Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most famous Sicilian short-stories by Giovanni Verga translated into English. "The charm of the six short stories bound up under the inclusive title of Under the Shadow of Etna lies in their reflection of Sicilian scenery, life, and character, with which all of them deal. They are translations from the Italian of Giovanni Verga by the practiced hand of Nathan Haskell Dole, and smoking Etna overhangs them all as does Fujiyama the romances of Japan. One of the six, "Cavalleria Rusticana," has already been made widely familiar by the musical setting of it in Mascagni's opera. All are tales of human passion, love, sin, and sorrow, grimly real sometimes, slight in touch, dramatic, artistic, now and then sunshiny, and full of realism." -The Literary World: A Monthly Review of Current Literature, Vol. 2 "The Sicilian tales are selected as but representing the varied work of Verga, a "realist" in literature. The stories are strong and brilliant, and Mr. Dole's translation pellucid as it should be." -The Book Buyer, Volume 13

This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 4978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudyard Kipling's 'Rudyard Kipling Premium Collection' is a literary treasure trove encompassing the greatest works of one of the most esteemed writers of the British Empire. This comprehensive volume includes some of Kipling's most iconic pieces, such as 'The Jungle Book,' 'Kim,' and 'Just So Stories,' all accompanied by beautiful illustrations that enhance the reading experience. Kipling's writing style is marked by vivid storytelling, rich imagery, and a deep understanding of the human condition, making his works resonate with readers of all ages. Set against the backdrop of late 19th and early 20th century British colonialism, Kipling's narratives offer a complex portrayal of the complexities of power, identity, and belonging. Through his diverse characters and settings, Kipling weaves tales that are both entertaining and thought-provoking, offering readers a glimpse into the intricate fabric of the Empire during that era. Rudyard Kipling, a Nobel Prize laureate, drew inspiration for his works from his own experiences growing up in British India and later journeying around the world. His unique perspective as an outsider looking in on the imperial project informed his nuanced storytelling, which often challenged imperialist assumptions and celebrated the diversity of cultures and peoples he encountered. Kipling's enduring legacy as a literary giant continues to captivate and inspire readers across the globe, cementing his reputation as a master storyteller with a keen eye for detail and a deep reverence for the complexities of human nature. I highly recommend 'Rudyard Kipling Premium Collection' to any reader interested in exploring the intricacies of British colonial literature and the enduring legacy of one of its most celebrated authors. Book Madness Unchained

Download or read book Madness Unchained written by Lee Fratantuono and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madness Unchained is a comprehensive introduction to and study of Virgil's Aeneid. The book moves through Virgil's epic scene by scene and offers a detailed explication of not only all the major (and many minor) difficulties of interpretation, but also provides a cohesive argument that explores Virgil's point in writing this epic of Roman mythology and Augustan propaganda: the role of fury or madness in Rome's national identity. There have been other books that have attempted to present a complete guide to the Aeneid, but this is the first to address every episode in the poem, omitting nothing, and aiming itself at an audience that ranges from the Advanced Placement Virgil student in secondary school to the professional Virgilian and everyone in-between, both Latinists and the Latin-less. Individual chapters correspond to the books of the poem; unlike some volumes that prejudice the reader's interpretation of the work by rearranging the order of episodes in order to influence their impact on the audience, this book moves in the order Virgil intended, and also gives rather fuller exposition to the second half of the poem, Virgil's self-proclaimed 'greater work' (maius opus).

Book Top Gear Drives of a Lifetime

Download or read book Top Gear Drives of a Lifetime written by Dan Read and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, Top Gear dispatches correspondents to cover many serious stories around the world. Wherever they go, they ask tough questions and leave no stone unturned in search of the cold, hard truth. Questions such as: Is it possible to drive a Ferrari up a Scottish ski slope? Exactly how far can you drive a bulldozer across the Antarctic before it falls down a big crack? And what happens when you drive a small 4X4 up a volcano, during an earthquake, with a high chance of eruption? The answers to all of the above – and more – can be found in Top Gear Top Drives, a new book featuring Top Gear’s best adventures, neatly arranged in precise geographic order: top, middle and bottom. These are not Sunday drives to country pubs. You will not find any mentions of freshly cut grass and picnics under oak trees. In fact, you are more likely to encounter roadside landmines and a pack of Chilean llamas with a relaxed approach to personal hygiene. Of course you will also find supercars on winding mountain passes, but this book goes much further, bringing you the most unusual combinations of car and tarmac – or lack of it – from across our planet. All of which are accompanied by a surprisingly useful collection of travel tips, featuring such useful advice as when to go, what the weather’s like and where to find a reasonably priced beer. Like any classic travel guide, you really shouldn’t leave home without it. Unless you write down the really important bits, in which case you’ll probably be OK.

Book Pietro Bembo on Etna

Download or read book Pietro Bembo on Etna written by Gareth D. Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is centered on the Venetian humanist Pietro Bembo (1470-1547), on his two-year stay in Sicily in 1492-4 to study the ancient Greek language under one of its most distinguished contemporary teachers, the Byzantine émigré Constantine Lascaris, and above all on his ascent of Mount Etna in 1493. The more particular focus of this study is on the imaginative capacities that crucially shape Bembo's elegantly crafted account, in Latin, of his Etna adventure in his so-called De Aetna, published at the Aldine press in Venice in 1496. This work is cast in the form of a dialogue that takes place between the young Bembo and his father Bernardo (himself a prominent Venetian statesman with strong humanist involvements) after Pietro's return to Venice from Sicily in 1494. But De Aetna offers much more than a one-dimensional account of the facts, sights and findings of Pietro's climb. Far more important in the present study is his eye for creative elaboration, or for transforming his literal experience on the mountain into a meditation on his coming-of-age at a remove from the conventional career-path expected of one of his station within the Venetian patriciate. Three mutually informing features that are critical to the artistic originality of De Aetna receive detailed treatment in this study: (i) the stimulus that Pietro drew from the complex history of Mount Etna as treated in the Greco-Roman literary tradition from Pindar onwards; (ii) the striking novelty of De Aetna's status as the first Latin text produced at the nascent Aldine press in the prototype of what modern typography knows as Bembo typeface; and (iii) Pietro's ingenious deployment of Etna as a powerful, multivalent symbol that simultaneously reflects the diverse characterizations of, and the generational differences between, father and son in the course of their dialogical exchanges within De Aetna.
