Download or read book Memoirs of My Services in the World War 1917 1918 written by George Catlett Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George C. Marshall was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. He drafted this manuscript while he was in Washington, D.C., between 1919 and 1924 as aide-de-camp to General of the Armies John J. Pershing. However, given the growing bitterness of the "memoirs wars" of the period he decided against publication, and the draft sat unused until the 1970s when Marshall's step-daughter and her husband decided to publish it.

Download or read book Toxic Communities written by Dorceta E. Taylor and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From St. Louis to New Orleans, from Baltimore to Oklahoma City, there are poor and minority neighborhoods so beset by pollution that just living in them can be hazardous to your health. Due to entrenched segregation, zoning ordinances that privilege wealthier communities, or because businesses have found the OCypaths of least resistance, OCO there are many hazardous waste and toxic facilities in these communities, leading residents to experience health and wellness problems on top of the race and class discrimination most already experience. Taking stock of the recent environmental justice scholarship, a Toxic Communities aexamines the connections among residential segregation, zoning, and exposure to environmental hazards. Renowned environmental sociologist Dorceta Taylor focuses on the locations of hazardous facilities in low-income and minority communities and shows how they have been dumped on, contaminated and exposed. Drawing on an array of historical and contemporary case studies from across the country, Taylor explores controversies over racially-motivated decisions in zoning laws, eminent domain, government regulation (or lack thereof), and urban renewal. She provides a comprehensive overview of the debate over whether or not there is a link between environmental transgressions and discrimination, drawing a clear picture of the state of the environmental justice field today and where it is going. In doing so, she introduces new concepts and theories for understanding environmental racism that will be essential for environmental justice scholars. A fascinating landmark study, a Toxic Communities agreatly contributes to the study of race, the environment, and space in the contemporary United States."

Download or read book Roxy Music written by Jonathan Rigby and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roxy Music’s ambitious and sophisticated art rock built them a following far beyond the glam constituency from which they sprang. Almost embarrassed by an excess of talent, the original 1972 line-up was not only fronted by glam-rock icon Bryan Ferry but also included multifaceted genius Brian Eno, multi-instrumentalist Andrew MacKay, and killer guitarist Phil Manzanera. Subsequent shuffles of personnel and changes in musical direction are acutely documented in Jonathan Rigby’s groundbreaking analysis of the band’s prolific output. Complete with coverage of each band member's amazing solo work, a song-by-song analysis of everything from Virginia Plain to Avalon including album tracks, singles, and B-sides, exhaustive coverage of all the band’s live performances from 1972 to 2007, and news of the long-awaited new album, this book will appeal to new fans and decades-long Roxy Music aficionados alike.
