Book excerpt: Newport, Rhode Island, blessed with stunning ocean vistas and constant sea breezes, is home to some of the most exceptional private residences in America. Its deeply rooted history makes it a perennial destination, with more than 3.5 million visitors each year. Although it is one of the most high profile towns in the country, Newport is also one of the most cloistered. Private Newport: At Home and in the Garden offers an invitation to venture beyond the privet hedges and massive iron gates. It is the first book to step inside the privately owned mansions to reveal a diverse collection of architectural jewels complemented by spectacular gardens. These homes, created by distinguished architects and landscape designers, are stunning examples of Newport's 375-year "old-world" heritage. Eighteen exquisite and unique homes are prominently featured-from the resilient crescent curve of majestic Seafair, which withstood the Hurricane of '38, to the prizewinning Japanese garden at Wildacre, to the nostalgic working farm of heritage breeds at Swiss Village-each contributing its own part to the "Eden of America."

Book Chateau Sur Mer A Child s View of Life at the Famous Newport Mansion

Download or read book Chateau Sur Mer A Child s View of Life at the Famous Newport Mansion written by Kathleen Kennedy Wood and published by Bookstand Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surrounded by mansions, beautiful beaches, and The Tennis Hall of Fame, I drew the inspiration for this book. Many years ago, I fell deeply in love with Newport, Rhode Island, the city by the sea. As a child, I was taken in by a family member who resided at one of the many beautiful estates, Chateau sur Mer - an estate located along the infamous Bellevue Avenue. The structure maintains its original name today, which translated means, "Castle by the Sea" and is one of the many, stunning homes now owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County and open for public visitation as a museum. My uncle, James B. Hook, was the chauffeur at Chateau sur Mer for 45 years for the Wetmore family. During my time with he and his family, I was exposed to a unique subculture of American history. My fascination with Newport grew as I learned about the area; its history, culture and inhabitants. The castle, or mansion, boasting 17 manicured acres and many interior rooms, required a large staff to maintain the property. Most of the staff were foreign-born; however, my uncle was one of the fortunate few who were native to New England. It was at this castle that I spent every summer for the first 17 years of my life and developed my life-long attachment to Newport.

Book A Newport Summer

  • Author : Ruthie Sommers
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2022-05-10
  • ISBN : 9780865653962
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book A Newport Summer written by Ruthie Sommers and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate love letter to summertime in Newport from photographer Nick Mele, the "modern-day Slim Aarons," and interior designer Ruthie Sommers Newport, Rhode Island, is one of the last bastions of American high society. The grand Gilded Age houses that top its oceanside cliffs and line storied Bellevue Avenue are largely untouched by contemporary renovation and taste, and family heirlooms are passed down from generation to generation with Yankee thrift. Indeed, Newport has an understated elegance that sets it apart from other resort towns. Life behind the facades of these elaborate mansions is rarely revealed, but now, photographer Nick Mele and author Ruthie Sommers, both Iifelong Newport residents, share their entrée into the parties, lawn tennis matches, beach clambakes, and family gatherings that make up the glorious days of a Newport summer. Picture the foggy mornings of June, the traditional yacht races of July, the annual meeting of old friends at Marble House in August, and the melancholy close of the season after Labor Day. Through Sommers's personal, evocative text and Mele's exquisite photographs of people, parties, beaches, and houses, the intimate charms of A Newport Summer come poignantly to life.

Book 1878 Map of Newport Rhode Island

Download or read book 1878 Map of Newport Rhode Island written by Poetose Press and published by Poetose Notebooks. This book was released on 2019-10-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover of this beautiful 4" x 6" 50-page notebook features a lovely, colorful bird's eye view map of Newport, Rhode Island. Here is some of the theory behind the beauty and potential of a blank page: "A person can get lost trying to find a home in herself--but then you simply begin to go on as one must go on, and maybe you say a little something to yourself every once in a while just to practice being with words, meeting silence, meeting yourself again, and maybe you frequent empty rooms to familiarize yourself with the meaning of space as in a blank page, and yourself in it, and maybe you scribble like this will help you come home to yourself, but eventually you fit things together, and what made no sense finds its way into something plausible by virtue of its sheer existence." Book Seeing Sideways

Download or read book Seeing Sideways written by Kristin Hersh and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doony, Ryder, Wyatt, Bodhi. The names of Kristin Hersh’s sons are the only ones included in her new memoir, Seeing Sideways. As the book unfolds and her sons’ voices rise from its pages, it becomes clear why: these names tell the story of her life. This story begins in 1990, when Hersh is the leader of the indie rock group Throwing Muses, touring steadily, and the mother of a young son, Doony. The chapters that follow reveal a woman and mother whose life and career grow and change with each of her sons: the story of a custody battle for Doony is told alongside that of Hersh’s struggles with her record company and the resulting PTSD; the tale of breaking free from her record label stands in counterpoint to her recounting of her pregnancy with Ryder; a period of writer’s block coincides with the development of Wyatt as an artist and the family’s loss of their home; and finally, soon after Bodhi’s arrival, Hersh and her boys face crises from which only strange angels can save them. Punctuated with her own song lyrics, Seeing Sideways is a memoir about a life strange enough to be fiction, but so raw and moving that it can only be real.

Book Theophilus North

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thornton Wilder
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2019-04-09
  • ISBN : 0062943367
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Theophilus North written by Thornton Wilder and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extremely entertaining array of American life in a bygone era.” — New Yorker The last of Thornton Wilder’s works published during his lifetime, Theophilus North is part autobiographical and part the imagined adventures of Wilder’s twin brother who died at birth. This edition features an updated afterword from Wilder’s nephew, Tappan Wilder, with illuminating material about the novelist, story and setting. Setting out to see the world in the summer of 1926, Theophilus North gets as far as Newport, Rhode Island, before his car breaks down. To support himself, Theophilus takes jobs in the elegant mansions along Ocean Drive, just as Wilder himself did in the same decade. Soon the young man finds himself playing the roles of tutor, tennis coach, spy, confidant, lover, friend and enemy as he becomes entangled in adventure and intrigue in Newport’s fabulous addresses, as well as in its local boarding houses, restaurants, dives and military barracks. Narrated by the elderly North from a distance of fifty years, Theophilus North is a fascinating commentary on youth and education from the vantage point of age, and deftly displays Wilder’s trademark wit juxtaposed with his lively and timeless ruminations on what really matters, at the end of the day, about life, love, and work.
