Book Understanding Dunblane and other Massacres

Download or read book Understanding Dunblane and other Massacres written by Peter Aylward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book predominantly explores the psychic histories of patients who display their transgenerational conflicts/trauma through forensic acts. It establishes the need to consider the details of patient history in understanding the patient within both the therapeutic encounter and the treatment team milieu. There are many themes of contemporary interest including gang murders, sibling jealousy, fatal eating disorder, personality disorder, and the effects of exclusion and marginalization within group and community dynamics and the global prevalence of mass murder. The author describes the collapse into dyadic thinking and enactment that prevails when the third perspective, classically represented by the father within the Oedipal dynamic, is excluded or absent. Providing detailed case studies he shows how seemingly meaningless explosions of violence or perversion are attempts to master early experiences of trauma and/or exclusion, often passed down unconsciously through the generations. Using the theories of Matte Blanco and notions of the 'critical date' the chapters give unique insight into the timing and triggers of crimes, however apparently random.

Book excerpt: Six papers from a March 1995 conference in Warwick, England, and seven additional commissioned essays span from the 11th century to the early 1990s and from western Europe to China. The historian authors explore such issues as what a massacre is, when and why it happens, cultural and political frameworks, how human societies respond, social and economic repercussions, and whether they are catalysts for change. They suggest that the massacre is often central to the course of human development and societal change. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Massacre in Cumbria The Day Gunman Derrick Bird Brought Terror to the Lake District

Download or read book Massacre in Cumbria The Day Gunman Derrick Bird Brought Terror to the Lake District written by Clare Leigh and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 2, 2010 Derrick Bird, a 52 year-old Cumbrian cab driver, went on a killing spree, shooting dead 12 people and injuring 11 more. His motivation is still unclear; an argument with colleagues, a family feud, and a previous assault are all said to have possibly tipped the divorced grandfather and father over the edge.Beginning in the early hours of Wednesday morning with the murder of his twin brother David and the family solicitor, Kevin Commons, Derrick then drove to Whitehaven, opening fire at 10:35am andkilling two of his colleagues. He then went ona rampage through the villages of Egremont, Gosforth, and Seascale, shooting indiscriminately at passers-by. He ended his frenzied attacks in Boot, abandoning his car and setting off alone and on foot into the woodlands where he took his own life at 1:25pm. As the ambulance service took over 50 emergency calls in three-and-a-half hours, police told people to lock their doors and stay inside. Shops, pubs, banks, and supermarkets pulled strangers off the street to give them shelter. A "quiet lad who had no luck with lasses, no one will really know what drove Derrick Bird to kill, but the consequences of his actions will remain for years to come as families, friends, and an entire nation come to turns with what he did on an ordinary June morning."

Book Controlling Small Arms

Download or read book Controlling Small Arms written by Peter Batchelor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume takes stock of the state of research and policy on the issue of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), ten years after the UN first agreed to deal with the problem. The end of the Cold War originated a series of phenomena that would subsequently come to dominate the political agenda. Perhaps most symptomatic of the ensuing environment is the marked escalation in the scale and dynamics of armed violence, driven by the proliferation of SALW. Events in Rwanda, Somalia and Bosnia seared into global consciousness the devastating effects of this phenomenon, and of the necessity to engage actively in its limitation and prevention. This edited volume explores and outlines the research and policy on the SALW issue at this critical juncture. In addition to providing a detailed telling of the genesis and evolution of SALW research and advocacy, the volume features a series of essays from leading scholars in the field on both advances in research and action on SALW. It reflects on what has been achieved in terms of cumulative advances in data, methodology and analysis, and looks at the ways in which these developments have helped to inform policy making at national, regional and international levels. Alongside situating and integrating past and present advances in advocacy and international action, Controlling Small Arms also outlines future directions for research and action. This book will be of much interest to students of small arms, peace and conflict studies, peacebuilding, security studies and IR.

Book Ethical Reporting of Sensitive Topics

Download or read book Ethical Reporting of Sensitive Topics written by Ann Luce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethical Reporting of Sensitive Topics explores the underlying complexities that journalists may face when covering difficult news stories. Reporting on issues such as suicide, sexual abuse, or migration is a skill that is often glossed over in a journalist’s education. By combining theory and practice, this collection will correct this oversight and give journalists the expertise and understanding to report on these subjects responsibly and ethically. Contributors to this volume are an international group of journalists-turned- academics, who share their first-hand experiences and unique professional insight into best ethical journalistic practice for reporting on sensitive topics. Drawing from a range of case studies, contributors discuss the most appropriate approach to, for example, describing a shooter who has killed a group of schoolchildren or interviewing someone who has lost everything in a natural disaster. Readers are invited to consider factors which have the potential to influence the reporting of these sorts of topics, including bias, sensationalism, conflict of interest, grief, vulnerability, and ignorance of one’s own privilege. Ethical Reporting of Sensitive Topics aims to support all journalists, from students of journalism and individuals encountering a newsroom for the first time, to those veteran journalists or specialist journalists who seek to better their reporting skills.

Download or read book Preaching and Politics written by Tim J. R. Trumper and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-04-08 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's culture war raises questions about pulpit ministry; the answers to which are often assumed but rarely thought through. Drawing on his transatlantic studies of both politics and theology, scholar-pastor Tim Trumper weighs the various homiletical approaches to political engagement. In doing so, he eschews the predominant apolitical and party-political tendencies of the day, preferring a mediating biblical-political approach that upholds the sanctity of the preacher's calling and the expository method of preaching. The result is a tract for our times, one that calls for the sermonic pre-eminence of the Kingdom of Heaven and the prophetic application of its lessons to the church and to the world.
