Book excerpt: Utah is a peculiar place, and Utahns are a peculiar people. Men overwhelming dominate Utah business and politics. But it was also the first state in the nation where women cast a vote and is home to the nation’s first female state senator (who had to defeat her husband in order to get there). Utah today has the highest level of foreign language fluency with international trade a key driver of the state’s economic development. Utahns overwhelmingly believe in limited government and reduced public spending. However, from its initial founding, Utah also has a proud history of supporting the arts, through both public and private efforts. When Utah was first established by Latter-day Saint pioneers, its settlers chose a place where they could be completely isolated from the rest of the nation. Within that isolation, it makes sense that the political culture could turn out to be, well, a little bit quirky.

Book Religion Politics and Sugar

Download or read book Religion Politics and Sugar written by Matthew Godfrey and published by Life Writings Frontier Women. This book was released on 2007-03-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Lois Walker Morris was a Mormon woman who challenged both American ideas about marriage and the U.S. legal system. Before the Manifesto provides a glimpse into her world as the polygamous wife of a prominent Salt Lake City businessman, during a time of great transition in Utah. This account of her life as a convert, milliner, active community member, mother, and wife begins in England, where her family joined the Mormon church, details her journey across the plains, and describes life in Utah in the 1880s. Her experiences were unusual as, following her first husband's deathbed request, she married his brother as a plural wife in the Old Testament tradition of levirate marriage. Mary Morris's memoir frames her 1879 to 1887 diary with both reflections on earlier years and passages that parallel entries in the day book, giving readers a better understanding of how she retrospectively saw her life. The thoroughly annotated diary offers the daily experience of a woman who kept a largely self-sufficient household, had a wide social network, ran her own business, wrote poetry, and was intellectually curious. The years of "the Raid" (federal prosecution of polygamists) led Mary and Elias Morris to hide their marriage on "the underground," and her to perjury during Elias's trial for unlawful cohabitation. The book ends with Mary Lois's arrival at the Salt Lake Depot after three years in exile in Mexico with a polygamist colony.

Book excerpt: As is well known, the state of Utah was created under trying circumstances. Settled by religious refugees, the territory was at first governed by a people who resented the intrusion of the United States and who recognized no wall dividing church and state. This is the legacy that the contemporary state has inherited. As subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) as the influences of the past can be, the overall impact of religion in Utah from the founding period to the present has been enormous. In this anthology, fourteen prominent men and women, whose diverse backgrounds in politics, history, and religion more than qualify them as experts, attest to this fact. Each interprets the state of religion and politics with a clear, informed perspective, with reassurances and warnings. As the editor notes, there is an element of endearment in the tone of these essays; they are written by people who live in the state and clearly love her and care about the overall health and well being of her citizens.

Download or read book The Utah State Constitution written by Jean Bickmore White and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2011 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Utah State Constitution, Jean Bickmore White offers a comprehensive review of the unique historical background and the 100-year development of the Utah State Constitution. First drafted in 1896, at the beginning of Utah's statehood, the original constitution survived until the early 1970s with little change. Since that time there has been a wave of constitutional reform that has produced change in virtually every article. This reference guide shows these changes section-by-section and explores their purpose and meaning. This book will be of interest to readers seeking information about the law, politics, and history of Utah. Previously published by Greenwood, this title has been brought back in to circulation by Oxford University Press with new verve. Re-printed with standardization of content organization in order to facilitate research across the series, this title, as with all titles in the series, is set to join the dynamic revision cycle of The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States. The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States is an important series that reflects a renewed international interest in constitutional history and provides expert insight into each of the 50 state constitutions. Each volume in this innovative series contains a historical overview of the state's constitutional development, a section-by-section analysis of its current constitution, and a comprehensive guide to further research. Under the expert editorship of Professor G. Alan Tarr, Director of the Center on State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University, this series provides essential reference tools for understanding state constitutional law. Books in the series can be purchased individually or as part of a complete set, giving readers unmatched access to these important political documents.

Book Utah in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Utah in the Twentieth Century written by Brian Q. Cannon and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth could easily be Utah’s most interesting, complex century, yet popular ideas of what is history seem mired in the nineteenth. One reason may be the lack of readily available writing on more recent Utah history. This collection of essays shifts historical focus forward to the twentieth, which began and ended with questions of Utah’s fit with the rest of the nation. In between was an extended period of getting acquainted in an uneasy but necessary marriage, which was complicated by the push of economic development and pull of traditional culture, demand for natural resources from a fragile and scenic environment, and questions of who governs and how, who gets a vote, and who controls what is done on and to the contested public lands. Outside trade and a tourist economy increasingly challenged and fed an insular society. Activists left and right declaimed constitutional liberties while Utah’s Native Americans become the last enfranchised in the nation. Proud contributions to national wars contrasted with denial of deep dependence on federal money; the skepticism of provocative writers, with boosters eager for growth; and reflexive patriotism somehow bonded to ingrained distrust of federal government.
