Download or read book Up the Moselle written by George Carless Swayne and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-11 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical book recounts the history of Trêves. Trêves is without doubt one of the most ancient towns in Europe: so ancient in fact that its foundation has been attributed to one Trebeta, the step-son of Semiramis, the Assyrian empress, whose story resembles that of Bellerophon in the Greek legend. But nothing is historically known of Trêves till the Roman times. Then the chief city of the Treviri became under the empire the metropolis of the north. It is said to have contained more than 100,000 inhabitants, and this is by no means incredible when the extent of the old Roman wall is taken into consideration.

Book The Moselle Cycle Route

Download or read book The Moselle Cycle Route written by Mike Wells and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook provides 14 stages of route description to cycling along the Moselle river, a route that offers stunning scenery, plentiful accommodation and places to eat and drink, and straightforward cycling throughout. A well-waymarked, generally downhill 512km route, it is mostly off-road and on well-surfaced cycle tracks (mainly asphalt) with virtually no gradients, and the majority is along the riverbank or on canal towpaths. From its source in the Vosges Mountains of eastern France, the Moselle flows through the French region of Lorraine and crosses into Luxembourg then into the German Rheinland region before it reaches its confluence with the Rhine at the west German city of Koblenz. Suitable for both veteran long-distance cyclists and for newcomers to cycle touring who wish to start with an easy-to-follow journey, the route can be completed in a week by fit cyclists, cycling two stages per day. Two weeks allow for alternative stages and optional excursions through the Saar and Rhine gorges and to visit the Boucles de Moselle and the city of Luxembourg, and give enough time for sightseeing and a leisurely riding pace.

Book excerpt: Packed with surprising and fascinating information, London's Lost Rivers uncovers a very different side to London - showing how waterways shaped our principal city and exploring the legacy they leave today. With individual maps to show the course of each river and over 100 colour photographs, it's essential browsing for any Londoner and the perfect gift for anyone who loves exploring the past... 'An amazing book' -- BBC Radio London 'Talling's highly visual, fact-packed, waffle-free account is the freshest take we've yet seen. A must-buy for anyone who enjoys the "hidden" side of London -- Londonist 'A fascinating and stylish guide to exploring the capital's forgotten brooks, waterways, canals and ditches ... it's a terrific book' - Walk 'Pocket-sized, beautifully designed, illustrated and informative - in short a joy to read, handle and use' -- ***** Reader review 'Delightful, informative and beautifully produced' -- ***** Reader review 'A small gem. A really great book. I can't put it down' -- ***** Reader review 'Fascinating from start to finish' -- ***** Reader review ************************************************************************************************ From the sources of the Fleet in Hampstead's ponds to the mouth of the Effra in Vauxhall, via the meander of the Westbourne through 'Knight's Bridge' and the Tyburn's curve along Marylebone Lane, London's Lost Rivers unearths the hidden waterways that flow beneath the streets of the capital. Paul Talling investigates how these rivers shaped the city - forming borough boundaries and transport networks, fashionable spas and stagnant slums - and how they all eventually gave way to railways, roads and sewers. Armed with his camera, he traces their routes and reveals their often overlooked remains: riverside pubs on the Old Kent Road, healing wells in King's Cross, 'stink pipes' in Hammersmith and gurgling gutters on streets across the city. Packed with maps and over 100 colour photographs, London's Lost Rivers uncovers the watery history of the city's most famous sights, bringing to life the very different London that lies beneath our feet.

Book The Courier

Download or read book The Courier written by Dahn Batchelor and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading about history can be boring at times but not when it is incorporated into a novel such as The Courier. The plot of this story is about the attempt to bring to the Americans information about the Nazis secret endeavors to produce an atomic bomb and the attempts of the Nazis to prevent the secret from falling into the hands of the Americans. This story is encompassed by actual historical events in which those events told in this story occurred prior to, during, and after the Second World War in Europe. The locales in this story are in Belgium, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States; however, the stories in those locales arent necessarily told in that order. The main fictional characters in this book are an American navy captain, a Dutch family, and a German gestapo agent. Aside from several minor fictional characters, the other people that are described in this book were real people. The events described with reference to the real people depicted in this book actually occurred. Think of this book as a promenade into the events of the last century, when one of the greatest wars in history was initiated by Adolf Hitler.

Rothenberg " A] highly scholarly and wonderfully absorbing study." --John Bayley, The London Review of Books "What Russell F. Weigley writes, the rest of us read. The Age of Battles is a persuasive reminder that even in the age of 'rational' warfare, one can honestly wonder why war seemed an unavoidable policy choice." --Allan R. Millett, The Journal of American History
