Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, boats have not only been utilized to move cargo from one port to another, but also to change the trajectory of the lives of oppressed people escaping to freedom. In a historical examination of the early beginnings of America and its efforts to establish a more perfect union, Dr. Howard Weems intertwines biblical principles with Ellen G. White’s prophetic perspectives while providing thought-provoking insight regarding five legendary boats: Noah’s Ark, Peter’s fishing boat, the Mayflower, the Desire, and the Morning Star. Dr. Weems relies on the history behind each of the vessels that played a pivotal role in God’s providential discourse to chronicle and explain the root cause of the development of oppression and the passing of laws that perpetuated it, and share a sweeping overview of those who value free will, explore the endurance of democracy, and examine the fragility of the United States Constitution. Vessels That Enabled examines the history of five legendary boats while offering new perspectives on freedom, liberty, justice, and whether democracy can survive in the future.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Download or read book The Real Cruel Sea written by Richard Woodman and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned maritime historian’s compelling study of the vital role played by merchant seamen during WWII in the Battle of the Atlantic. For the British, the Battle of the Atlantic was a fight for survival. They depended on the safe transit of hundreds of merchant ships carrying food and supplies from America to feed the country and keep the war effort going. On top of that, they had to export manufactured goods to pay for it all. Britain's merchant navy, a disparate collection of private vessels, had become the country's lifeline. While its seamen were officially non-combatants, they bravely endured the onslaught of the German U-boat offensive until Allied superiority overwhelmed the enemy. Drawing extensively on first-hand sources, Richard Woodman establishes the importance of the British and Allied merchant fleets in the struggle against Germany. This important study elevates the heroic seamen who manned these ships to their rightful place in the history of the Second World War.

Book Conflict in the Early Americas

Download or read book Conflict in the Early Americas written by Rebecca M. Seaman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed study is the only reference work of its kind to address Spain's conquest of Central and South America, providing in-depth coverage of native and European ideologies, political motivations, and cultural practices of the region. As the study of world history evolves from a Eurocentric perspective to a more global viewpoint, formerly marginalized groups are now the focus of discussion, revealing a background rich with important military, political, social, and economic achievements. This book examines the once prosperous and powerful native civilizations in Central and South America, discussing the key individuals, strategies, and politics that made these countries strong and indomitable. In spite of this, the author shows how, in only a few generations, Spain defeated these mini-empires, eventually dominating much of the Western Hemisphere. Conflict in the Early Americas: An Encyclopedia of the Spanish Empire's Aztec, Incan, and Mayan Conquests focuses primarily on the defeat of the Aztec, Incan, and Mayan civilizations, but also includes Spanish interactions with lesser-known native groups. Supporting documents including primary sources, maps, and visual aids provide necessary context to this once-untold story.

Book Engineered Cell Manipulation for Biomedical Application

Download or read book Engineered Cell Manipulation for Biomedical Application written by Misturu Akashi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to summarize new technologies for engineered cell manipulation. The contents focus on control of cellular functions by nanomaterials and control of three-dimensional cell–cell interactions. Control of cellular functions is important for cell differentiation, maturation, and activation, which generally are controlled by the addition of soluble cytokines or growth factors into cell culture dishes. Target antigen molecules can be efficiently delivered to the cytosol of the dendritic cells using the nanoparticle technique described here, and cellular functions such as dendritic cell maturation can be controlled easily and with precision. This book describes basic preparation of the nanoparticles, activation control of dendritic cells, immune function control, and in vivo application for various vaccination systems. The second type of control, that of cell–cell interaction, is important for tissue engineering in order to develop three-dimensional cellular constructs. To achieve in vitro engineering of three-dimensional human tissue constructs, cell–cell interaction must be controlled in three dimensions, but typical biological cell manipulation technique cannot accomplish this task. An engineered cell manipulation technique is necessary. In this book the authors describe the fabrication of nanofilms onto cell surfaces, development of three-dimensional cellular multilayers, and various applications of the cellular multilayers as three-dimensional human models. This important work will be highly informative for researchers and students in the fields of materials science, polymer science, biomaterials, medicinal science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and biology.
