Elle s'inscrit dans le tournant des XVIe et XVIIe siècles, qui n'est pas seulement une période traversée par les conflits religieux - la Contre-Réforme catholique succédant à la Réforme protestante - mais aussi un grand temps de renouveau mystique et spirituel. Dans ce contexte, Madame Acarie, laïque mariée, joue un rôle primordial pour introduire en France le Carmel réformé par sainte Thérèse d'Avila, avec l'aide de Pierre de Bérulle (1604). Elle exprime, à travers son itinéraire, la richesse et l'influence réciproque des recherches spirituelles qui s'expriment alors. Devenue veuve en 1613, elle entre en 1614 au carmel d'Amiens, puis, en 1616, au carmel de Pontoise où elle finit ses jours. Soeur Marie de l'Incarnation est béatifiée en 1791 par le pape Pie VI. Bernard Sesé, professeur émérite des universités, est l'auteur de plusieurs biographies de grandes figures religieuses parmi lesquelles Augustin d'Hippone, Thérèse d'Avila, Edith Stein, Jean de la Croix.
