of a healthy, happy life for my children." - Ivana Trump, Raising Trump"Does happiness matter in the behaviors and expressions of our leaders? I often think that our children and our society benefit greatly when our leaders convey genuine happiness in what they say and how they behave. This book convinces me that the answer is a resounding "Yes!" - Anonymous"This is not 'just another book, ' like so many other books that obviously advocate for or against Donald Trump. Here is a book that provides fascinating new ways to think about our leaders. It does so through the words and methods of a career sociologist who probably is as objective and non-partisan as a person can be. So put away your political biases as best you can. Get ready to be as open-minded as you can be." - B. HappyHere are some of the questions answered as objectively as possible in this book: - Which of the Trumps most often express happiness about themselves and about the other Trumps?- What have been the most significant sources of happiness and unhappiness to the Trumps over the last four generations? Genes? Health? Happy parents and other relatives? Experiences with friends, sex, schools, religions, marriages, parenting, and careers? Financial success and wealth? "Good luck"?- Which Presidents have expressed happiness most often and in what ways about themselves and their relatives: Reagan, Bush (#41), Clinton, Bush (#43), Obama, Trump? In their own words, what has made them happy?ABOUT THE AUTHORMy family and I have been happy enough to have our home in a very old farmhouse in rural Rhode Island for more than forty years. During those years our home and land have been home to countless critters, some of them tame, many of them rather wild. Most if not all of them have seemed happy enough in their barks, purrs, songs, scampers, slithers, and so many other natural expressions-escapes among them. As for me, I have been a research sociologist for many years (Ph.D. in sociology, The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, 1975) and I have taught courses in sociology, social psychology, and criminology as a faculty member at the University of Delaware, Brown University, the University of Connecticut, and Providence College. Five of my books have been published since 2004. These include: War, Terror & Peace in the Qur'an and in Islam: Insights for Military and Government Leaders (2004); After the Disaster: Re-creating Community and Well-Being at Buffalo Creek since the Notorious Coal-Mining Disaster in 1972 (2008); and Violence, Terror, Genocide, and War in the Holy Books and in the Decades Ahead: New Psychological and Sociological Insights on How the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Qur'an Might Influence Violence (2018).

Book Encountering Violence in the Bible

Download or read book Encountering Violence in the Bible written by Markus Zehnder and published by Sheffield Phoenix Press Limited. This book was released on 2013 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world is full of violence, with repeated acts of terrorism and generally rising rates of violent criminal acts as the most obvious forms of the phenomenon in the Western world. It even reached the peaceful shores of Norway in the summer of 2011. This was one of the reasons why the first international meeting of the Norwegian Summer Academy for Biblical Studies was devoted to the topic 'Violence as an Ethical Challenge in the Bible'. Eighteen biblical scholars from nine different countries (Joshua Berman, Lennart Bostrom, Friedmann Eissler, Torleif Elgvin, LarsOlov Eriksson, Karin Finsterbusch, Georg Fischer, Terence E. Fretheim, Hallvard Hagelia, Dana M. Harris, Robert L. Hubbard, Jr, Arstein Justnes, Gordon McConville, Kirsten Nielsen, Tommy Wasserman, Karl William Weyde, Peter Wick and Markus Zehnder) met on the beautiful premises of Ansgar Theological Seminary to discuss some of the most fundamental aspects of the topic. The papers presented at the conference are collected in the present volume, dealing mostly with the Hebrew Bible, but covering also the New Testament, Jewish literature from the Second Temple period and the Qur'an. The contributions reflect a refreshing variety of scholarly and theological approaches. One of the fundamental questions addressed in several studies is how biblical texts justifying violence can be properly understood and used today. Other questions raised are how violent some of the often-criticized biblical passages really are and how violence can be overcome.

Book The Psychology of Genocide Massacres and Extreme Violence

Download or read book The Psychology of Genocide Massacres and Extreme Violence written by Donald G. Dutton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-05-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicling horrific events that brought the 20th century to witness the largest number of systematic slaughters of human beings in any century across history, this work goes beyond historic details and examines contemporary psychological means that leaders use to convince individuals to commit horrific acts in the name of a politial or military cause. Massacres in Nanking, Rwanda, El Salvador, Vietnam, and other countries are reviewed in chilling detail. But the core issue is what psychological forces are behind large- scale killing; what psychology can be used to indoctrinate normal people with a Groupthink that moves individuals to mass murder brutally and without regret, even when the victims are innocent children. Dutton shows us how individuals are convinced to commit such sadistic acts, often preceded by torture, after being indoctrinated with beliefs that the target victims are unjust, inhuman or viral, like a virus that must be destroyed or it will destroy society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enquiry into the social science of remembrance and forgiveness in global episodes of genocide and mass violence during the post-Holocaust era, this volume explores the ways in which remembrance and forgiveness have changed over time and how they have been used in more recent cases of genocide and mass violence. With case studies from Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, South Africa, Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Israel, Palestine, Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvador, the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Chechnya, the volume avoids a purely legal perspective to open the interpretation of post-genocidal societies, communities, and individuals to global and interdisciplinary perspectives that consider not only forgiveness and thus social harmony, but remembrance and disharmony. This volume will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in memory studies, genocide, remembrance, and forgiveness.

Book Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God

Download or read book Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God written by Brian Zahnd and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Brian Zahnd began "to question the theology of a wrathful God who delights in punishing sinners, and has started to explore the real nature of Jesus and His Father. The book isn’t only an interesting look at the context of some modern theological ideas; it’s also offers some profound insight into God’s love and eternal plan." —Relevant Magazine (Named one of the Top 10 Books of 2017) God is wrath? Or God is Love? In his famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Puritan revivalist Jonathan Edwards shaped predominating American theology with a vision of God as angry, violent, and retributive. Three centuries later, Brian Zahnd was both mesmerized and terrified by Edwards’s wrathful God. Haunted by fear that crippled his relationship with God, Zahnd spent years praying for a divine experience of hell. What Zahnd experienced instead was the Father’s love—revealed perfectly through Jesus Christ—for all prodigal sons and daughters. In Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Zahnd asks important questions like: Is seeing God primarily as wrathful towards sinners true or biblical? Is fearing God a normal expected behavior? And where might the natural implications of this theological framework lead us? Thoughtfully wrestling with subjects like Old Testament genocide, the crucifixion of Jesus, eternal punishment in hell, and the final judgment in Revelation, Zanhd maintains that the summit of divine revelation for sinners is not God is wrath, but God is love.
