Book excerpt: "With over 58 different theories and approaches in the literature, leadership studies and research show an important gap by not having a well-defined integrative leadership theory. Through an in depth critical synthesis of seminal writings, an initial construct is developed in the form of a 'leadership process' which operates within a 'leadership metamodel' (i.e., a model of models). These preliminary findings constitute an initial grounded theory. The metamodel consist of: a person, in any context, delivering a leadership service, which draws upon a leadership process, to capture relevant leadership capabilities, which is manifested through a leadership archetype. The leadership process itself starts from a need, conditions (knowledge, decision and action) are then set to deliver a leadership role from which power (authority and influence) emerges, from which we learn (feedback) and, continue to do so, until that need is fulfilled (partially or completely). A core research experiment and two supplemental experiments further internally validate this construct through an iterative-hermeneutic content analysis of over 2300 years' worth of enduring influential occidental leadership concepts. Using sentences as the main unit of analysis, the following research questions are answered: 'Do leadership theories share a common set of characteristics?'; 'How could those characteristics be integrated?' and; 'What data language would support the integration?'. Perhaps the single most important contribution of all this work has been to build a solid foundation from which tools may be derived to aid current and future leaders in further developing critical skills such as: self-knowledge; ability to adapt behavior based on any context; selecting best approach when engaging with others in the complex leadership ecosystem. The leadership capability abstraction in this study provides a vocabulary, analytical discipline, and formal mapping structure that can be useful to address a wide variety of challenges that emerge on a regular basis for individuals involved in different leadership situations. Other contributions of this research include: articulating an integrated working theory; modelling the process of leadership focusing on the inputs and; developing a detailed data language and metamodel offering important potential for future education, serious gaming and new research opportunities."--Pages ii-iii.

For decades, actually for centuries, there has been a discussion about how effective leadership of people or employees can be realized. It has always been a major concern within market-based economic systems to learn how its products and services should be designed in order to generate consumer demand. That the discussion about business and employee management is more relevant than ever is linked to the fact that leadership situations are influenced by a variety of external factors. They include, in particular, political, cultural, social, demographic, economic, and technological developments. It is therefore required for business and employee management to be adapted to those external framework conditions on a permanent basis. In former times, the assumption in mainstream leadership research was that leadership success relied on specific personal characteristics. Later on, the prevailing view was that the decisive factors in employee management lied in specific leadership behavior or leadership styles. Today's research on leadership is dominated by situation-oriented approaches, providing for specific leadership concepts for specific organizational and employee-related structures. The present thesis is an attempt to bundle a variety of approaches to leadership with the aim of providing an overarching framework for concepts of a similar nature. Therefore, the leadership concept to be developed in what follows is to be characterized by the principles of holism and sustainability. The first step is to present the fundamentals of leadership and management in order to introduce key terms and concepts and provide an overview of the research on leadership. Chapter 3 deals with separately displaying the business and employee management approaches of various management pioneers, distinguishing between early and con-temporary pioneers. Each approach is presented in consideration of its key elements, its strengths and opportunities, as well as its weaknesses and limitations. The fourth chapter, finally, is devoted to developing a holistic and sustainable leader-ship concept.

Every theory and model proposed offers the promise of success, yet these theories never quite deliver what is intended. Theory itself is not at fault and neither is the execution of any particular premise. The issue is that most theories seek only one best solution--that one answer that will serve as a panacea for all the ills of every organization. This book makes no such claim and, in fact, argues against a one-size-fits-all theory. In an age of multidimensional diversity and growing workplace complexity, any singular choice made in regard to leadership will only be partially successful at best. This being the case, leaders should stop seeking the perfect leadership scenario or theory and begin to integrate the better parts of all relevant theories already available, thus creating a model that best fits the organization's particular set of circumstances. To do so however requires a different view of organizations themselves. We must discard the pyramid-shaped organizational chart and design organizations around relationships that place the follower first where the leadership emphasis is on enhancing each individual, thereby allowing each individual to enhance themselves and thus the organization. This approach is called affective leadership.
