Book New Opportunities for U S Universities in Development Assistance

Download or read book New Opportunities for U S Universities in Development Assistance written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on university/U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) interactions in activities directly related to agriculture, natural resources, and the environment in developing nations. It is noted that U.S. university participation in AID development assistance ventures has declined since passage of the Title XII program of the Foreign Assistance Act in 1975. New opportunities for U.S. university involvement in foreign development assistance, however, are arising from new initiatives in AID, and in other development assistance organizations. In addition, AID is focusing on its affiliations with development assistance organizations, including U.S. universities, to encourage multi-institutional collaborative relationships. The report covers the following topics: how AID has utilized university resources; recent trends in AID/university collaboration; trends in AID policies, programs, and funding; perceived conflicts in the AID/university relationship, both historical and recurrent; and opportunities for U.S. university participation in development assistance. Also discussed are new directions for university participation in development assistance. Appendices include a list of programs supporting research and technology generation, AID Regional Bureau strategies, and AID actions in developing countries. Contains 120 references. (GLR)

Book Foreign Aid and Foreign Policy

Download or read book Foreign Aid and Foreign Policy written by Louis A. Picard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely work presents cutting-edge analysis of the problems of U.S. foreign assistance programs - why these problems have not been solved in the past, and how they might be solved in the future. The book focuses primarily on U.S. foreign assistance and foreign policy as they apply to nation building, governance, and democratization. The expert contributors examine issues currently in play, and also trace the history and evolution of many of these problems over the years. They address policy concerns as well as management and organizational factors as they affect programs and policies. "Foreign Aid and Foreign Policy" includes several chapter-length case studies (on Iraq, Pakistan, Ghana, Haiti, and various countries in Eastern Europe and Africa), but the bulk of the book presents broad coverage of general topics such as foreign aid and security, NGOs and foreign aid, capacity building, and building democracy abroad. Each chapter offers recommendations on how to improve the U.S. system of aid in the context of foreign policy.

Book University Development Co operation Models of Good Practice

Download or read book University Development Co operation Models of Good Practice written by P. Beneitone and published by Universidad de Deusto. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system of development co-operation implemented in recent years is now being exposed to great criticism. At the centre of this system are the policies of donor countries and international organisations that carry out co-operation actions. Criticism has been aimed at both co-operation actors per se, and the policies and instruments used by them in recent years. In this respect, it is interesting to analyse the role of the university as an agent of development co-operation. The aim of this book is to gather different ideas from the North on university development cooperation with the South in order to think about what we can consider examples of good practice. We try to offer a comprehensive view of university development co-operation practices in each of the ten countries analysed. We have tried to identify the most important aspects of these practices and to evaluate the extent to which they have met with the objectives established prior to their implementation. Likewise, we have tried to measure to what extent the tools and instruments used were appropriate to the aims. Each author, within their context and from their experience, has tried to answer these questions, and to provide clarity on the existing models, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as specific examples that can clarify the successful presence of activities of development co-operation in European universities.

Download or read book To Export Progress written by Daniel C. Levy and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An immensely valuable and detailed analysis of foreign, mainly American, assistance to Latin American higher education, To Export Progress provides an understanding of the 'what' and the 'why' of foreign aid to a key sector. This book will be a classic in its field." -- Philip G. Altbach, Monan Professor of Higher Education, Boston College "Professor Daniel C. Levy, a leading authority in the field of higher education and the nonprofit sector in Latin America, once again has opened an otherwise neglected field through his carefully researched and reported study of philanthropic support for university reform in the region. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, documentary evidence, interviews, and first hand experience with the actors and agencies involved, To Export Progress illuminates the vision and ideals inspiring international agencies, as much as the realities they confronted in deciding on grants and loans policy, from the 1960s to the 1980s. The book is strongly recommended for scholars and students of international education, for Latin American experts, and for philanthropic managers and educational administrators in the developing world." -- Jorge Balan, Senior Program Officer for Higher Education, The Ford Foundation. In this study of the attempts to export the modern Western university, its ideas, and its form to the Third World, Daniel C. Levy examines the development assistance provided by the Ford Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Inter-American Development Bank and their relations with local partners in Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s. Levy considers the funders, how they selected partners, which countries and institutions were favored, and to what effect. Based on meticulous research and careful analysis, the book provides a detailed look at philanthropic assistance to the region during the era of modernization and development in Latin America.
