Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Book Methods and Outlines in United States History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Methods and Outlines in United States History Classic Reprint written by J. A. Joseph and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Outlines in United States History Now why should we study history at all? First, it possesses the greatest guidance value among the several branches. There is much truth in the old saying, History repeats itself, and that ages differ more in kind than in degree. Where one age develops a fact of civilization in a certain way, or works out an advanced position for man, it will do it much the same way another time. There are certain inevitable truths controlling the ages, and when an age repeats itself, the corre sponding truth will be found leading its move ments. The things that killed Greece would kill America; the force that united the world under Rome, would unite the world again. The ele ments that destroyed Rome, would destroy any empire in any age. A late profound scholar and historian has said The present is the fruit Of the past, and the germ of the future. NO work can stand unless it grows out Of the real wants Of the age and strikes firm root in the soil Of history. No one who tramples on the rights Of a past gen cration can claim the regard of its posterity History will disregard him who disregards her. Set at naught the lessons Of history, and no man shall wield any lasting influence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is an elementary account of government in the United States. It gives a brief state ment of the main facts of our constitutional history but it does not profess to be a constitutional history in the full meaning of the term. For the college student it attempts simply to point the way to extended study by a brief but connected review of the main facts, showing what is of chief importance for further study, and embracing those political documents which every student of our history must thoroughly understand. Book The United States

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States: An Outline of Political History, 1492-1871 To an Englishman, particularly if he is visiting America, an outline Of the political history of the United States may not be unwelcome. An American, being familiar with the main facts and the general relations Of parties, would look for details. It is, therefore, for English rather than American readers that this sketch is intended. If it comes into the hands Of an American, his liberality will make allowance for the position of an Englishman who regards the American Commonwealth as the great achieve ment of his race, and looks forward to the voluntary reunion Of the American branches of the race within its pale, yet desires to do justice to the mother country, and to render to her the meed of gratitude which will always be her due. Should this volume find acceptance it may be followed by a companion volume on the same scale, and treating, necessarily with the same succinctness, the recent history of parties, and the questions of the present day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Men Who Made the Nation: An Outline of United States History From 1760 to 1865 That the unification of the American people is now sufficiently accomplished to warrant the general reader in following up the chief events which have overcome inherent individualism and have by necessity compelled cooperation. That a recital of the events in the nation's career without the persons connected therewith is to the un trained reader an empty stage. However magnificently set, it is lifeless without the players. The making of the nation is the story of the men who made it. That at any given period of affairs one man will be found who is master of the situation, and events natu rally group themselves about him. That the preeminence of one man at any period does not detract from the services of the minor characters, some of whom may become leaders subsequently. Book American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book American History Classic Reprint written by Lewis W. Newton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History Not a great deal depends upon the form of notation used in an outline, provided the form adopted is consistently followed, and provided further that it may be easily comprehended and followed by the pupil Like the use of capital letters, punctuation, inden-tion-of paragraphs, and so forth, the use of indention and notation in an outline is for purposes of mental economy. When, because of proper indention, a simple and logical notation, and a clear, definite, and suggestive wording in an historical outline, the student is enabled in the shortest possible time to form a full and correct mental connection between any given subject and the larger subject or subjects of which it is a part, the author of an outline has gone as far as possible in assisting the student's thought process. The form of notation which it has seemed best to adopt for this outline is the following: Capital let ters, capital letters in parentheses, Roman numerals, Roman numerals in parentheses, Arabic numerals, Arabic numerals in parentheses, small Roman numerals, small Roman numerals in parentheses, small letters, and small letters in parentheses. Thus: A, (a), I, (i), I, (i), i, (i) a, (a). The letters are used only where there are so few coordinate parts as not to be confusing. The author of this outline has succeeded best with this method. Another problem in outlining a course in history for class work is that of properly combining period. Or chronological analysis with subject or movement analysis. By an historical movement I mean a series of historical facts or events relating to the same subject and linked together by cause and effect: such, for in stance, as, Territorial Expansion of the United States from 1789 to the Present. By a period of history is meant a certain block of time within which a particular movement or tendency seems to predominate. The almost exclusive use of movement analysis would be preferable were the aim of the course in American history solely to reorganize and interpret facts and events already familiar to the student. But since no such familiarity exists among our students at the beginning of the course, we are {compelled to analyze the general progress of history much in the way that it actually occurred. In this outline, there fore, I have attempted, while following the development of history by periods, to adhere as much as possible to movement analysis. For this reason, I have not always followed the topical order of treatment in any textbook. Indeed, this is unnecessary either in an outline or in the recitation.
