Book excerpt: Unpolished Angel By: Sarah King Growing up, Sarah King lived in a cramped apartment with her parents, five brothers, and four sisters. Her parents were alcoholics and moved the family to North Carolina when she was four. She was subjected to physical and sexual abuse from neighbors and relatives starting at a very young age. Sarah's parents left her and some of her siblings with relatives for a while but eventually came back and brought the children to live with them in Chicago. Once again Sarah found herself poverty stricken and she began eating out of dumpsters. While still a child, she turned to prostitution. As she grew up, she became involved in more illegal activities and eventually turned to drugs. And later, while being a mother and grandmother, she still battled her addiction problem. Unpolished Angel is the harrowing tale of Sarah's struggles in life. She knows she would have never pulled through any part of her life if God wasn't with her. Jesus held her hand, and He carried her through so much. She gives all her praise to Him.

Download or read book The Oxford Shakespeare The Tragedy of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark and violent, Macbeth is also the most theatrically spectacular of Shakespeare's tragedies. Indeed, for 250 years - until early this century - it was performed with grand operatic additions set to baroque music. In his introduction Nicholas Brooke relates the play's changing fortunes to changes within society and the theatre and investigates the sources of its enduring appeal. He examines its many layers of illusion and interprets its linguistic turns and echoes, arguing that the earliest surviving text is an adaptation, perhaps carried out by Shakespeare himself in collaboration with Thomas Middleton. This fully annotated edition reconsiders textual and staging problems, appraises past and present critical views, and represents a major contribution to our understanding of Macbeth. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: Once in every girl's life there comes a time when the woman separates from the child and a third person is born. This is a story of first love and first betrayals but it is also a multifaceted mystery that unfolds one layer at a time. Colleen, a high-spirited but self-doubting schemer and Abby, precocious and sarcastic, are attempting to pass the summer at the Geneva Resort until the beautiful Sara arrives and disrupts Collen's plans for romance. The pair instinctively dislike the eye-catching Sara who has come to hide from a past that even she can not remember. Only the self-assured Mavis seems to warm to the girl. But they will all soon learn the fragility of life when one of the young girls at the resort turns up missing. This is a tale rich in startling parallels between several seemingly diverse girls, whose lives are all connected through memories of maternal loss, complicated by duplicity and guilt. At the same time they are precariously trying to mature into womanhood and endeavoring not to get broken in the process. As time passes they begin to investigate the disappearance of Michelle in an effort to clear one of their friends. They inadvertently unravel the mystery, only to discover a truth too horrible to imagine. While struggling to come to grips with their own anonymity, they must find the courage to disconnect from their mothers' influences and prove to themselves that they are not 'glass angels' after all. This is not a coming of age book but rather a sweet road to maturity filled with poignant yet often humorous insights into a young woman's mind.

Book excerpt: ‘One minute Jasmin was standing in her bath, drying her hair with the hair dryer, the next she was in a noisy, crowded room wearing her dressing gown and carrying a suitcase with a faulty lock. It didn't seem particularly strange, because her life was like that. She could be walking down the street, or across the school playground or running in the gym and the next thing she knew she'd be sitting up in a bed at home, a sick room or, in extreme cases, a hospital.Jasmin was accident prone - or ``unfortunate’’, as her parents described her. They marvelled at times that she’d actually reached the ripe old age of 14.’Little Angels is a light-hearted look at teenagers “on the other side”. Jasmin becomes member of Angel Troop and is one of the clumsiest Guardian Angels to grace the troop, but she manages, with a bit of luck, to eventually to do her job and rescue her soul mate from some sticky situations.
