VILLL FAMILY The name of Viele is first found in the Albany records in the year 1659. There seems to have been no Vieles in New Amsterdam until 1688. In 1659 the name of Aerhnout Cornelisen Viele appears in the Albany record, and two other Vieles, apparently his brothers, Cornelis Cornelisen and Pieter Cornelisen Viele, took up lands in Schenectady, --Cornelis in 1688 and Pieter in 1670. The fact that these bear the name of Cornelisen shows that they were all three sons of a Cornelis. It seems probable of a Cornelis who never came to this country. There were indeed other settlers with that combination of names. In 1644 a Cornelis Cornelisen from Utrecht, age 22, was witness to the burning of a barn in Harlem, and in 1645 in New York is recorded the marriage of a Cornelis Cornelisen j. m. en Aeltje Colet wed; but although both records may refer to the same man it is difficult to point to any circumstance that shows that either referred to a Viele. Pearson's Early Settlers of Schenectady gives Aerhnout Cornelisen as the son of Cornelis Cornelisen, brother of Pieter Cornelisen, but as Aerhnout is a grandfather apparently before the children of either Cornelis or Pieter are married it would appear absurd to place him in a generation after them. Pearson did wonderfully well in his genealogies, but it was impossible for him not to have occasionally erred, and while his indications are all valuable his deductions cannot always be followed. On the Court Minutes of Albany County in the year 1686 is recorded a complaint against Bennony Arentse v. Hoak, who married Jacomintje Swart, widow of Pieter Cornelisen Viele. This complaint, as it includes mention of all three of the early Vieles, -- Aerhnout, Cornelis, and Pieter, --is the onl

Book excerpt: Between 1817 and 1898, New York City evolved from a vital Atlantic port of trade to the center of American commerce and culture. With this rapid commercial growth and cultural development, New York came to epitomize a nineteenth-century metropolis. Although this important urban transformation is well documented, the critical role of select Union soldiers turned New York engineers has, until now, remained largely unexplored. In Designing Gotham, Jon Scott Logel examines the fascinating careers of George S. Greene, Egbert L. Viele, John Newton, Henry Warner Slocum, and Fitz John Porter, all of whom studied engineering at West Point, served in the United States Army during the Civil War, and later advanced their civilian careers and status through the creation of Victorian New York. These influential cadets trained at West Point in the nation’s first engineering school, a program designed by Sylvanus Thayer and Dennis Hart Mahan that would shape civil engineering in New York and beyond. After the war, these industrious professionals leveraged their education and military experience to wield significant influence during New York’s social, economic, and political transformation. Logel examines how each engineer’s Civil War service shaped his contributions to postwar activities in the city, including the construction of the Croton Aqueduct, the creation of Central Park, and the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. Logel also delves into the administration of New York’s municipal departments, in which Military Academy alumni interacted with New York elites, politicians, and civilian-trained engineers. Examining the West Pointers’ experiences—as cadets, military officers during the war, and New Yorkers—Logel assesses how these men impacted the growing metropolis, the rise of professionalization, and the advent of Progressivism at the end of the century.
