Book excerpt: Scott Haas: These poems show talent and vigor. Both through observation of political occurrences as well as by introspection, Brinda Rao-Pothuraju pairs idealism with deft use of language. And more than youthful passion and vitality, she demonstrates an inchoate sense of belonging—her restless intellect demonstrates her accurate sense that what she sees and hears require her involvement as an observer who can tell others what she senses. This is a lovely collection of poems. Scott Haas is a writer and clinical psychologist based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He is the author of “Hearing Voices: Reflections of a Psychology Intern” (Dutton), “Are We There Yet?” (Plume), “Back of the House” (Berkley/Penguin), and “Those Immigrants!” (Fingerprint!/Prakesh). He is the co-author of “Da Silvano” (Bloomsbury). He won a James Beard award for his on-air broadcasts on “Here and Now,” a nationally syndicated show National Public Radio. . Jennifer Darger: Brinda is a gifted writer and a profound thinker. Her choice of words paints a vivid image of emotion and place. Her verses help her readers to view life with more sensitive eyes. “His shoes were nets, catching ambition.” She brings her reader not just to her profound observations but awakens a sense of discovery that exposes untapped wisdom. Reading Brinda’s writings inspired in me a desire to be a more observant sojourner. As Brinda writes of one of her subjects, she, too, is able to “gargle words and spit out art.” Jennifer practices tort law in New York City and is President of the Board of Education, Edgemont Free Union School District in Scarsdale NY

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I think I could be a good woman if I had five thousand a year.' Becky Sharp is sharp, calculating, and determined to succeed. Craving wealth and a position in society, she charms, hoodwinks, manipulates everyone she meets, rising in the world as she attaches herself to a succession of rich men. Becky's fortunes are contrasted with those of her best friend Amelia, who has none of Becky's wit and vitality but whose gentle-heartedness attracts the devotion of the loyal Dobbin. Set during the Napoleonic wars, Vanity Fair follows Becky as she cuts a swathe through Regency society. Thackeray paints a panoramic portrait of the age, with war, money and national identity his great subjects. The battle for social success is as fierce as the battle of Waterloo, and its casualties as stricken. The satire is at once biting and profound, sparing none in a clear-eyed exposure of a world on the make. Thackeray's scepticism of human motives borders on cynicism yet Vanity Fair is among the funniest novels of the Victorian age. This new edition includes all Thackeray's original illustrations. Book excerpt: Step into the glittering and deceitful world of early 19th-century English society in this sprawling novel. Following the lives of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley, the two women navigate their way through a society obsessed with wealth, status, and social climbing. Becky, ambitious and resourceful, stops at nothing to ascend the social ladder, while Amelia, gentle and naive, grapples with love and loss amid the tumult of the Napoleonic Wars. William Thackeray's sharp wit and keen observations lay bare the hypocrisies and moral ambiguities of his characters, from aristocrats to scheming social climbers. Set against the backdrop of historical events, Vanity Fair offers a panoramic view of London's high society during an era fraught with conflict. WILLIAM THACKERAY [1811-1863] was one of Victorian England’s most prominent authors. Among his most famous works are Vanity Fair [1847-1848] and The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq. [1844].

Book excerpt: Written in 1848, Vanity Fair is an excellent satire of English society in the early 19th Century. Thackeray states several times that it is a novel "without a hero", and at a couple of points tries to claim that Amelia, a good person but who inevitably comes across as rather wishy-washy, is the heroine. Thackeray apparently saw people as "abominably selfish and foolish", and this negative view comes across loud and clear with his use of vicious vocabulary, and his unremittingly dark portrayal of human nature. The author's voice is continually present, and his wry observations do contribute to making the novel vastly entertaining. They were also intended to make it instructive to his readers.

After leaving school, Becky stays with Emmy, who is a good-natured, simple-minded, young girl, of a wealthy London family. There, Becky meets the dashing and self-obsessed Captain George Osborne (Amelia's betrothed) and Amelia's brother Joseph Sedley, a clumsy and vainglorious but rich civil servant home from the East India Company.
