Download or read book Saying Uncle written by Greg F. Gifune and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy DeMarco and his little sister Angela worshiped their Uncle Paulie. To them, he was a god, an enigmatic savior, the man who took the place of their absent father, who protected them and their mother, and who taught them about the true nature of life and family. But one horrible summer day something unspeakable happened to little Angela, and everyone’s world changed forever. Now, twenty years later, in the middle of a snowstorm, Andy has returned home to bury his uncle, a man with a shady past that ended with a caper gone wrong and a bullet in the back of his head. Only now can Andy begin to understand who his uncle truly was, and in doing so, finally begin to also understand who he is, and who he may still one day become. Praise for SAYING UNCLE: “This quietly powerful short novel should bring much deserved attention to Gifune, who succeeds in imbuing what could have been a clichéd and formulaic noir premise with haunting emotional depth. Fans of understated, sophisticated crime fiction are in for a treat.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review “Saying Uncle is steeped in some serious atmosphere. It’s the kind of book that you’ll want to rip through and yet also savor. You’ll reread passages for the pure poetry of sound as well as for the dazzling imagery. It’s that lush and affecting.” —Tom Piccirilli, author of Shadow Season “Saying Uncle is a tightly-crafted novel that is both an action story and an emotional one. Gifune’s words flow like mountain streams, and like those streams they bite hard when you step into their icy waters. It is a coming-of-age story filled with all the right components: strong characters, dark secrets, dangerous situations, and deep emotions. In short, it’s the kind of book other writers will wish they had written, and readers will be recommending to their friends.” —Dark Scribe Magazine “Devastating, in a good way, I feel like I experienced Gifune’s novel Saying Uncle firsthand. Wonderfully crafted on so many levels: description, characterization, atmosphere, thematically. A must read.” —Lisa von Biela, author of The Genesis Code “This—like most of Gifune’s vast body of work—is a novel first and a genre entry only secondarily. It’s a dark psychological study, engrossing and disturbing, profoundly reminiscent of the great “noir” classics of a generation ago…while remaining on the cutting edge of contemporary crime fiction. More people need to discover this excellent book. It’s hard to imagine a reader who wouldn’t be struck by its brilliance.” —Robert Dunbar, author of The Pines “Brilliant, grim, and absolutely devastating. An amazing work from quite possibly the greatest dark fiction author of our time.” —Sandy DeLuca, author of Descent

Download or read book Irish Novels 1890 1940 written by John Wilson Foster and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-02-21 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of Irish fiction are still scanty in contrast to studies of Irish poetry and drama. Attempting to fill a large critical vacancy, Irish Novels 1890-1940 is a comprehensive survey of popular and minor fiction (mainly novels) published between 1890 and 1922, a crucial period in Irish cultural and political history. Since the bulk of these sixty-odd writers have never been written about, certainly beyond brief mentions, the book opens up for further exploration a literary landscape, hitherto neglected, perhaps even unsuspected. This new landscape should alter the familiar perspectives on Irish literature of the period, first of all by adding genre fiction (science fiction, detective novels, ghost stories, New Woman fiction, and Great War novels) to the Irish syllabus, secondly by demonstrating the immense contribution of women writers to popular and mainstream Irish fiction. Among the popular and prolific female writers discussed are Mrs J.H. Riddell, B.M. Croker, M.E. Francis, Sarah Grand, Katharine Tynan, Ella MacMahon, Katherine Cecil Thurston, W.M. Letts, and Hannah Lynch. Indeed, a critical inference of the survey is that if there is a discernible tradition of the Irish novel, it is largely a female tradition. A substantial postscript surveys novels by Irish women between 1922 and1940 and relates them to the work of their female antecedents. This ground-breaking survey should also alter the familiar perspectives on the Ireland of 1890-1922. Many of the popular works were problem-novels and hence throw light on contemporary thinking and debate on the 'Irish Question'. After the Irish Literary Revival and creation of the Free State, much popular and mainstream fiction became a lost archive, neglected evidence, indeed, of a lost Ireland.

Book excerpt: Surprise niece. Estranged brothers. And now? The one who got away. Between dodging the avalanche of my crumbling business and learning how to change a two-year-old’s diaper, my life has taken unexpected turns. But I’m nothing if not a resourceful billionaire. Of course I hire a nanny—and only the best. But there’s one small problem. The best nanny tasked with helping my non-verbal niece come out of her shell is none other than Mercedes Hendricks. My ex. My first great love. The woman who told me to never contact her again six years ago. I’d send her away if she wasn’t so damn good at what she does. But as she wins over Willow’s heart, it has the unfortunate side effect of winning over me. I thought I was strong. I thought I was done with her. I thought I could ignore our steamy memories and her sweet smiles and all the little things that tell me our ending six years ago might have been a mistake… Wrong. I’m a pushover when it comes to this woman, and it doesn’t even matter that she’s engaged to somebody else. I plan to make her mine – the way she should have been six years ago. But as I work on setting up the next chapter of my life in Louisville, my infamy gets the best of me. There are dangerous people in Louisville who want me gone, which forces me to choose between the happiness I thought could be mine, and the safety my niece so desperately needs. Billionaires. Bad boys. Bleeding hearts. These outsiders are known as the Bad Boys of Wall Street and every book in the series features glittering Manhattan skyscrapers, swoon-worthy heroes, and a guaranteed HEA. The Price of Infamy is a second-chance, nanny, billionaire romance, book #4 in the Bad Boys of Wall Street series. This can be read as a stand-alone, but the series is best read in order, since the drama is chronological and cumulative throughout the books.
Download or read book The Psycho Records written by Laurence A. Rickels and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?The Psycho Records follows the influence of the primal shower scene within subsequent slasher and splatter films. American soldiers returning from World War II were called "psychos" if they exhibited mental illness. Robert Bloch and Alfred Hitchcock turned the term into a catch-all phrase for a range of psychotic and psychopathic symptoms or dispositions. They transferred a war disorder to the American heartland. Drawing on his experience with German film, Hitchcock packed inside his shower stall the essence of schauer, the German cognate meaning "horror." Later serial horror film production has post-traumatically flashed back to Hitchcock's shower scene. In the end, though, this book argues the effect is therapeutically finite. This extensive case study summons the genealogical readings of philosopher and psychoanalyst Laurence Rickels. The book opens not with another reading of Hitchcock's 1960 film but with an evaluation of various updates to vampirism over the years. It concludes with a close look at the rise of demonic and infernal tendencies in horror movies since the 1990s and the problem of the psycho as our most uncanny double in close quarters.

Download or read book The Wise Woman Builds Her House written by Verna Berry Howell and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a day and age when couples live in "meaningful relationships" without a legal or religious contract of marriage and when the divorce rate among those who choose to marry hovers between 50 and 60 percent, a book on marriage may seem to be an anachronism. However, Mrs. Howell draws on her experience of two successful marriages that spanned more than fifty-eight years. She offers her sage and insightful advice to anyone contemplating going into matrimony, to those considering getting a divorce, or even more tragic, to those who continue to live in a union that is not fulfilling. Marriage was instituted by God, not by mankind. Biblical principles teach us how to achieve productive, satisfying, and long lasting marriages. This book is an analogy of a physical house and a wedded relationship. Many couples put more time and thought into building their "dream house" than they do in building their marriage. The reader will examine the laying of the foundation through the framing of the structure. In architecture, each step is predicated on the successful implementation of that specific part of the build that came before it. It is imperative that careful attention is given to each part in order to attain the dream result. Widowed again, with a twinkle in her eye, Mrs. Howell states, "I'm looking for number three so I can start a new house."
