Book Under Sail Classic Reprint

Download or read book Under Sail Classic Reprint written by Felix Riesenberg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under Sail A America is again facing forward to the sea. The ancient thrill of the wide salt spaces, of the broad horizon beyond which adventure beckons us, appeals once more to the youth of America. We are living in times when the great importance of the sea as a career comes home to us at every turn. The sea is the great bulwark of our liberty, and by the sea we must persevere or perish in the world struggle of Anglo-Saxon democracy against the powers of autocratic might. When America returns to her own, she builds upon foundations of tradition that have their footings on the solid bed rock of the republic. One glorious era of our sea history was followed by another, and as times progressed the breed of seamen ever rose capable and triumphant to the necessities that called them forth. Book From Sail to Steam

Download or read book From Sail to Steam written by A. T. Mahan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Sail to Steam: Recollections of Naval Life If such a man has the genius of his business, as had Frois sart and Boswell, he excels in proportion to his unconscious ness of the fact; his colors run truer. For lesser gabblers, who have not genius, the best way to lose consciousness is just to let themselves go; if they endeavor to paint ar tistically the muddle will be worse. To such the proverb of the cobbler and his last is of perennial warning. AS a barber once sagely remarked to me, You can't trim a beard well, unless you're born to it. It is possible in some degree to imitate Froissart and Boswell in that marvellous diligence to accumulate material which was common to them both; but, when gathered, how impossible it is to work up that old junk into permanent engrossing interest let those answer who have grappled with ancient chronicles. Book Mast and Sail in Europe and Asia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mast and Sail in Europe and Asia Classic Reprint written by H. Warington Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mast and Sail in Europe and Asia The present chapters are the outcome of some years of varied sea travel. They attempt to record the peculiarities of the principal types of sailing-craft in Europe and Asia which I have observed, or of which I have had experience, and in many cases have handled for myself; and to consider, to some extent, the causes which have been at work in the development of boats and the results attained under the conditions with which they have had to contend. This book can only pretend to be a contribution to the literature of the subject, - indeed it would be wellnigh impossible for any one man personally to know the coastlines of the earth in sufficient detail, and to study or handle all the numerous types of sailing-boats, developed with endless variety and ingenuity, in every locality, with sufficient intimacy to write on the whole subject. I can only hope here to indicate to those whose tastes are similar to my own the infinite interest of a study which Mast and Sail can afford him. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book Single Handed Cruising Classic Reprint

Download or read book Single Handed Cruising Classic Reprint written by Francis B. Cooke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Single-Handed Cruising These articles originally appeared in the pages of the Yachting World, and I am indebted to the proprietors for permission to reprint them in this form. The matter has been rearranged and revised, and being based upon many years' practical experience of single-handed sailing, will, I hope, be acceptable to those who, either from choice or necessity, make a practice of cruising alone. Of the four thousand or more yachts whose names appear in Lloyd's Register, quite a considerable proportion are small craft used for the most part for week-end cruising, and single-handed sailing is a proposition that the owner of a week-ender cannot afford altogether to ignore. To be dependent upon the assistance of friends, who may leave one in the lurch at the eleventh hour, is a miserable business that can only be avoided by having a yacht which one is capable of handling alone. The ideal arrangement is to have a vessel of sufficient size to accommodate one or two guests and yet not too large to be sailed single-handed at a pinch. In this little book I have endeavoured to give a few hints on the equipment and handling of such a craft, which, it may be remarked, can, in the absence of paid hands, be maintained at comparatively small cost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Frigate Constitution: The Central Figure of the Navy Under Sail Goldsborough's Naval Chronicle, Roosevelt's History of the War of and several admi rable articles by Mr. J. R. Soley have been con sulted and used. It hardly seems necessary to acknowledge indebtedness for tales and minor details which have been common property for half a century. This volume was prepared during the summer of the Spanish War, when the writer watched with pride and solicitude the service of his former comrades who have worthily main tained the traditions of the Old Navy. With the hope of making clearer the relation of the sailor to the country and of stimulating the interest in rebuilding the ship, it is now given to the public.
