Download or read book Transformational Change Efforts Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning written by Wendy M. Smith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to help launch institutional transformations in mathematics departments to improve student success. We report findings from the Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning (SEMINAL) study. SEMINAL's purpose is to help change agents, those looking to (or currently attempting to) enact change within mathematics departments and beyond—trying to reform the instruction of their lower division mathematics courses in order to promote high achievement for all students. SEMINAL specifically studies the change mechanisms that allow postsecondary institutions to incorporate and sustain active learning in Precalculus to Calculus 2 learning environments. Out of the approximately 2.5 million students enrolled in collegiate mathematics courses each year, over 90% are enrolled in Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses. Forty-four percent of mathematics departments think active learning mathematics strategies are important for Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses, but only 15 percnt state that they are very successful at implementing them. Therefore, insights into the following research question will help with institutional transformations: What conditions, strategies, interventions and actions at the departmental and classroom levels contribute to the initiation, implementation, and institutional sustainability of active learning in the undergraduate calculus sequence (Precalculus to Calculus 2) across varied institutions?

Download or read book Calculus for Everyone written by Mitch Stokes and published by . This book was released on 2020-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for only two kinds of people: those who are interested in science and math, and those who aren't. And so, motivated by this powerful idea, Calculus for Everyone presents the mathematics of change in an extremely effective way for anyone with a first-year course in algebra. Yet it does so without dumbing calculus down. In fact, Calculus for Everyone is not only for students who would have never dreamt of taking calculus, it is also for those who have already taken a standard calculus course, as well as for those who will go on to take such a course Based on more than a decade of classroom experience, this book provides mastery of calculus's core by focusing on the foundational concepts of limits, derivatives, and integrals, explaining how all three are united in the fundamental theorem of calculus. Moreover, Calculus for Everyone explains how the story of calculus is central to Western culture, from Plato in ancient Greece, to today's modern physics. Indeed, this book explains why calculus is needed at all-and why it is needed so badly. By mastering the core of calculus-as well as seeing its meaning and significance-students will not only better understand math and science in general, but contemporary culture and their place in it.
Download or read book The Mathematical Tourist written by Ivars Peterson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1998-04-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of The Mathematical Tourist, renowned science journalist Ivars Peterson took readers on an unforgettable tour through the sometimes bizarre, but always fascinating, landscape of modern mathematics. Now the journey continues in a new, updated edition that includes all the latest information on mathematical proofs, fractals, prime numbers, and chaos, as well as new material on * the relationship between mathematical knots and DNA * how computers based on quantum logic can significantly speed up the factoring of large composite numbers * the relationship between four-dimensional geometry and physical theories of the nature of matter * the application of cellular automata models to social questions and the peregrinations of virtual ants * a novel mathematical model of quasicrystals based on decagon-shaped tiles Blazing a trail through rows of austere symbols and dense lines of formulae, Peterson explores the central ideas behind the work of professional mathematicians-- how and where their pieces of the mathematical puzzle fit in, the sources of their ideas, their fountains of inspiration, and the images that carry them from one discovery to another.

Book excerpt: "Catalyzing Change in Middle School Mathematics calls for all stakeholders involved in the teaching of mathematics to middle school students to critically examine the following: The identity and agency of students in middle school by being developmentally responsive while also creating and supporting a learning environment that takes into account each and every student's unique background, experience, cultural perspectives, traditions, and knowledge The inequitable structures in middle school mathematics, such as student tracking and ability grouping as well as teacher tracking, and eliminating those structures that impede students' agency and identity as capable learners and doers of mathematics Mathematics instructional practices that are equitable and attend to students as developing young adolescents, ensuring that each and every student has access to a high-quality mathematics program. How middle schools should build from a strong foundation of mathematics developed in the elementary grades, deeply engage students in the important mathematical ideas of the middle grades, and prepare students for their continued mathematics journey in high school and beyond"--

Book excerpt: Praise for the previous edition: “…ample information for reports.”—School Library Journal From 700 BCE to 1300 CE, thousands of scholars from many civilizations introduced mathematical ideas that established the foundations of arithmetic, number theory, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, as well as the related sciences of astronomy and physics. Although we know very little about specific individuals who made important mathematical discoveries in Babylonia, Egypt, and China, historians in Arabia, ancient Greece, India, and medieval Italy preserved a more complete record, including the identities of some of the innovators. The Birth of Mathematics, Updated Edition profiles 10 individuals spanning four cultures and 20 centuries as representatives of the numerous scholars who contributed to the field of mathematics. The stories of their achievements provide a glimpse into the lives and the minds of some of the pioneers who discovered mathematics. Each unit contains information on the person's research, discoveries, and contributions to the field and concludes with a list of print and Internet references specific to that individual.
Download or read book The Foundations of Mathematics Updated Edition written by Michael Bradley and published by Infobase Holdings, Inc. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the previous edition: “…ample information for reports.”—School Library Journal During the 16th and 17th centuries, mathematicians developed a wealth of new ideas but had not carefully employed accurate definitions, proofs, or procedures to document and implement them. However, in the early 19th century, mathematicians began to recognize the need to precisely define their terms, to logically prove even obvious principles, and to use rigorous methods of manipulation. The Foundations of Mathematics, Updated Edition presents the lives and accomplishments of 10 mathematicians who contributed to one or more of the four major initiatives that characterized the rapid growth of mathematics during the 19th century: the introduction of rigor, the investigation of the structure of mathematical systems, the development of new branches of mathematics, and the spread of mathematical activity throughout Europe. This updated edition communicates the importance and impact of the work of the pioneers who redefined this area of study. Each unit contains information on the person's research, discoveries, and contributions to the field and concludes with a list of print and Internet references specific to that individual.
