Book The Assassination of the Prime Minister

Download or read book The Assassination of the Prime Minister written by David C Hanrahan and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only once in history has a British Prime Minister been assassinated. At 5.00 p.m. on Monday, 11 May 1812, John Bellingham made his way to the Houses of Parliament carrying concealed weapons. At 5.15 p.m., as the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon. Spencer Perceval, was making his way across the lobby leading to the House of Commons, Bellingham shot him dead at point-blank range. Bellingham was immediately arrested and put on trial two days later: refusing to plead insanity, he was convicted and hanged before the week was out. Bellingham was neither a revolutionary nor a religious fanatic, but a successful young entrepreneur. What had driven him to commit such a heinous crime? In a story of suspense, revenge and personal tragedy, David C. Hanrahan tells the interwoven stories of Perceval and Bellingham, detailing not just the events of May 1812, but also the two men's histories, and what led one to take the other's life.

  • Author : Ambrose Bierce

  • Pages : 341 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dictionary, n: A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.” Bierce’s groundbreaking Devil’s Dictionary had a complex publication history. Started in the mid-1800s as an irregular column in Californian newspapers under various titles, he gradually refined the new-at-the-time idea of an irreverent set of glossary-like definitions. The final name, as we see it titled in this work, did not appear until an 1881 column published in the periodical The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp. There were no publications of the complete glossary in the 1800s. Not until 1906 did a portion of Bierce’s collection get published by Doubleday, under the name The Cynic’s Word Book—the publisher not wanting to use the word “Devil” in the title, to the great disappointment of the author. The 1906 word book only went from A to L, however, and the remainder was never released under the compromised title. In 1911 the Devil’s Dictionary as we know it was published in complete form as part of Bierce’s collected works (volume 7 of 12), including the remainder of the definitions from M to Z. It has been republished a number of times, including more recent efforts where older definitions from his columns that never made it into the original book were included. Due to the complex nature of copyright, some of those found definitions have unclear public domain status and were not included. This edition of the book includes, however, a set of definitions attributed to his one-and-only “Demon’s Dictionary” column, including Bierce’s classic definition of A: “the first letter in every properly constructed alphabet.” Bierce enjoyed “quoting” his pseudonyms in his work. Most of the poetry, dramatic scenes and stories in this book attributed to others were self-authored and do not exist outside of this work. This includes the prolific Father Gassalasca Jape, whom he thanks in the preface—“jape” of course having the definition: “a practical joke.” This book is a product of its time and must be approached as such. Many of the definitions hold up well today, but some might be considered less palatable by modern readers. Regardless, the book’s humorous style is a valuable snapshot of American culture from past centuries. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: A brilliant work from the most influential philosopher since Sartre. In this indispensable work, a brilliant thinker suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul.

Book With Walt Whitman in Camden

Download or read book With Walt Whitman in Camden written by Horace Traubel and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absorbing as biography, invaluable as reference, this latest volume in the distinguished series that began publication in 1906continues Traubel's minute, detailed, day-by-day account of America's greatest poet. William White, editor of the Walt Whitman Review and coeditor of The Collected Writings of Walt Whitman, assumed the editorial chores when Gertrude Traubel was unable to continue the project. Traubel wrote of the work that had absorbed so much of her life: "Vitality, contemporaneity--these Whitman characteristics--bring him to you not just an old man reliving a memorable career, but--like most seers--looking at events before him with flashes of prophetic insight." Volume 6presents the period from September 15, 1889, to July 6, 1890, with virtual transcripts of the conversations of Whitman with Traubel. Whitman's thoughts and opinions, reminiscences, his goings and comings, letters he received and wrote, and hundreds of other matters as well as important details of his life in his home on Mickle Street in Camden. This series is indispensable for an understanding of and insight into the life and opinions of Walt Whitman. Horace Traubel fulfilled Whitman's charge "to speak for me when I am dead," in a manner without precedent.

Download or read book The Mask Of Sanity written by Dr. Hervey M. Cleckley and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-27 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1941 under the title Mask of Sanity: An Attempt to Clarify Some Issues About the So-Called Psychopathic Personality, this influential book became a landmark in psychiatric case studies and was repeatedly revised, expanded and reprinted in subsequent editions—here we present the 3rd edition published in 1955. The Mask of Sanity is distinguished by its central thesis that the psychopath exhibits normal function according to standard psychiatric criteria, yet privately engages in destructive behavior. The book was intended to assist with detection and diagnosis of the elusive psychopath for purposes of palliation and offered no cure for the condition itself. The idea of a master deceiver secretly possessed of no moral or ethical restraints, yet behaving in public with excellent function, electrified American society and led to heightened interest in both psychological introspection and the detection of hidden psychopaths in society at large, leading to a refinement of the word itself into what was perceived to be a less stigmatizing term, “sociopath”.
