Book Use of Magnetic Tomography Technology to Evaluate Dowel Placement

Download or read book Use of Magnetic Tomography Technology to Evaluate Dowel Placement written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive laboratory and field evaluations were conducted under this project to evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of the MIT Scan-2 device, which uses magnetic tomography technology to evaluate the placement of metal dowel bars in concrete pavements. The principal limitation of MIT Scan-2 is that the presence of other metal objects near the measurement region can introduce significant errors, effectively invalidating the results.

Book Use of Magnetic Tomography Technology to Evaluate Dowel Bar Placement

Download or read book Use of Magnetic Tomography Technology to Evaluate Dowel Bar Placement written by United States. Federal Highway Administration and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical brief describes a project to evaluate the effectiveness and limitation of MIT Scan-2. The use of properly sized dowel bars has been a long-standing recommendation for jointed concrete pavements subject to heavy truck traffic to prevent roughness caused by faulting. Implicit in this recommendation is the assumption that the dowel bars will be placed in proper position and alignment. Misaligned dowel bars can cause joints to lock, which, in turn, can lead to spalling or cracking. Severe misalignment can also cause looseness around the dowel bars, greatly reducing their effectiveness. Proper centering of the dowel bars under the joint is important to provide adequate embedment length on either side of the joint. The full report is available as FHWA-IF-06-006.

Book Field Demonstration of Magnetic Tomography Technology for Determination of Dowel Bar Position in Concrete Pavement

Download or read book Field Demonstration of Magnetic Tomography Technology for Determination of Dowel Bar Position in Concrete Pavement written by M. Shabbir Hossain and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate and evaluate the use of magnetic tomography technology through the use of Magnetic Imaging Tools' (MIT) MIT Scan-2. The main objective was to measure the alignment of dowel bars in a few jointed plain concrete pavements in Virginia and demonstrate the applicability of the technology. The MIT Scan-2 was obtained on loan from the Concrete Pavement Technology Program. This program is managed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) through a partnership with state highway agencies, industry, and academia. Dowel alignment measurements were successfully performed on both mechanically inserted dowel bars and bars on dowel baskets. Although the verification with field coring showed reasonably accurate measurements, signal interference from uncut dowel baskets, the presence of foreign metal in nearby locations, and bars deeper than 8 in can result in unreliable quantitative results. The repeatability of the measurements for bars on dowel baskets showed general agreement with the data reported from FHWA. The device was found to be user-friendly, and its field operation was simple. Thus, there is a potential benefit from using the MIT Scan-2 as a quality assurance tool for detecting dowel bar misalignment in jointed plain concrete pavement in Virginia.

Book Evaluation of Dowel Bar Inserter Practices in PCC Pavements with Magnetic Tomography Technology

Download or read book Evaluation of Dowel Bar Inserter Practices in PCC Pavements with Magnetic Tomography Technology written by Farshad Fallah and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dowel Bar Inserters (DBI) are automated mechanical equipment that position dowel bars in Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) after concrete is placed. Compared to the alternative approach, which is using dowel baskets, DBIs offer advantages in cost and the speed of construction. However, as dowel bars are not anchored to the subgrade similar to dowel baskets, there is a concern about the quality of dowel placement using this equipment. Improper placement of dowel bars can lead to reduced load transfer between slabs, which results in pavement distresses such as faulting and spalling at joints. To determine the accuracy of dowel placement by DBI, the Nebraska Department of Roads has used an MIT Scan-2 device to scan the joints in projects where a DBI was used. This device uses a nondestructive magnetic imaging technique to capture the position of dowel bars inside the pavement. The aim of this project is to analyze the MIT Scan-2 data of the joints constructed using a DBI, and to compare them with the corresponding field performance data. This will allow us to judge if DBU is a reliable alternative for dowel placement, and to improve Nebraska's current specifications for dowel placement tolerances (page viii).--

Book excerpt: The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) constructs portland cement concrete pavements (PCCP) for new highway expansions and/or for replacement of existing highway pavement using slip-form paving operations. Typical concrete pavement construction in Kansas requires reinforcing steel across the joints. Correct placement of reinforcing steel in the PCCP is critical for good performance and long life of highways. However, once immersed in the concrete paste, steel placement is difficult to measure with nondestructive methods. Sometimes the steel bars are inserted (placed) using automated equipment. If the insertion process isn't accurate, such that the steel bars are mislocated, costly remedial action can be required. Timely detection of misplaced steel would provide feedback needed to correct the construction process. To address this need, KDOT developed a field instrument capable of non-destructively assessing the placement (depth and orientation) accuracy of reinforcing steel in PCC pavement using magnetic tomography technology with real time feedback. Several iterations of prototype carts were developed. The final prototype cart developed and constructed used two sensors to determine the steel location. The long-term direction for this research project was to develop an instrument capable of efficiently assessing the real-time placement accuracy of reinforcing steel in slip-form PCCP paving operations. However, the project was discontinued when the sensor supplier's modified sensor boards weren’t reliable, their customer service was less than desired, and no alternate sensor suppliers were available.

Download or read book Guidelines for Dowel Alignment in Concrete Pavements written by Lev Khazanovich and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 2009 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents proposed guidelines for dowel alignment in concrete pavements. These guidelines deal with the effects of dowel misalignment on performance and the measures for reducing misalignment and its adverse effect. The report will guide pavement and construction engineers in considering dowel misalignment in pavement design and identifying measures for reducing misalignment during construction or for dealing with misaligned dowels. The information contained in the report will be of immediate interest to state engineers and others concerned with concrete pavement design and construction.
