Since its publication, many new forces have impacted the landscape of early childhood education, presenting both great opportunities and great risks for today’s emotionally fragile young children. Once again making complex psychological concepts accessible to classroom teachers, this thorough revision: Incorporates important understandings gained since the tragic events of 9/11. Addresses many of the challenging issues that confront educators in the current high-pressure climate focused on academic performance. Includes recent scientific research that supports the concepts underlying high-quality intervention and prevention in early childhood practice—concepts that were the basis for the first edition of this book. Provides an essential framework to help teachers understand the emotional lives of the young children they serve. Praise for First Edition! "As a teacher educator, I am convinced by this powerful and moving book that every teacher needs to be more therapeutic with all children." Nancy J. Zollers, Boston College for the Disability Studies Quarterly

Download or read book Recognising Faces written by Vicki Bruce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us is able to recognise the faces of many hundreds if not thousands of people known to us. We recognise faces despite seeing them in different views and with changing expressions. From these varying patterns we somehow extract the invariant characteristics of an individual’s face, and usually remember why a face seems familiar, recalling where we know the person from and what they are called. In this book, originally published in 1988, the author describes the progress which has been made by psychologists towards understanding these perceptual and cognitive processes, and points to theoretical directions which may prove important in the future. Though emphasising theory, the book also addresses practical problems of eyewitness testimony, and discusses the relationship between recognising faces, and other aspects of face processing such as perceiving expressions and lipreading. The book was aimed primarily at a research audience, but would also interest advanced undergraduate students in vision and cognition.

Twenty-two-year-old Detective Emil Brod finally gets his chance to serve his country, investigating murder for the People's Militia. The first victim is a state songwriter, but the facts point to a political motive. Emil would like to investigate further, but his colleagues in Homicide are suspicious or silent: He is on his own in this new, dangerous world. A hugely popular play in antiquity and with a rich reception history to the present day, this is an essential play for students of classics, drama and the canon of western literature. Leah Himmelhoch provides a helpful guide for students and instructors wishing to study and teach the play, building on her over twenty-five years of experience teaching college and university students. A quick introduction sets out Agamemnon's historical, literary, and performative context, its use of imagery and themes (especially gender conflict and the perversion of sacrificial ritual), and its subsequent literary and cultural impact while extensive commentary notes guide students through every line of the Greek text. Difficult passages are carefully explained while the power and beauty of the language is brought out at every opportunity. Himmelhoch's commentary also offers a companion website with a running vocabulary for the entire Agamemnon as further help for students.
